my professor has this stupid attendance roll-call thing where if you're a minute late to class, he just marks you absent. you can't fight it, either.

i take medication that keeps me up late at night and some mornings, it's a struggle to get into class exactly at 7:20.... but i'm there for the entire class (except for maybe 2 minutes or so after he's done calling roll).

well, all of those "absences" piled up and now i failed the class due to attendance. now, i've got to pay to take the class all over again even though i was in the class.

i spoke with the professor about my situation. he told me to talk to the dean of student admissions about it. the dean of admissions told me it wasn't up to him and that it was up to the professor. he'd ok whatever decision the professor made. so, i went back to the professor and he said he's happy with his policy and feels no need to change his decision.

i asked if i got a note from my psychiatrist explaining the side effects of my drug and why i'm taking the dosage that i am after years of trial and error. he said it isn't up to him to interpret side effects of medication.

i kinda feel like i'm going to throw up right now.

EDIT: more information for those who don't know....

1, my medicine isn't breaking me by 2-3 minutes.... my medicine (a stimulant) keeps me up at night, so i only get around 4 hours of sleep. i try taking stuff to help me sleep earlier and it doesn't work. in fact, because i metabolize medicine slowly, taking the sleep aids only make me later because they kick in late and keep me asleep.

2, i can't switch professors or take another time because the schedule is set. everyone in my trimester gets the same schedule with the same professors at the same times. you can't pick and choose dates, times, or professors. the school gives you a schedule and you follow it.

Talk to your doctor (whoever provided the prescription) and get adequate proof along with a contact number. Go to your dean and and present your case and have him get into contact with your doctor. I see no reason why something can't be worked out if you've got a professional backing you up.

you can be failed for non-attendance?

If you miss a certain number of classes, they can fail you. On a related note, OP, did you ever go to your professor or dean before hand, explaining why you may be late, etc?

I'm sorry that your meds have that effect on you.

That said:

If I know that the train I take to work is 15 minutes late EVERY morning, no matter what, I leave at least 15 minutes early to make up for it.

Your meds making you sleepy and making it difficult for you to get up in the morning is NOT an excuse for being late. Period. Your Prof is right; it's not his job to determine the side effects of your meds. That's YOUR JOB, buddy.

Judging by your avatar, I'd say you are a med student; you should know better, slacker.

I recommend you do a four year enlistment in the military. You'll learn some time management skills.

Wow, what a hard ass. Many of my college professors had the same policy... but after you brought them a doctors note or had a letter to give them, they became very leniant.

my meds keep me up... it's a stimulant and i metabolize medication slowly. it's either i take the medicine and maintain a level of attentiveness and focus during class and studying or not take the medicine, go to class on time, but not be able to understand anything that goes on and slack off.

Yeah, I'm one of them. I'm not better than anyone; I have my own problems. But I don't hide behind my problems and use them as excuses to have society cry sympathy for me.

If you have a special need, you make adjustments so that society functions around you , not the other way around.

Your professor is being a baby about this. Clearly, he is full of himself and it is his way or the highway. You have little you can do about it. Your only options are to retake the class or to make a big enough stink that someone will bend the rules for you. I don't think you'll have much success with bending the rules, and if you do, you'll make a lot of enemies.

That said, does your medicine make it IMPOSSIBLE to wake up 5 minutes earlier? I've never heard of something like that. More likely, it is your fault for being late and you are using your condition as an excuse.

It's state law in Florida that all public colleges has to take attendance, and when a student misses more than 1/6 of the grading period, they fail the course.

But that still doesn't explain why you can't get up in the morning. Why can't you get to class on time? It's not like you're showing up a 1/2-1hour late, you're showing up 2-3 minutes late.

hmm, that sounds obscenely unfair, maybe we're not getting the entire story?

i don't get how you can consistently make it in just 2 minutes late, but hardly ever manage to get in on time? Seems like a simple fix to me, versus the total change in lifestyle needed if you were missing the class entirely?

I'm not taking jabs at you, but the professor probably interpreted your excuse the same way, especially if you were trying to push that '2 minutes late' thing - kind of whiny, irresponsible, etc.

in any case, if the situation truly was that severe, and the professor's 'policy' as clearly stated in the syllabus or whatever as he seems to be convinced it was, then you had no right waiting until after the grading period to go in looking for leniency.

no sympathy here, but hey- who am i?

Thats the kinda ****** where I'd retaliate... throw a brick at his car... accidentally knock him down a flight of stairs.... something to inflict pain....

Sorry, but that excuse is pretty much bullsh!t. If you can make it to class by 7:21 or 7:22, then you can make it by 7:20. Your medication is not causing you to be 1-2 minutes late every day.
