If it were to happen, why exactly would the demise of ATI be a good thing? NVIDIA proved last year (and will most likely do so again in about a month) that they are not shy at all about keeping their prices high when there is no immediate competition. I don't fault them for this, I would do it too... However, as a consumer, I don't really understand why you would favor this arrangement.

Who wouldn't? They're cheaper and still likely to reach those idiot-proof factory overclocked frequencies or higher. Heck how many people bought an underclocked X1900XTX? The X1900XT was and still is a great seller because it can easily hit the frequencies that you would normally have to pay a premium for.

No, we have the 7950GT because Nvidia wants to bleed the market and substitute one card (7900GT) with two cards (7950GT / 7900GS). They're money hungry and have too many extra 7 series GPU's laying around, so they introduce as many different cards as they can in an attempt to confuse buyers with 100 different Geforce 7 names and get rid of stock that they originally wouldn't have put in any of their other "original" products.

Why does that not sit well with their original scenario? Laying off a third of the company could suggest that they're trimming the fat and excusable parts of their industry in order to gain some effeciency. ATI's workforce gained a lot from the AMD merger, why wouldn't they lay some no longer needed positions off?

As far as the rumor goes, I thought that GStanfor might actually have something about R600... It is certainly important news (especially for those people involved), but I honestly don't think that the layoffs will have any practical affect on ATI's gpu development programs.

Agreed. The AMD merger itself will have more to do with ATI's future GPU's than this ATI specific layoff.

I suggest reading what democoder has to say carefully. ATi had better hope R600 is solid, they will be in no position to do anything about it if it isn't judging by the scale of the layoffs.

Oh, I'm definitely excited about G80, as I was NV40, G7x, R5xx... I'm planning on getting probably either a single 8800GTX or 8800GTS SLI. I have decided to limit my spending a tad bit, so I might forego an ATI card this gen. Maybe I'll switch sides at the refesh, we'll see.

Honestly though, my excitement for anything gets dampened really quickly when I have to hear someone cheer with glee at the idea of people getting laid off a month before the holidays just because that someone has a hard on for a different video card. It's kinda sad actually, and I don't really understand why anyone else would defend someone like that.

I see OCHungry is a man who shares my views on intel.

The pc hardware market is large and resilient. Engineers will easily find work with other companies. It's kind of hard to be sympathetic about these types of people losing their jobs when they are on 80K US per year. In the region I live, most earn $15K or under and unemployment has sat at 40% or higher for the best part of 15 years.

No doubt we'll now see the rise of XGI or some other small video comany. I'll just sit back and watch the fanatics flock to whoever emerges, just like they flocked to ATi from 3dfx...

I love the x1900 cards (flaws and all) but am always looking for the best, fastest cards out. This moment ATI has the upperhand. Maybe Nvidia will regain the crown as it did with 7800GTX next gen.

It will always be from here on out a frozen point in time between November and January in which only the G80 and X1950 are the highest models from both companies without any future products coming from either camp....:roll: Thanks for "the truth".

I'm going to agree with you for the sake of argument here.

Now that I'm in a state of agreement about Nvidia's superior success.......so what? I got a product from a supposed "inferior" company that does things for me better than a product from a "superior" company.

What does that say about Nvidia? They're the bomb!! Their gross increase was [insert stat from Gaystanfor...err..GstansforGay....I mean...Gstanfor..yeah that's it]!!!! They are such a better company!!!!!!

But when I buy from them, I don't buy their company, I buy their product. Whether they're making $100 a year or $100,000,000 a year makes no difference. I only care about what goes into my computer and what it can do, not what goes into their bank account.

Realize what? That the Geforce 7 competes against ATI in games, has inferior physics capabilities, can't do F@H, has a shotty AF from default, and whose AA modes are only unrivaled until some true HDR is added on? What I realize is that ATI's hardware engineers should merge with Nvidia's software engineers and then we would seriously have one badarse GPU. But, that wouldn't be good for competition because, well, no one could compete with that. So, with newer technology emerging soon, I'll sit back and enjoy another showdown between red and green until I can see who's doing better so that I can get the most for my money without having to bend over for one and only one company's product. Until then, I'll take my chances with Ray Adams and ATI's hardware.

Lets get back on topic, G80 ownage.. destruction of ATIs holiday sales (yet again), ATI software and legacy support (no <R300 support in Vista, sweet! yet another ATI innovation), and video cards rather than attacking people.

What nitro said was dead-on with what you consider to be "on topic". As far as attacking people, Gstanfor's a big boy, he can take care of himself can't he? I've seen him call numerous members things like "fuckwit" and you didn't exactly intervene then. I honestly don't see the connection between his treatment and how that affects you.

Call me rude, blunt, a troll, fanboy, etc. whatever, I just think that it's high time you kids grow some brains instead of constantly strutting the "Our company is better than yours!!" fiasco when it isn't anyones company to begin with but a few select board members and CEO's. It's an altogether sad attempt for geek wars. Personal preference is fine as long as it can be rationalized, but you guys both trump the same pathetic cards in every post.

I would take Crusaders advice and lets all rejoice in the fact that DX10 hardware is upon us. Ya ATI is rumored to be doing lay offs ......and...? The R600 is still coming which is good also for us because I sure don't want to spend $1000 for G80 and I am pretty sure Gstanfor and Crusader don't want that either. Didn't Intel do this too around the time of conroe? And that has been a disaster right? Yep those conroe chips suck like a saw toothed granny suffering from epileptic seizures, right?

So far the hardware is looking great now bring on the sexy games.
