Yes, it's expensive as hell, but it works for us. Both my kids are in Montessori schools and not only do they enjoy it, they are learning a ton. I also appreciate how the social "immersion" with their classmates spurs personal growth.

I know we have more options and curriculum choices once she gets to be a bit older, and I can get a little bit more excited about forking out the dough then. I think right now the curriculum for 7 week olds at one of the daycares is focused on if the child turns over or focuses on faces etc.

Yeah, there is only so much you can do to enrich the environment of a really young tot like that. As they get older, things get more interesting. My daughter is 7 and already doing little reports, field trips, and personal projects in addition to the "three R's". It's not for every child or family, but it was definitely the right choice for us.

My wife, who is 6 months pregnant, just started teaching this year. We are incredibly lucky on the school that hired her. It has it's own daycare, that handles newborns on up, for about 900 a month, which they will deduct from the wife's pay. It's expensive, but definitely not more than she makes.

Wait.. once they are over like 3 don't they just go to public school? Why is daycare still needed at that point?

we're pretty lucky. our daycare is at a church and its only ~25$ per full day. We never had our kids in full days 5 days a week, so at our peek with 2 kids in it cost us 150$ a week. We're down to $75 a day with one kid in 2 full days and 2 half days.

lol 3. You don't remember kindergarten very well do you?

"In Kentucky, under state law, all children must be enrolled in school between the ages of 6 and 16. Children can enter primary school at age 5, but only if their 5th birthday is on or before October 1 of the current school year."

Well my point still stands. Fausto was talking about his 7 year old daughter.

We have a church directly behind our house that I could hit with a rock that has a daycare for around the same price($125/week 500/mo). We checked it out but it was not up to snuff, down in the basement with a mistmatch of beds and equipment, and it seemed like they spent a lot of time with the tv. Also there were the religous videos(I'm a heathen, wife isn't) but I was mostly willing to overlook that but the general condition of the place wasn't there.

If they do that daycare will just inflate to $1500-$2000 a month then instead of the $800-$1500 it runs now. Same concept as student loans and tuition costs. More money subsidizing costs and costs go up.

Yup, for you white folks. It won't affect Korean day care prices.

PS actually i don't think it will push up demand to affect pricing that much. The system is complicated enough that most people don't take into account flex tax savings when calculating they can afford day care. Plus the ones that "need" it are generally middle-lower income, the tax savings just isn't that much.

the church we send our kids to is the church my wifes family goes to. My wife even went there as a toddler and one one of the ladys that looked after her is still there and was looking after both of our kids too. Place has been around a while and is the best in town. When my son got shipped off to kindergarten here in town this year, they asked if he went to preschool and his teacher said that the kids who come from there are always way ahead of the average kid. Its a great place.

We have sacrificed a ton in our lives to allow my wife to stay at home and raise our children. To us, its the best way to do it.

The amount that people pay for daycare is outrageous. My coworker he was just saying she spend $12K in 2010... and she only works 3 days a week. Ouch.

those are the people i have a real issue with. my personal opinion is that they chose working over kids and in my book that is just wrong.

How many days a week, and how many hours per day? And what is included?

We pay $980 per month for our son's daycare. He is there from 8AM to 5PM, five days a week. His daycare provides everything except diapers (2 main meals, 2 snacks, all the toys you could imagine, etc.). If you assume an average of 22 weekdays per month, that means that we are paying for roughly 198 hours of care. That comes out to $4.95 cents per hour. In contrast, the lowest hourly rate we can find for a babysitter in our area is $10 per hour.

So, while the amount paid per month is high, the hourly rate is exceedingly low. Not even minimum wage.

that still almost $12,000 a year. thats a lot of money.

Sometimes working is for the kids. It lets people afford family vacations, extra curricular activities, college, etc...

WTF? 2 50k paychecks is 100k. Lets say 33% tax rate, you bring home 66,000, or $5,500 a month.

Your expenses right now are $4,763 a month, leaving you $737.

I'm looking for other things that I don't see like medical/dental costs, home owners insurance (maybe included in your mortgage includes that), 401k funding, clothing, or savings?

We make a bit more than that.
