good :! because vista is delayed and i think we can wait for a delay...

ATI is coming out with a new core R581 ... it should fix its short coming as in new quite cooling system , 80nm die , lower temp than x1900xt and less power consumption.

What exactly does "missed tape out" mean? Is that a scheduling oversight, or does it mean it was delayed because it's not ready for tape out.

Thats a good point. I mean what does missing tape out mean. I would think that could be done at any time, So maybe they set a date missed and came back a week later. It shouldn't be a Full moon endevor where they have to wait months before having it taken care of.

IIRC, NV's CFO said as early as July. So now maybe both ATI and NV will release at the end of '06, as planned/rumored, tho I wouldn't be surprised if we see both arrive with Vista in 1Q07 (a year after X1900/7900).

Not really sure what to make of this considering I didnt expect it until the late Aug-Early Oct timeframe.

It doesnt really give any hints as to why it happened.

What is this about a new core R581? Any links or time frame when this might be available?

EDIT - forget what I said, I just saw the other post

I checked Mike's Hardware and a quick check didn't come up with any info on R581 (although I didn't look very hard). It looks like the summer/fall is going to bring two refreshes for ATI's low and mid-end with 80nm parts (including, reportedly, a replacement for the X1600XT that is faster than the X1800XT!), but I'm not sure if the R581 is just wishful thinking or what?

Because, with R600 coming this fall, it doesn't make too much sense for ATI to refresh their just-released X1900 cards so soon.

1) Because it'll probably be a better performing card for DX9 than the current offerings.
2) Because new things are shiny and therefore cool

The extra speed would be nice, but I happen to agree I wont be buying any DX10 cards.. or any card beyond my 7900GT until after Vista is released.

I'm sure many would agree with me since that seems to be the sentiment in this very thread.
IMO releasing new cards before Vista is a waste of time. Though I'm sure they'd love to hit the Christmas season.. that just isnt as beneficial with MS pushing back Vista till 07.

ATI/NV is going to sell butt loads of cards in Back to School and Christmas whether or not they release new ones or not.
I think its time they filled in their low end of the X1900 and GF7 lineup and quit releasing new high end parts alone. Good opportunity to do so here.

I'm keeping my 7900GT as long as possible (lets hope til early 08).
I was woundering, if i install vista, i can still play all the latest games, just with older shaders?

would depend on the game itself, but I see no reason why not

I bet the majority of 1st gen DX10 cards will be used in WinXP machines where they will be limited to DX9 anyways.

Unless there is a DirectX 10 SDK for WindowsXP. I can't imagine Windows limiting DX10 to Vista. That would prevent most if not all game developers (other than MS) from using it.

Yeah, I thought maybe he was using a wrestling analogy, but apparently not.

Driver model required by DX10 apparently limits it to Vista. This is why I am saying DX10 may be the slowest implementation of DX yet as the base for DX9 is so huge and has no way up upgrading.

MS has made it very clear that DX10 will not run on Vista. The G80 will likely be a fast DX9 card with enough boxes checked to make it a DX10 compliant card. By the time Vista actually come around, nvidia will likely have a refresh ready for the R600 and Vista.

I agree with roberR1. I think this is why NV is taking that 'hybrid' approach first. Vista isnt due til Q1 07.
