I'll say this much for Lotus Notes, like all IBM products at least it has this going for it:
It might be slow, but at least it's hard to use!

As the OP of this thread, after going through another miserable day using Lotus Notes, I can reassure you, it sucks for the end user as far as a mail client.

I'll add a bit more to the thread instead of expressing my distaste for the product

As a mail client I would have to once again agree that the UI is absolutely atrocious, lacks certain 'common-sense' features that you would think would be in a mail client and has random quirks that make its usage kind of cumbersome. There are lots of really random bugs in 6.5 as far as the calendar goes and if people change their date on a meeting, sometimes it won't update properly, stuff like this.

This being said, its DB capabilities and programming with LotusScript really unlock this product's use, domino(server and messanger client), etc make up for these issues at least a little bit. It's very functional in the environment I work in and I pretty much use it constantly for scheduling meetings, organizing projects, having document repositories and things like this. I've worked in places with both Exchange and Lotus and while the ease of use of Outlook (though it's a wretched program) made tasks quicker for me in some cases, Notes is still better in my opinion.

Lotus Notes is awesome... very powerful software for managing a whole lot more than just email. Once you learn how to use it (if you're smart enough ) you'll appreciate all the glorious features.

Seriously, if you're having this many problems talk to your admin.

We have a dedicated Notes admin who knows it inside and out, and nobody (~40 users) has a problem with Notes. Primary use of it in our office is as an email client/workflow app.

As someone else noted, Notes takes less than 10 seconds to open on my laptop.

Outlook takes less than 4 seconds for me, whats your point. everything is relative. you can take 5 minutes to open up notepad if your laptop is messed up

We have over 2000 users in the building I work at alone. Somewhere north of 135,000 users across the country. Trust me, there are plenty of problems with Notes.

We have Notes at work and everyone hates it It's such a piece of horse's ass I don't know why any company uses it. We're spposed to be upgrading to Noets 7 which hopefully will at least be usable. But I would kill to be able to go back to Outlook to at least get some decent functionality.

My new job uses Lotus Notes. I use it as an email client, the calendar, and other things. I have had zero problems with it as an email client in the past few months. It's different from outlook but still very easy to understand. I don't recall ever being confused. I also don't have long load times either. In fact, it looks to be very powerful and I would rather use it than outlook.

My personal experience is that LNotes is the best groupware / workflow app out there right now. It works very well for collaborative efforts, scheduling meetings, joint "to do" lists, calendars, sharing databases etc etc.

Outlook is simply an email client, and a horrible one at that. If you just want an email client, Eudora is far superior to outlook, and isn't a virus magnet like outlook.

Also, the notes sametime client (built into lotus notes) provides instant messaging without having to "phone home". Most major corporations are not going to allow desktop apps to connect directly to some server out on the internet, so Yahoo/AOL/MSN etc messengers don't work. The sametime client works inside the firewall to allow the employees to communicate without allowing connections to those outside the company.

As I said, I am talking about the mail client only. Mail client has ridiculously annoying bugs, and a horrible UI to work with.
