My friend installed 2x4GB sticks on a Gigabyte board. They were on the correct dual-channel DIMM slots. As usual, they defaulted to 1600MHz. When attempting to activate XMP, however, we failed to boot into the BIOS. After messing around with a couple of settings, we booted successfully into the BIOS and it claimed we were at 1866, with XMP enabled.
CPU-Z told us a different story.
(Also, the base clock is set to 200MHz but always runs at 201 for some reason, and that kinda throws everything off)
Not only are we at 1600MHz, but with some scary low timings. Is it possible that CPU-Z made a detection error? Why would something like this happen? How do I into XMP correctly?
