FX5600 and FX5600 Ultra

can anyone tell me what's the difference between the two? I can't find any reviews that compare them.

To make things more confusing the new flip chip version of the FX 5600 Ultra has 400Mhz core /400Mhz memory

Actually the new FX 5600 Ultra(flip chip version) is not a bad card.

Conclusion:

The new GeForceFX 5600 Ultra spec is definitely a competitive product. Unofficially it is the GeForce4 Ti 4600 replacement and it does well in earning that recognition. The new packaging (no not the box it comes in for those of you that skip to the conclusion) allows the GPU to run cooler and clock higher than the original 5600 Ultra GPU that for the most part never came to market.

When are the "New" 5600 Ultras coming out? I am looking to get either a 9600 Pro or the new 5600 Ultra depending on the price. I am willing to spend $170 on a new vid card and no more.

Just in case you do find a spare $30, let me recommend a 9700 (non-Pro). It will far outperform the 9500P/9600P/5600/U, especially at higher IQ settings (res/AA/AF). Certainly worth waiting for, IMO, but a 9600P has its own advantages (less heat production, no extra power source required).

Edit: It seems you don't need to spare extra change, just extra courage. NewEgg is currently stocking refurbed Powercolor 9700NP's for ~$170. I'm not sure what the warranty period is, but NewEgg has a good enough reputation that I'd trust them promptly helping you if you happen to get a DOA card.

stay away from the 256mb 5600. its a worthless addition of memory.

and also those are usually clocked at 275/500
