it is estimated that britains population collectively owes £1 Trillion pounds. 2 many people spending too much of what they dont have.

and as mentioned with house prices increasing, taxes going up and new taxes added, and job cuts and general increases in the price of cars (example new land rover freelander is much more expensive than the old...though it is a better car, new citroen picasso is also much more expensive than the old) etc i dont think people can really pull off the big spends anymore

How can you americans even complain about hardware prices? Not only do you have the cheapest prices in the world, your salaries are through the roof.. 600$ here is for many people, a MONTHLY SALARY... Thats why so few people here have high end cards I guess... But when you make 5K$ a month, 600$ looks like a joke

That sounds like a good deal... where can I get a 360 with HD DVD for 450?

It's all relative. If you were used to $500 for a video card in your local currency and suddenly the trend started leaning towards $650 a card, you'd be complaining too. It's no different here. I'm pretty sure most of the people on these boards can afford one, they just don't want to pay for increasingly expensive video cards.

minimum wage is less than $6 ... times 40 hours a week = $350 minus taxes

... so ~ $300 a week for employed poor americans doesn't buy much videocard after housing
and food

or twice your MONTHLY SALARY

[and when you consider most americans are SLAVES to credit .... and will never own their own home ....

Well its just that at least on this site, everyone seems to make 50K/year or more, and even say "thats barely enough to survive" lol seriously, either they are used to too many luxuries or I dont know, people dont really have an idea of what it takes to survive with just the essencials... Anyway I dont wanna drag this off topic so carry on

All can be blamed on Vista.
I actually blame nVidia for this. They have no Vista drivers for G80 and their current 97.02 drivers for XP have a lot of problems with them.

I just moved from Texas to the Seattle area.

I barely managed to sell my house for $150k, and it was a big, nice house.

Here, I'd have to pay $750k+ for what I had there - and it ain't happening. There's just no way I could even begin to afford something like that.

Sheesh, most houses (dinky) run $300-$400+ in this area, and I can't really afford that - so I'm not.

I guess what I'm trying to say is how ever much you make, it's all relative to the costs of where you live. Yeah, Salaries are higher here, but they're not anywhere near THAT much higher.

If I couldn't afford one of these video cards I'd have to look at my 22,000 post count and wonder if I shouldn't be doing something more productive with my spare time.

You gotta pretty much expect that with a radically new architecture.

I was tempted to shell out for a GTX, but i know better, ill get the die shrunk, clocked up, and ironed out version 6-8 months down the road and be better off

What sucks for me about not living in the states and being a hardware enthusiast is the lack of availability.

I would KILL to be able to just log to Newegg, click a few buttons and have the hardware delivered to my home a few days later, with the possibility of smooth RMAing in case something goes wrong.

For example: I'm traveling to the US this Xmas. And I'm planning on building a new rig. So I'll buy the parts that I either can't get in my country for decent prices (a 20.1" WS LCD, for instance and a 8800GTS, as well as 2GB of DDR2 RAM and a copy of Vista Ultimate OEM) and stuff I just can't plain get (like a decent, brand name PSU). The rest of the stuff I can get where I live.

The problem is I'll have to rush it. I wanted to wait until Q2 '07 for this upgrade, wait until the vista and DX10 dust settles a bit. Wait for ATI's response to the 8xxxx series. At least wait for the first refresh for the 8xxx. But I have no choice as I'll likely won't fly to the states again 'till xmas 07. And I do want to play the big titles for '07.

I honestly think Q1 2007 is going to be the big explosion in the PC gaming industry, probably what nVidia was expecting now (Q4). We'll have Vista at the end of Jan., and a whole bunch of next gen titles that were all delayed from this quarter, to early 2007.

With that said, I don't think demand has been totally horrible for the G80. As of now, it's filling the 1st (BGF 8800GTX), 2nd (eVGA 8800GTX), and 4th (XFX 8800GTX) spot on Tiger Direct's "Top Sellers," is no. 1 and 4 most popular on Pricegrabber, and seems to be advertised well on Newegg. So while demand might not be as high as expected (from consoles stealing the attention), I'd say it's doing quite well.

With all that said, I'm going to get one, when the price hits $200.

200 bucks will get you a severely used GTS near the end of it's life. So enjoy.

X1900Xt was around 5 or 6 hundred at launch, price is down around 250 now. In a couple more months I'll pick one up for 2 bills, and use the 400 I saved to buy drinks on the beach on my next trip to Maui.
I have no issue at all with people spending big money on computer parts, if it makes them happy, then God bless them and have a good time. Just don't expect it to matter to me. I don't care how many fps you get, nor will your 16xaa and af give me a chubby. I like value parts, 90% of the performance for half the price is what floats my boat.

Maybe. 7900GTX's have hit as low as $210 in the FS/FT forums already. If they do a refresh, I would expect to see that this crop of GTS could hit $200 sometime next year. Maybe not retail, but who knows. A year from now will bring Black Friday again

Obviously the new parts are for the mid-range segment...suitable for the masses.
The current nvidia flagship models are not power crazy and are amazing for price performance. You can't do premium sli for the same price. So i have to wonder over the motivation for people to perpetuate such misleading assertions. 1000w for an 8800gtx?? please! lol.

From forums like this one , tom's, |H|, xbit ...sales looked very good(of the 8800 series). SO i have to wonder at the claim that sales are poor. Are we comparing sales to the entire video market ...or to past flagship launches(more appropriate)?

Blame the lack of sales on the wii and PS3? over 100 mil PC users and you want o blame 275k Ebay PS3 scalpers and 600k Wii buyers? If anything these guys made enough of a profit to buy an 8800gts

---
For me, i want to buy an 8800gts and a 680i motherboard. The only thing stopping me is the markup over the suggested retail price now. When i can buy an 8800gts for 540$ cdn ,at a local store, and a 250$ evga MB --i will pounce. I don't mind paying for quality. But, then again..i don't like being gouged. I suspect many others feel the same way.

Plus, there is the uncertainty of the r600 launch window. If it really is january, then there is enough reason to wait a bit longer. But if that spanish site is right ...and the launch is q2 2007 ...there is no reason to wait. But, some people have done a nice job of clouding the launch time with "rumours".

---
bottom line: i suspect sales are no different than past launches. Perhaps expectations were a bit higher for this launch. I don't know until someone gives me a link to some hard sales data

yes, this site ... and haven't you noticed that many people tend to exaggerate ... even lie ... as they compete to get the most hurtful ''put down" [see above]

MANY of these 50K a year people are probably well over 100K in debt ... not counting their mortgage... if they lose their job or get very sick they are 3 months away from being homeless ...

With that ridiculous war that the US is waging, most of our productivity is being wasted on military ... our economy is sound but fragile ....

and maybe THAT's why people are choosing where to place their money ...

letsee $650 for a single GPU that will need an upgrade within 2 years or a whole gaming system - PS3 or [cheaper] Xbox360 - that will need an upgrade in 5 years

What I find ridiculous is that when it comes to the law, we are innocent until proven guilty, however, when it comes to credit we are guilty until proven innocent. No credit is just as bad as horrible credit and people get the short end of the stick.

I have a co-worker who is a very religious man. He was even a missionary in Thailand for eight years where he raised a family and then came back to the states. He has literally no credit whatsoever, and just the other day his cost for insurance increased drastically. When he asked what for, they told him it was because of his credit and that their new policy rewarded better credit. Apparently they followed some survey finding that displayed people with good credit filed for less claims, so they used that in their playbook.

Point is, they basically punished the man for never having to borrow money. They punished him for always being able to provide for himself and never owing debt to anyone.

With that ridiculous war that the US is waging, most of our productivity is being wasted on military ... our economy is sound but fragile ....
What's even more ridiculous is this country's dependency on imaginary money and credit. The country is literally trillions of dollars in debt. What does this mean? Everyone is basically working off of credit. What is my paycheck? We don't even have a trillion people. It's nuts...
and maybe THAT's why people are choosing where to place their [credit] ...
Fixed.

This is of course if the demand for the G80 is indeed low. We're going off the whim of one article.

IMO, PC gaming has always paled in comparison to the kind of sales consoles get. This was happening before the G80.

Not that launching the G80 when the PS3 and Wii debuted was a completely good idea, it will help them possibly have a more stable/popular card out to battle the R600. Besides, it was time for a new card. That deadline was way overdue.

PC Gaming has always been more expensive, but as said the core components of the PS3/Xbox 360/Wii CPU/GPU aren't upgradable while on the PC you can. Same tired old things the PC can do still much more then the consoles. Not to mention this time around the PC's are x86 compared to the PowerPC architecture of the consoles.

I dunno why people are bitching about the 599-649US MSRP of the 8800 GTX, I mean the 7800 GTX had an MSRP of 599US your not forced to buy it at these prices.

I also seriously doubt considering how expensive the 8800 line is that it will go for sale at retail at 200 USD, used perhaps but not new most likely in a year.

Given how long it takes Nvidia to launch something I expect the 8900 if they call it that, at the earliest of Mid Spring 2007, were talking like April May Time frame.

Though if Nvidia is launching the mainstream parts already in Q1 2007, I expect them to be 80nm node, which is allright, but that would still place the 8600 GT with a die size of 200mm2 or so. tolerable but more expensive then the prior generation of products.

Of course 8800 GTX is in low demand, its priced pretty high and there are no new compelling games to take advantage of all its power. Furthermore Vista and DX10 games are still not here yet so its pointless buying this card especially considering R600 will be released around the same time Vista/DX10 become available along with some new games. I passed up this card in favor of the XBox 360 and am glad I did because I get a lot more gaming time from it than I do my PC at the moment. I guess my sig turned out to be the popular opinion amongst gamers that have become jaded with paying for high end cards and not having any new games to utilize them--raising your AA/AF in existing games for a bigger e-penis gets old fast.
