GPUs are only useful for games and look at the gaming market. Sadly it's pretty weak compared to what it was. Nvidia is expecting everyone to shell out $500 for 2 games.
Considering the games, I sure as hell will!

Hardly surprising considering cpu's have met the same wall.
Who says anything about gpus reaching a wall? Considering gpus are still on 80/90nm they stilll have room to go to at least 32nm or maybe lower before things start to get challenging. If anything there haven't been enough games to push 8800GTX. 1 year into its life span almost and Bioshock isnt anywhere near stressing it. Remember when Doom 3 came out or Far Cry -- you could hardly run those games at 1600x1200 with AA/AF enabled with 1 top card then available.

What exactly is DisplayPort?

Still last time Nvidia said anything about G92, it was high end chip..Originally posted by: chiew

another source saying that G92 is midrange (replacing 8800gts) and G98 is lowrange (replacing 8500, 8600). looks like no 9xxx for now, its going to be named 8xxx because of little major updates.
go, price drops, go!
I'm betting that G92 is high end gpu. Why? Michael Hara, vice president of Nvidia has already said that G92 is successor to G80 and that it will deliver over 1 teraflops. I believe that guy more than anonymous rumours.Originally posted by: keysplayr2003
I'm willing to bet on the following:
G90 = high end (8900/9900 GTS/GTX)
G92 = Midrange (8650/8700/8750/9650/9750)
G98 = Value (8450/8550/9450/9550)
Still unclear if Nvidia will keep the 8 nomenclature or move to 9.
But history tells us the high end will be divisible by 10. NV30, NV40, G70, G80, G90.
And I think thats how it will remain. Reporting sites are just getting their information screwed up.
Or they are just changing their naming tactics? All we know now is that G92 is high end gpuOriginally posted by: keysplayr2003
NV42 = 6800 PCI-e
G72 = GeForce 7300
G82 = does not exist
So, it's anyone's guess. Looks like Nvidia is just skipping G90 and going right into what would be it's refresh?

I don't know where these few news sites are getting these "G92 is mid range chip"-news? Nvidia has clearly stated that G92 is successor to G80, and it has over two times more shader power.Originally posted by: keysplayr2003
No. We don't know that.
it is highly unlikely that Nvidia has no plans to offer a new top-of-the-range product this fall.
Another rumour that has no source..Originally posted by: n7
yet another report of the G92 being midrange :frown:

I will be royally annoyed if all we see is a mid-high end refresh in November.
I'm really hoping for a huge upgrade from this 8800 GTX, as it really can't handle newer titles @ 2048x1536+.

What exactly is DisplayPort?
AFAIK, DisplayPort is somewhat of a competitior to HDMI, except that HDMI is more media-center and TV-centered, while DisplayPort is more LCD-centered. No major differences in terms of features.

Should mean 812 or 813, 824 or 825, and 830 or 835 mhz, unless there is some tech definition of "/" that differs from the english one

And last of all, whats "taped out"
Taped out means that they have released a demo chip- a "prototype" if you will. The chips are designed by ATI and nVidia at their respective headquarters. Then, the chips are sent off to large-scale manufacturing centers (fabs) which produce the actual chip. The tape-outs are the very first chips that are fully functional, or nearly so. What remains from tape-out on is refining, enabling further feature sets, and streamlining the whole process to increase yeilds and decrease costs.
