Unreasonably paranoid and overly litigious parents with a 'we need to think about the children' society = Expensive liability for such businesses. I visited my nieces day care once and I have never wanted to snap so many necks. The kids were fine. The parents...

We pay about $825/month for our son. He's out in September, we are looking forward to that extra money.

I pay $100/wk times two right now. When we move closer to work in a year or two I expect it to go up to $300-350.

Well, it is only your child that they're watching so yeah. Guess I'm lucky not having had one.

If day care is too expensive, then you or your wife quit your job and have 1 person work and 1 person stay home. Can also get rid of the 2nd car since the person who stays home won't need one.

Daycare is expensive, but usually the wife still comes out ahead by working.

You can still complain about the cost of daycare. Just as you can complain about the cost of your mortgage or property taxes.

I pay rent, and I put twice what I pay for rent into savings every month. And I don't complain about rent, because that's what it costs to live where I live. Actually my rent is incredibly low, it should be at least $200 higher for the area.

Usually? dude if she is usually coming out ahead then she needs to quit. to me that is saying that sometimes her whole check goes to pay the sitter. so who's bank account is most of the money she makes goes to? yours her theirs.

Yes, it is a TOTAL shakedown. My wife and I are trying to have our first, and she is trying to convince me that she should quit her job and just start her own daycare. She is using the very compelling argument of how much I can expect to pay for the average 3-day a week daycare operation, and I must say, she is winning... There is hardly anything to it, and most of the kids are so young, they might as well be sedated.

Of course any new parent knows the pitfalls of parenthood, and that it is full of bottomless pits for you to dump truckloads of your hard earned money into... with little hope of getting anything for it. I would lump babies into the old saying involving boats, cars, and women... ;-)
There are several cons that come with having your wife using your house as a daycare center.

There will always be kids around your house, and sometimes the kids are going to be there while you are home from work. And, your wife might work herself out of a professional job if she stay home too long.

Wow. Thankfully my wife and I work opposite shifts and can split the care between us. Not much time for the two of us but the savings is significant.

My mom retires in 2 years so we just need to make it that long...

Back in the day, families were larger and the wife stayed home. People were content living more modestly.

Cost of living back in the day is no where near what it is today. You could work a factory job and support a family. You can't do that today.

Ours got so expensive with 4 kids that we ended up hiring one of the daycare workers as our nannie. Less expensive and didn't need to worry about pick up times.

After that, we ended up buying a daycare - if you can't beat them, join them. Unfortunately, too many parents did not pay and it was difficult getting in enough replacement parents.

OP, I feel your pain. I remember having to pay for DC for my two sons ... but it was nothing as even remotely as high as what you are paying.

At the end of the day you are left with grown kids who will soon be leading you around by the hand, taking care of everything that you used to do, making all of your important decisions for you ... and ultimately saying goodbye and having to bury you in the ground.

OP, all I can tell you is to do the best you can ... and hope for the best!
