FX5200 versus Radeon 9800 Pro?

i know that the 9800pro is immensely more powerful than the fx5200 as far as video cards go, but i'm trying to decide which card to get on a new pc for the parents, who don't play games, and for the most part will be using the computer to go online. i ordered a dimension 8300 3.0 with the fx5200 for them, but now i'm wondering whether it's worth going through the trouble (and spending the additional $120 or so) for the 9800 pro for my parents' computer. will the 9800 pro make a difference for web surfing, viewing and editing digital pictures, and possibly viewing and editing video? thanks for your input!

stick with the 5200.

video editing is cpu intensive. video card does not render images, just shows what the file tells it to.

thanks for the all input. it's good to know that the video card doesn't really affect the digital photo/video viewing and editing. it will save a little money. my dad asked what the video card is really used for, and i couldn't think of anything other than games.

any type of 3d rendering is what you need a hi-po videocard for... (games, 3d art programs, maybe some engineering programs??)

Yes, wrong forum. Heck buy used! Find a good ti4200 if you can. It is better than a 5200 and will challenge a 5600.

And yes, by the way, all agp cards are about to go the way of the dinosaur. No sense in putting up big bucks for one unless you want to wait at least nine months and buy a whole PCI Express system.

ha ha, that's a good idea. if they didn't live half way across the country, i'd be tempted to drop in my radeon 9500 (overclocked to 9700 equivalent using rivatuner) and take the 9800 pro. would be a nice way to get ready for HL2.

i must need more sleep, i read "Heck buy used! Find a good . . ." as "Heck buy used food!" and was like, huh?

pci express? wow, i must really be behind the times. i have no idea what that is.

that's what i figured. i was just saying that i literally read the words as "heck buy used food." don't know what i was thinking there. pci express sounds interesting. i'm tempted to get the ati 9800pro for my parents and then swap video cards, but i think i'll wait to upgrade my own pc for awhile, seeing as how the wife uses it primarily for work right now so i don't get to use it much for gaming. i guess that's what the xbox and tv are for.
