I was bored and decided to read the thread.

I some how get the feeling you were more than just 3 minutes late.

If you are becoming a doctor then 3 minutes to a patient can be the difference in life and death.

Yes, you can get fired for being 3 minutes late. Every work in a call center. If you are three minutes late you are screwing everyone else who is actually working. Another poster replied the same thing for his construction company.

You failed the class, just retake it and learn from it. If the medication was going to be such a problem you might to have wanted to address the situation before the class started.

A few posts back you said the meds only made you late 9 times out of the entire 4 month trimester. Unless you went off your meds, what about the umpteen other times you made it OK?

It isn't your meds.

One of these days, you're gonna have to get up earlier than you do now to get someplace on time.... and a freakin' doctor's note won't cut it.

i won't need my meds at that point because i won't need to be in class paying attention and studying.

what type of medical field are you going into. I sure as hell hope it doesn't require you pay attention.

i don't think you get it...

the meds = me being late, yet on task and capable of studying
no meds = me being on time, yet not on task or capable of studying

so, it'd be more likely that i would say, "hey, slim... you're not late; i'm just early. what were we supposed to do, again? oh, speaking of which, let me tell you about the time my wife yadda yadda yadda... it was hilarious.... blah blah blah....," which would be good for patient comfort and care (bedside manner).

Are you still trying to blame everything on your condition and medication?
Life is a bitch, helmets are optional.

I was really just playing around.

But seriously, how long do you plan on being on this medication? All your life?
If you can't cope with school without the meds, how do you expect to deal with residency?

Eventually, the crutch needs to go.

Actually, you don't get it. We were given the conditions for passing at the beginning of the term. It was YOUR responsibility to work with the prof to either change those requirements or meet them. It does not matter if he told you that you had to sing Happy Birthday when you walked into the classroom. You failed the language of the contract (that is what universities consider a syllabus). Welcome to the adult world. Grow up.

PS - if you are having such issues with the meds, talk to your doctor or get a new doctor for a new regimen. Another valuble lesson.

I commend your professor... he is emulating life.

Grow up you puss. Figure out how to live up to your responsibilities. If you are late to work consistantly you will loose your job, and that looks in my book to be a waste of your education. He might be saving you in the long run.

With only the minor difference that you actually PAY for college?

If I'm paying for something, I expect a certain amount of courtesy.

You pay for an education, the degree you have to EARN. He got exactly what he paid for.

Agreed, but I expect just and fair treatment while earning it. In my opinion, a required class at 7:20 is already cruel and unusual punishment, but a professor failing you for being a minute late at that time of the morning a few times is absolutely absurd.

It was more than a few, the op said it was 9 times. In a trimester that is like a 3rd of the time. What would absurd is if the professor doesn't stick to his own rules. It would also be unfair to the rest of the students who actually made a conscious effort to follow the rules.

Don't get me wrong...in the end, it is 100% his fault, but it's excessive.

It's like getting 5 years in the slammer for jaywalking. Technically, sure, you did break the law, but how about a little discretion? Punishment fitting the crime perhaps?

It's his fault, and the meds are NO excuse (I take them myself, and I'm late every day, but I always am anyway).

But that doesn't make the professor less of an asshole. How thin skinned do you have to be that you cant teach a class with someone creeping in the back completely disrupting you? At 7:20 AM!?!? I've never even heard of a class that early? It's not like he's coming in with a boombox under his shoulder. Most professors I know have no problem teaching a class of 400 with students coming and going most of the time, 50 of them talking etc...

Someone creeping in the back is NOT that much of a distraction that you need a professional to make an excuse for you.

1) OP should wake up earlier, this is scheduled so it's not like he cannot prepare for it
2) Professor is an ass. He is standing on principle, but also seams like a control freak sort of person.
3) Sucks for the OP that he has this problem

Personally, I hate attendance policies in school. If you can do the work going as many times as you need, and skipping other days to do other productive things, why cannot colleges allow this? Part of being an adult multitasking and time management, and it seems like mandatory attendance, when you can pass a class without it, teaches bad time management.

I had a professor that also hated people with laptops. Even though we would use them for class notes and to look up stuff to participate in class discussions (articles in Lexus Nexus, etc..). He gave me a B just because of this, when my grades were much higher (but he had a built-in subjective 'participation' grade).

I also hate mandatory attenance at work. I do a job where I can work from home and be more productive and cost the company less money. My previous employer allowed me to work from home 4 days a week, but my current will not. It's rather stupid, I spend a lot of time commuting (which the company subsidizes), sitting at my desk doing nothing and using up resources (office space, electricity, internet charges), and being bored. I think the time for mandatory attendance in a lot of things needs to stop. People can truly multitask now.

Accomidating you for being a couple mins late on a occassion is reasonable.

Good Luck.
Why should any professor accomodate someone when they're a couple minutes late? They should be doing what they're paid to do, to teach, not babysit kids like they're still in high school. If the kids wanna do well they'll show up, and if they haven't learned this it's not the prof's job to play the scolding parent IMO. That's why attendance policies are freaking stupid, especially penalizing someone because they're "late". If they missed a test, that's another thing. Being late shouldn't warrant a direct deduction of a student's grade because it has nothing to do with what they learned in class (although it could indirectly affect that, obviously). They are only hurting themselves come test time and they should face the penalty then, because that is all that matters (whether they learned or not).
