FX-55 Overclock

What kind of voltage would you give to a FX-55 (default 1.5vcore) if you want it to go up by 200MHz?

there have been reports of these things hitting 2.8-3.0 on air so... give it a shot

If I give it 1.575vcore, it loads into windows, and it runs fine (IE, MSN, even with toast on for 30 min) until I run Prime95 (error after 1 min or so), or play any games (NFSU2, HL2)

what board do you have?

make sure your board isn't undervolting it at all. Sometimes even when you set it to 1.5v it will only actually be getting 1.45v or less.

AMD lists the range of the core voltage in their technical documentation. Look through it and it will somewhere say that you should not i.e. apply more than Vcc_core + 0.5V for Vcc_core (0.5V being the example here). There are formulas for every pin of your CPU and how much you can apply as a maximum before damaging the chip. Also keep an eye on the core's temperature, there are limits for that as well. Also note that what you set is not what you get. The board's regulators are not too accurate and heat takes its time to spread. Increase the voltage very slowly and with lots of tests in between (use BurnCPU). Use the limits of the technical documentation only as a limit if you don't find any other limit!

My board is Abit AV8, the included software is showing a 1.55v (when set to 1.50v) and a 1.60 (when set to 1.575v). Can I really trust the Abit software?

I think so, but I am not sure I know what a AGP and PCI lock is.
I can have AGP run @66MHz no matter what I do with HTT.
However, I am not playing with the HTT/Memory yet. I am overclocking the CPU by increasing the multiplier.

AGP and PCI lock is where they're locked at one clock; increasing the FSB on your CPU would normally increase the clock on everything in your comp but locks prevent that. Since you're not changing the FSB (or in your case, HT) of your CPU then you shouldn't worry about AGP/PCI lock.

I have an ABIT AV8. It sucks. First Abit mobo I can say that about. Stock is fine, but OC'ing is a nightmare, and the uguru locks up at 100% cpu every time I change the setting. I have to de-install and re-install. And the temps appear way off. (1.475 volts=61c full load at 2.2 ghz ??)

I am getting an (cough...) MSI neo2 Platinum as soon as christmas is over. I will find some cheap 3000 to put in this one.

Check the voltages in the BIOS; if the AV8 is anything like ABIT's P4 boards, it actually undervolts by a considerable margin.

if you are at stock speeds, and it isnt booting at 1.5 volts, I would seriously consider RMAing it. Definately wouldnt be happy if I got a slightly defective 800 dollar chip.

My computer boots up properly @ 1.5v @ stock 2600MHz
However, I am starting to doubt the accuracy of Abit EQ
when I set the vcore to 1.5v in the BIOS, Abit EQ shows a range of 1.52v-1.56v (1.55v most of time)
1.500v in BIOS -> 1.55v in Abit EQ in Windows
1.575v in BIOS -> 1.59v
1.625v in BIOS -> 1.69v
1.650v in BIOS -> 1.70v
1.700v in BIOS -> 1.70v still??

There is no real problem with the voltage regulators. As I said, check what the output really results in rather than trusting the labels. I believe the board makers give it a slightly higher voltage since they know they can do that and that it drops under high load. So make sure to read a setting of i.e. "1.7v" as a range of 1.7v-1.75v instead. If you are not willing to dare your hardware for the gain in performance, you should stop!

I know it's not easy to damage a CPU just by messing with the clcok and vcore. However, is there a value of voltage that you wouldn't go above especially in the case of an A64?

Most people would say about 1.7v with air and 1.75-1.8 with water.

i wouldnt go over 1.65 or so just because it cost's $800 (well, accually i wouldnt oc it at all, heck, i'm not even thinking about oc'ing my 3400+ that's on the way), but that's just me...

Which I didn't really want to because I just got rid of the ASUS A8V board 2 weeks ago.

All you did was change the position of two characters (A8V / AV8). You're going to have to do more than that if you want to push that chip to the max .
