If you're lucky you'll be able to hold out until nehalem...I wish I had been disciplined enough to do that.

nehalem, hhhmm........4-core or 8-core with integrated memory controller for DDR3...yummy.

I got two of them back then. First for the $139 @Newegg. Second for... forgot exactly how much, but around $60 because it was damaged. Around 1/5 of the pins were bent, some to the point of being flattened against the CPU. I repaired it. Anyways, sold the first a while back, and just received a check for the second from a friend.

No need to act like a dick. Some people have money and they'll spend it however they choose.

I bought an FX-55 a year ago from Newegg for like $139 or something. It was a good deal at the time. I've had it clocked at 3 ghz ever since.

I've got an FX-55 in mine. So far it's holding up except for the whole encoding part. I don't do much of that and, if I do, I just set it up to encode when I'm asleep. In the morning I wake up and do what I need to do.

I was looking at upgrading to an Intel Dual Core, but I want to wait and see what the next batch of processors do from both companies before making a decision.

I haven't OC'd my chip yet and I got in on the same deal as everyone else seemed to last year. Perhaps I should monkey around with the chip. This way if it blows I can just use that as an excuse for an upgraded proc/mobo.

Oh hey - do me a favor and pick that up? I dropped my enormous wallet on the ground in front of you.

EDIT: You know what? Here, take 20 bucks and go buy yourself some commas to punctuate with.

You are Correct, the Desktop variants will NOT contain the Integrated Memory Controller. Unless Intel changes its stance.

I bought mine when Newegg put them on sale. It was and still is a great chip for anyone who doesn't need to multi-task much. Moved to the X2-5600 a couple of months ago (lower wattage) and now I need to find a happy place for the trusty old '55.

I paid ~$800 each for two 4800+ x2's last january.

However I upgraded one to an e6850 last month and believe this time atleast I timed my upgrade much better.

No wining... I paid $1500 for 2 Opteron 248's, $450 for a motherboard, and $500 for 2 gig of memory. Now (3 years later) I can;t sell them for $500 total ! Thats $2500 to $250 (estimated) in 3 years (that doesn't count the $2000 in SCSI stuff).....The only thing I do have is a very fast SCSI array for 92 gig !

yeah, you could buy 5 e6850's for $1600 now...that is probably a decent price/performance improvement

wanna know the truth? my old i850 3.06 hyper threading Northwood using Rambus memory feels faster which i bought in 01 (RDR memory)

LOL - I kinda feel the same way with my OR840 2P P!!! and 2gb rdram/ Win2k. That 160 SCSI might have something to do with it, too Pieced it together for a whole lot less than the cost of a FX55 !

i'm not sure it's quite fair to be evaluating your fx-55 based on technology and prices now. that chip came out so long ago, and while it probably wasn't worth the $1000 that some people spent, it certainly had the performance and overclockability to warrant a price higher than it is now. it's being driven down in relative performance and value because of current technology and prices years after the fx-55 was introduced.

i still think the opteron 144 and 3000+ processors that i had years ago were worth the money i spent on them even if i can get them for 1/3 the price (or less) now.

Yeah, in hindsight, I just kind of threw a bunch of money at my rig to make it go I know much, much more now.

Anyhow, the temptation to upgrade to an x2 3800 or an opty 165 and OC the hell out of them is certainly there. The more cores, the better.

the only reason to go to dual core is if your fx55 is bogging down on you a lot (ie mucho multitasking) or you DC hardcore. Trust me, I upgraded from an fx55 to opt180 as mentioned earlier in this post, and I ended up spending much more than I bargained for after blowing the mobo and psu. If you're getting good perf out of the fx55 then you're probably better off waiting, at least until something REALLY cool comes out. Like, um, I dunno, QX9650 maybe...

Do not torture yourself with guilt, Grasshopper. A $1000 upgrade every year is sustainable. I'm trying desperately to hold out till Nehalem but I'm concerned that the initial cost will jump and that Intel will charge a premium for the mainstream chips (I remember when 386 chips were +$1000 and the mobos were at least $800), so while my current system does everything I need it to I'm still gazing enviously over at the Intel sandbox. The 6850s and e6600s are mighty tempting...
