Most games are GPU-bound. Since most games aren't multi-proc/core aware the equivalent of a 2.4GHz A64 is good enough to feed the G80. I'd rather upgrade my video card than upgrade my CPU.

If gaming FPS is important and you run at a res higher than 1280x1024, the GPU is going to be the make or break component.

The problem with really testing a game and putting the max limit is that we don't actually have DX10 yet. Vista is still too buggy to run games on. What I want to see are the Flight Simulator 10 charts with the 8800GTX. Most people are ECSTATIC to break 20FPS with all the sliders up in this game, with dual core processors, 4gb of ram and high end sli/crossfire setups. This game is ahead of its time (as flight sim always has been)! I'm pulling around 20 with the sliders on low-medium, and it looks flipping spectacular, significant visual improvement over Flight Sim 9 (A Century of Flight). This is one game I will say benefits from the dual core processor, mainly to free up background process's and dedicate more power to the game itself.

Or like other MS products it could have horrible code.

wow..this thread and this http://www.systemshock.co.za/forums/index.php?showtopic=8371&hl=
pretty much destroys any reason to upgrade your cpu if you are using a good AMD cpu

if you are a gamer..get a good quality cpu(ie e6400, opteron 165 170 OCed, X23800-4800 OCed, single core AMD oced as well) with best price and pair with the best gpu..period

this arguement has been around for awhile now..not really new but the link shows it so well

yes a lower res the C2D helps but is anyone going to see a fps difference between 120-180..doubt
higher res..get the same fps essentially

all the talk that the C2D was helping gaming looks not so good

As usually Lopri...points out a great point and how various forums totally miss the reality

Ugh..not a big gamer and wanted to try C2D becasue of hype..looks like money spent on cpu, ram was not worth it at all

I have top admit I do not use the power of my Opteron@2800..let alone a C2D @3400+(assuming I oc ok)...I use x800xl and game @1280x1024..seems ok..but wanted a faster gpu to see all the fuss..I could used the upgrade $$ on ram/cpu and gotten the 800GTX and been way ahead
e6600 $270
ram crucial 10th anniv $230
new gpu x1900xt $240
total= $740

8800 GTX on same setup=$600-650

For me I want to try C2D to see if my speech recognition is improved on better processor..I suspect this to be the guess(esp from P4 3.o on lappy...and likely on the opteron setup as well)

Link's broke. I noticed a tremendous difference between my Opteron 165@2700 and my E6400@3200. Smoother, faster unzipping files, MUCH faster encoding files (especially video), and runs cooler. $100 bucks cheaper too!

Ah, yes, I did see that. Firingsquad did something similar here.
http://firingsquad.com/hardware/geforce_8800_gtx_gts_amd_cpu_scaling/

The level of IQ that the GTX or even the GTS provide give us the freedom to run w/ 1600x1200+ w/ 4XAA+. And @ those settings, only a few games seem to be CPU bound. And of course those are games w/ older engines that already provide 60+ minimum frames. If I were to go w/ a non oced chip, it'd be the 6600 from Intel. If you don't mind OC, I'd go w/ the 6300 or 6400. Not even going to provide a rec for AMD as I tend to switch sides once a co. surpasses the other...much like the X2 > HT P4.
