Ok I just upgraded to the fx 55 and had a asus av8 mb but sold it to a friend for the abit 3rd eye but am having tempature issues. On the asus it read 35 idle and 45 load Using a thermaltake hyper 6 which I was not able to use on the abit . On the abit I am using a zalman 7000 and am gettin idle temps of 50c and load of 78c? FIrst the abit in every bench out preforms the asus so for that I am happy! But the tempature has got me confused and in a state of panic? Is the abit not reading correctly or was the asus not reading corretly? I have the latest bios updated on the abit and have used artic silver 5 for paste(removed it and installed twice) Help anyone.

I was going to post something similiar to this. I also just installed an FX-55 and an Abit AV8. My temp readings are usually 50-54c for the CPU (idle).

Case temp is usually around 34c. I've read through a lot of posts, and it seems that I have a high idle temp. I've checked and rechecked the CPU Heatsink and Fan, and the heatsink is hardly warm, even the heatpipes are lukewarm to the touch.

Is it possible the Abit sensor is simply off, and reporting higher temps? I have not experienced any instability, even when under load.

my FX-55 is running 58-68 on the asus. But I think I used a little too much paste (and the crappy white stuff at that.) Waiting for some better grease. I hope it brings it down. I haven't even't tried any games yet.

Oh boy...the 2 extremes on the spectrum when it comes to boards and temperature calibration and reporting....Asus reads way low and Abit reads way high and between the two 20+c difference.....Nothing new here ppl....same thing with p4 chips...Abits read high on average 10-15c and Asus read 10c lower and somewhere in the between may be the truth....The ultimate thing is stabilty. Were you able to run stable at that 78c load?? if so the temps must be wrong or that thing should have froze up. trust me with this one, though 78 sounds really ridiculous. I have spent a lot of money buying high-end HSF cause I thought it would fix my problem and in the end a lot of money down the drain and not much better.

NOw I know the FX55 runs much hotter then any of the A64 chips naturally, but I think idle shopuld be in the low 40's and with a maximum of 108 watts at full load with a top notch HSF should only have a 15-17c swing max for high 50's low 60's load....

That sounds scary. If my ASUS reads low and I'm hitting 72C at load I must have done the world's worst job of installing my HSF. I do have a rather tight, enclosed case (one of the Lian-li 'quiet' cases). But I'll be applying better thermal next week and installing an NV Silencer which will hopefully carry out some of the hot air that the new 6800 GT will no doubt add.

If that fails, do you have any suggestions?

PS I was idling high for a bit, but now I'm at 50C. At 70 I do start to lose some stability.

I have one - I'll trade you my (Retail boxed) FX-53 939 for your FX-55. Heh-heh!

Seriously though - how much lower are we estimating the Asus board is reading than actual? It may not be too far off - and in that case your 72C CPU temp doesn't sound unreasonable to me (under full load).

One note on the NV Cooler - it works, but don't expect a HUGE temp decrease. Others who have used and reviewed the NV Cooler for the 6800 Series seem to have come to that conclusion.

The NV system uses an ultra-quiet, low volume fan that does not move a lot of air. And for compatibility and case clearance reasons there is about 5/16" of play between the NV ducting and the slots, so there has to be AT LEAST some heated air escaping the NV system back into the case. If you place your hand at the back of the case where the NV cooler exhausts the hot air you can feel the air being expelled, but it is not a very strong stream of air. Again, the combination of a low volume fan and "air leakage". But it does work.

I have an HIS Excalibur X800 XT PE (uses the Arctic Cooling ATI 4 for the ATI X800 Series). While it is an entirely different card the 6800 NV system works the same way. Let me just say that when I went from an ATI 9800 Pro 256MB equipped with a Zalman ZM80C + ZMOP-1 fan to my current videocard (with the system otherwise the same) my case temps dropped by 10-15F tops.

Also, bear in mind that the ZM80C and ZMOP-1 fan worked very well - so well in fact that after installing them my case temp went up about 8-10F as opposed to the stock ATI HSF. I believe the additional heat drawn off of the GPU by the Zalman components contributed to the case temp increase, even though I have two 80mm exhaust fans (besides the PSU fan).

(Wishful thinking), like I said, I'll trade ya for your FX-55 if you want...

My ASUS A8V + FX-55 + ATI Silencer setup hit 71C @ load (stock speed) with Thermaltake Venus 12 HSF.
Eventually replaced with waterchill and temp went down to 45 @ load (o/c 200MHz)

BTW the same setup is on my new Abit A8V now, and temp reading is 50C @ load (o/c 200MHz)

How about this, I'll trade you CPUs if you also trade your Vid card for my 6800GT
Hmmm....
Well, even though I would LOVE to have that FX-55 I couldn't bear to part with my HIS card (as if we really would trade eh?)!

I don't know where you can find the HIS Excalibur X800 XT IceQ II PE anymore. I pre-ordered my card from Super PC Mart (northern California) at the beginning of August for $550.00 (MSRP was $575.00), and Super PC Mart received them the third week of the month. After they blew through the 100 they received from HIS they upped the price to $580.00.

SUPER PC MART DOES HAVE THE HIS Excalibur X800 XT VIVO 256MB IceQ II AGP (non PE version) in stock as of this writing (2:15AM PST) they have 9 (nine). Here is a link to the Super PC Mart web page:

http://superpcmart.com/products/detail.cgi?sku=2121

I do know where I can get Retail FX-55s' shipped to me for under $900.00 but I think I'll wait a bit - I've burnt all my PC goody funds for a while. Maybe I'll upgrade to an FX-57 on 90nm or the bin after that on strained silicon.

Still - if I could sell my FX-53 for a good price I could get that FX-55 just for kicks! I feel the need, the need for speed!

My 6800GT isn't even out of the box yet I've reached my spending limit for this upgrade.. but thanks for the link. I'll check out that company for Christmas presents.

If I had a FX-53 I'd probably wait until something at least 1/3 faster - but that's just my rule (and truthfully, I just upgraded from an Athlon 1.4...so I'd really wait longer. When I feel the need for speed, my wallet usually laughs at me.
