G5 or build my own dual core system

Im beginning to start up my own music production ( protools, etc) and I was wondering which system I should purchase: G5 or build my own E6700 system. Thanx

Macs are pretty stable machines. I've had much better, although not perfect, luck with video apps under OS X than I have had in Windows. Also, if you buy a G5 rather than the newer Mac Pros, you will not only be saving money but you will also be able to support any existing Mac software natively (nice if you're familiar with Universal Binaries and whatnot).

I'm gonna start learning Protools 6 in my audio production class next week. Protools 6 has both Mac and PC version. Is there any reason why you're choosing G5 over a C2D? The latest Mac Pros use C2D Xeon version. If you're gonna get a Mac, get the Mac Pro. But the E6700's gonna be cheaper than the Mac Pro.

multimedia creation? everyone recommended macs... IN THE PAST

new era; dualcore, PCI-e, X-fi studio quality sound, SCSI express, etc.

there are enough content creation programs for Windows where if you past up the Conroe today for a mac, you are living in the past. obviously the conroe is faster, but besides that, I think macs are hella rip off when you could do things faster with Windows based machines.

Well see, my friend is the one that's going to be doing all the production and he's real familiar with Mac OSX. Thats why I was considering the G5. However, I do a few builds a year and it's hard to turn down a 6700 cpu when it's a lot cheaper that a G5. Thanx for the responses!!

I don't know... If you've got the money for it, a Mac might be a great idea. Those new Xeon-based Mac Pros are killer, if you can afford it. And of course you can always install Windows if you ever feel like it.

Preciate it. I think Im gonna post on the musician forum and compare the two. But as of right now Im leaning towards the build primarily because of price.
