You can't be serious ... within a year the midrange beats the ultra as the technology trickles down

i think you mean 'i wish that the high end was not priced so high.'
-i wish there were $10,000 video cards -- that were worth it

The point I'm trying to make is $500 on a video card is not worth it given the life cycle of these cards. From a personal standpoint anyway.

Back in the day, the top of the line cards barely came up to $400 and hovered around $350ish which is today's midrange prices. New cards didn't show up all that often either. Today it's like every 6 months your $500 card is slow. Slow is a relative term though and I'm not implying that the cards perform poorly just because they are no longer top of the line. I guess what I'm saying is, I would like to see prices not be so steep and the power requirements and heat to go down not up. It seems like video cards get bigger, take more power, and run hotter while CPUs get smaller, take less power and run cooler.

and CPUs pretty much stay the same ... heck, it is only now the dual core is useful in gaming and a CPU of 3 years ago can be paired with a high-end GPU of today with good results ... i think the GPU cycle gives you a lot more then CPU cycle ... especially if you are a gamer. And CPUs are only NOW getting smaller and cooler - as we move to more cores and more cache ... now game devs need to learn to use the CPU's growing power in gaming.

and i don't think anyone who bought a GTX or GTS last November will agree about the shortness of the cycle ... already they are itching for G92 and even more gaming performance for DX10.

and what i am trying to say i wish there was a GPU worth ten thousand dollars ... within a couple of years it'd be in the midrange

GPUs are only useful for games and look at the gaming market. Sadly it's pretty weak compared to what it was. Nvidia is expecting everyone to shell out $500 for 2 games.

GPUs are pretty useful for Vista

and the PC gaming market is on the rise .. sales are up .. a lot

i am looking forward to a lot more than 2 games

and i only expect to shell out another $300 for this year ... HD2900xt xfire should be a decent interim solution.

actually I was thinking that too. crossfire the 2900s if a single 2900 is not enough later.

anyway there's really 2 big games comming this year that I'll be playing. Bioshock and Crysis. This is assuming that UT2007 is a january release.

I hope the alt-tab and Unreal 2 stuttering issues will finally be fixed by the time the card arrives.

What are the rumoured specs/price of this card? I heard something along the lines of 2.5x an 8800GTX, but nothing about the price yet.

I'd assume in line with the 8800 series as far as pricing.

Negative.

Some of us run higher resolution displays...my 8800 GTX will get raped at 2560x1600...heh it already does in newer titles.

Oh, & for those guessing the prices on the 8800 GTX/GTS will down...i doubt it will come down too much.

As others mentioned, they'll likely phase the 8800s out pretty quickly, so when the new gen is out, there won't be much stock left.

That's what's happened with previous nV launches for as long as i've been following the GPU scene.

When was that, like 10 years ago? I remember the V2 running about 300-400 bucks when released in 1998. In 1998 350 bucks is probably worth 500 bucks now.

UT2007 now called UT3 is a november release - at least that's what's splashed all over the latest videos.

There is an article on the inquirer this morning saying that there are 'problems' with G92 and G98. What's G98? The new GTS?

. <--- thats my grain of salt.

pure speculation, just read it carefully

"Nvidia abruptly left the festivities after only a day, instead of the full two, some sources said this was because things were not going 'smoothly'."

I know that was so awesome, especially the leaf blower part towards the end.

What a great way to end the workday.

+1. The inq just pulls stories straight out of their asses and hopes they are right on mere chance, that way they can claim they have UBER LEET INSIDER EXCLUSIVE SOURCES OMG!!1

Remember when they claimed the new ATI card had finished production and would be on store shelves within the following weeks, according to their insider source, and then just a few days later ATI announced that the card was delayed and would not begin production until the next quarter? yeah.
