Of course, but I doubt that nearly a third of a company is totally redundant and it doesn't really sit very well with happy happy sunshine growth scenario ATi and AMD put forth when the merger was fist announced.

Sadly I think this is going to badly damage AMD, they were crazy to consider this in the first place and the proposed number of layoffs shows just how fine a line they are going to have to tread.

I stopped reading after I read that because clearly this article is not directed at me...

As far as the rumor goes, I thought that GStanfor might actually have something about R600... It is certainly important news (especially for those people involved), but I honestly don't think that the layoffs will have any practical affect on ATI's gpu development programs.

Marketing, managment, sales, inventory control... theres tons of redundant positions.

I seriously doubt any of their cuts are in R&D.

I suggest reading what democoder has to say carefully. ATi had better hope R600 is solid, they will be in no position to do anything about it if it isn't judging by the scale of the layoffs.

It does seem as though the ole ATi sewer system may be in grave danger of going the way of the Dodo though, and that's a good thing.

If it were to happen, why exactly would the demise of ATI be a good thing? NVIDIA proved last year (and will most likely do so again in about a month) that they are not shy at all about keeping their prices high when there is no immediate competition. I don't fault them for this, I would do it too... However, as a consumer, I don't really understand why you would favor this arrangement.
