I sympathize with you, as I feel the professor is being a strict jackass.

But, that being said, no matter how late I stayed up the night before, or if I got even any sleep at all, I am at work the next day on time. Welcome to real life. That's how it is, and you need to adjust, take no offense, as I understand it would be easy to, but you have to find another way, be it trying another medication, finding another doctor, taking it at a different time, etc. (No need for excuses, we already know this professor does not want to hear them).

Good luck though, I hope you can ammend this situation with a doctor's note.

i take medication that keeps me up late at night and some mornings, it's a struggle to get into class exactly at 7:20.... but i'm there for the entire class (except for maybe 2 minutes or so after he's done calling roll).

well, all of those "absences" piled up and now i failed the class due to attendance. now, i've got to pay to take the class all over again even though i was in the class.

i spoke with the professor about my situation. he told me to talk to the dean of student admissions about it. the dean of admissions told me it wasn't up to him and that it was up to the professor. he'd ok whatever decision the professor made. so, i went back to the professor and he said he's happy with his policy and feels no need to change his decision.

i asked if i got a note from my psychiatrist explaining the side effects of my drug and why i'm taking the dosage that i am after years of trial and error. he said it isn't up to him to interpret side effects of medication.

i kinda feel like i'm going to throw up right now.

Thats the kinda ****** where I'd retaliate... throw a brick at his car... accidentally knock him down a flight of stairs.... something to inflict pain....

Or, you know, maybe just set your alarm 3 minutes earlier! But hey, throwing a brick at his car is probably just as productive .

****** that ... his professor is just a power tripping SOB... there's no need to be an ass like that... in real life you're not going to get in any trouble for showing up for work 3 minutes late.

That arrogant bastard needs to be taught a lesson... I would go apeshit on him like you couldn't imagine... I would start digging for ways to get his ass canned...

Ooo.. out comes the eThug!

Sorry, but in the real world, there are tons of responsibilities that have tight-deadlines. Show up to your heart surgery 3 minutes late. Or a meeting iwth your clients. Or your kid's daycare a few minutes late, after his "uncle" picked him up.

To hell with all you spoiled little sh1ts that think the rules don't apply to you if they cost more than X amount of effort. Grow a pair and learn to deal.

Can you transfer out of his class? We had a chemistry professor that was like this, and half of his class transfered, and the dean made him change the practice.

You need to get a group together before you go to the dean. They won't listen to one person.

We'll see what you say when you are in the emergency room needing surgery to save your life, and every moment is critical and the doctors show up 3 mintues late.

See you are an idiot... and obviously don't know anything about the medical field. Doctors arrival time at the hospital is WAY before any operation they do is taking place... The doc is there on duty... the schedules of the docs overlap... so that docs can, and quite often do get to work a few minutes late. There's still someone there on duty...

There are very very very few jobs in the world where being 3 minutes late matters... Military being one of them... other than that... even the fvcking president can be 3 minutes late.

I don't think you'll have much success with bending the rules, and if you do, you'll make a lot of enemies.

That said, does your medicine make it IMPOSSIBLE to wake up 5 minutes earlier? I've never heard of something like that. More likely, it is your fault for being late and you are using your condition as an excuse.

it's not impossible to wake up 5 minutes earlier, but it is virtually impossible to sleep earlier, thereby getting more than 4 or 5 hrs of sleep. if you slept for 4 or 5 hours every day, you'd have a hard time waking up in the morning and functioning and awake enough to drive safely to school in traffic.

am i making excuses? absolutely. and it's a valid excuse to have. in order to succeed in my education, i need to have my medication. the downside to that is that it deprives me of sleep. you can be all indignant about how it's not impossible to wake up 5 minutes earlier, but you're not the one who can't fall asleep until 2 or 3 in the morning having to wake up at 6:30 just to get to class at 7:20 everyday.

I'm pretty sure we can agree that both are to blame in this situation, but in no way is being a couple minutes late enough to warrant a fail.

I'm consistanty late to work in the morning by five to ten minutes because I was awre of it and drug my feet in the morining to have breakfast and watch a little tv when I wake up. Whn I got called on it I altered my schedule, because there was no one (or thing) to blame other than myself for my lateness.

Suddenly leaving ten minutes earlier meant BEING ON TIME.

Of course I own my business now, so I can be late since I only have me to answer to. Of course I take work calls after hours, but that's not relevant.

Point is MichaelD is right. It's your problem and no one elses. Can the prof cut you a little more slack?? Sure he could, but he doesn't HAVE to. And for you to think he SHOULD because of your "excuse" is a little arrogant in my opinion. If you're going to med school it sounds like you already have the right attitude to be a doctor.

Now if he failed you for being late say, three times, and it was because you were at a funeral or something I'm sure he'd have a little more sympathy. However, it sounds like your "late problem" was of a chronic nature.

Your meds making you sleepy and making it difficult for you to get up in the morning is NOT an excuse for being late. Period. Your Prof is right; it's not his job to determine the side effects of your meds. That's YOUR JOB, buddy.

Judging by your avatar, I'd say you are a med student; you should know better, slacker.

God I hate anal people like you. DIAF.

No. You don't hate anal people like me.

The truth is, you can't stand to admit that you're a slacking POS that probably wears Birkenstocks every day and hasn't shaved in two weeks b/c "it's just too much trouble to put on socks and shave every day!" You probably feel that "schedules" are for "people that work for The Man" and you can't be bothered being held accountable for your own actions.

Grow up. The real world isn't going away and will be here when you pull your head out of your ass. The world operates on a CLOCK; that's why we have so many diff time zones. Life doesn't stop b/c you're on meds, or hungover or "not feeling particularly social today."

Nope that's not the truth. Hardass. I'm not a slacker either. But there are times when you draw the line and say, well maybe this person isn't a slacker 24/7 and they had one conflict where they had circumstances beyond their control for one class. Being able to interpret these things is part of the bottom line. There's a difference between someone who is out sick and someone who is faking it, and it's easy to tell the difference.

Let me guess, your dad was in the Army or something?

And I hate lazy, apathetic, and insiduous people like you that will search for any possible means of alleviating themselves of responsibility for their own actions, even if it takes claiming the death of a family member, begging their shrink for a doctor's note, or hell, lopping off an arm and claiming disability status.

fvcking scrubs.

Again, assuming. I take responsibility for my ******. I wouldn't be anywhere in life if I didn't. So you are perfect? Is that what you are saying?

I am confused. You go to every class, but just get there late a lot. I realize that you lose sleep due to your medication, but what exactly makes it so you can only get up 10 minutes later than you need to? I have never heard of such a drug that prevents a man from hearing his alarm at one moment, and allows him to hear it 10-20 minutes later...

You professor may be a hard ass, but he is teaching you a valuable lesson. Excuses are like assholes...

Oh you are so full of horse donkey... in the real world you wouldn't fire anyone who shows up within 3 minutes of the meeting time... you know that... so stop being such a poser.

Uh, consistently 3 minutes late to nearly every meeting, over the course of 5 months (semester equivalent)? And then if they had the nerve to come whining to me about being unfair after I'd already made the call to HR, when they hadn't bother with the respect of an excuse over the course of the past half year? I'd wouldn't even give them the courtesy of an audience, I'd have them escorted out. To bad professors are actually paid, thus expected to put up with a moderate level of bullsh!t.

funniest thing about this whole post to me was, the kid sure got his sh!t in gear once everything hit the fan- running back and forth between the professor, dean, and shrink?

Meds aren't stopping you now, are they?

EDIT: oh wait, gotta put the 'stupid attendance thing' up there too. yeah, we all hate that freaking attendance thing. you pay tuition, AND you're expected to go to class? what the hell is that? welcome to the real world, child.

I'm guessing the OP's grades weren't on the positive side of the bell curve as well; professors generally have a distaste for excuse-ridden slackers that can't pull their weight.

hmm, that sounds obscenely unfair, maybe we're not getting the entire story?

i don't get how you can consistently make it in just 2 minutes late, but hardly ever manage to get in on time? Seems like a simple fix to me, versus the total change in lifestyle needed if you were missing the class entirely?

I'm not taking jabs at you, but the professor probably interpreted your excuse the same way, especially if you were trying to push that '2 minutes late' thing - kind of whiny, irresponsible, etc.

in any case, if the situation truly was that severe, and the professor's 'policy' as clearly stated in the syllabus or whatever as he seems to be convinced it was, then you had no right waiting until after the grading period to go in looking for leniency.

no sympathy here, but hey- who am i?

it don't consistantly make it into class 2-3 minutes late. sometimes it's 5. 79% of the time this trimester, so far, i've been to class exactly on time. out of the 21% of the times that i was marked "absent," about 18% of it was because i was late.

the grading period isn't over. i've got 3 more weeks of school until finals. the worst part about it is that i was supposed to have gotten a letter notifying me of my attendance failure when it happened (2 weeks ago). i never got a letter. i found out about it from my professor. had i known, i could have withdrawn from the course, but the withdrawal deadline was last week.

that's the entire story.

Well, on one side I hate it when professors do that. On the other, if you know making it on time is a problem, and you understand his policy, then it is your responsibility to come in early to prevent this from happening.

Pitching a whiney-ass hissy-fit full of self-righteous indignation and threatening to cause physical harm to the professor and/or his property because he stuck to the rules as stated instead of bending them for you is what makes you a spoiled little sh1t.

Why don't you jsut do *everything* a little earlier every day? If you take your medication at6:00PM and it keeps you up till 2:00AM, why don't you take it at 5:30? jsut shift your entire schedule forward by a bit. I'm sure your medication doesn't have a clock in it that keeps it working until 2:00AM. If it work for 8 hours, then make that 8 hours start sooner.
