I just bought the fx5200 8x agp card and replaced the 4x agp Ti4400. Both are 128mb. I've actually seen a decrease in quality with the 5200. Any ideas on what could be wrong?

I've got the newest nvidia drivers installed.

You should have stuck with the Ti.

The 5200, offers DX9, but its crappy performance wise.

I believe tomorrow, I will be putting my 4400 back in. Which card is gonna give me the performance I'm looking for?

The 4400 was a high-end card in its time. The 5200 is an entry-level card. You won't typically see a low-end card outperform a high-end for for at least two generations (the 5200 is just one generation removed from the 4400, as the initial number vaguely indicates). The 4400 will be far faster than a 5200 in every way.

Whether that's fast enough for you is another matter. If you think your 4400 is becoming pokey, let us know your budget, the games you play, and whether you need to play at a specific resolution to accomodate an LCD.

5200 is a downgrade. You need a 5700Ultra to perform better than your ti-4400. 5200 is closer to Geforce4MX in performance.

jeez, nick, for once I agree with you!

If he had done any looking here, he would have known that the 5200 is a thinly disguised mx.

why dont people research before blindly purchasing a video card?

I did some research nick, picked me up a 9800XT, I got a coupon for HL2 as well, but we all know that will never come out.

I researched a little bit, the only reason I bought the 5200 was because the FX is newer and the card was an 8x AGP. I don't go and blindly purchase things and I had no idea that the fx5200 would perform this bad compared to my 4x Ti4400

I don't work for a computer store and after this, I wouldn't recommend it to anybody.

yes

you made an ignorant buying decision based on the model number just like the nvidia marketing hounds hoped you would; when in fact the model number isnt an indication of hot it performs against other geforece cards, but rather the 5 is a prefix for the geforce 5 family, and the 200 means its worth that many pennies on a *good* day.

What's wrong? You bought a 5200!
The GF4 4400 you replaced can whip it even in dx9 apps!
If you're looking for a replacement for the GF4 4400...if you don't want to pay over $200...9800 Pro or FX 5900. Otherwise, whether you want to pay less or more, wait.

AGP8x only offers more bandwidth to the cards, it has nothing to do with the actual card's speed. Given that a 4 year old GeForce 2 Ti (AGP2x) will outperform the FX5200 at DX7/8 games, you really downgraded.

Well you obviously didn't do enough research. If you had researched, you would have also found out that the performance difference between agp4x and 8x is virtually nothing. Oh well, better luck next time. If you want a decent upgrade go for an fx5900.
