I'm trying to overclock my e8400 to about 4ghz, which I kind of understand how to do. What I don't understand is how my RAM comes into play. I've read OCing guides (and the FAQ) but I keep missing the important info, it doesn't sink in.

Here's my CPU-ID of my OC so far: http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=473775

Is my DRAM supposed to be at 400mhz?
Does everything look fine, am I on my way to 4ghz?

I'm stress testing 3.6ghz right now.

your running your ram at ddr2-800 right now which is what its rated at, but if you dont change the fsb:dram ratio and you just up the fsb to 445 then the ram will be running at ddr2-890, which it wont handle. change the fsb:dram ratio so that when you up the fsb to 445 the ram isn't going much over 400, or else increase the numbers for the timings (5-5-5-15 -> 7-5-5-18 for example) and increase the ram voltage to 2.1 or 2.2 or so. Probably best off just changing the ratio. I'd suggest increasing the voltages for the northbridge as well, 1.3v is safe for MCH, up the other 2 below it by 1 notch as well, and that should be fine for motherboard stability. Enable load line calibration too, and if its still not stable at 4ghz you probably need more volts on the core. gl

I'm running a Q9550 at 4.0 on that board; I think your RAM is going to have to be at 421 and 2.00B if I remember. It might be 2.00D but it's one or the other.

My mistake; 421 is for the 8500. 445 for your 8400.

How the hell do you overclock that? lol Googling*

EDIT:
Ah, so I use that to just give the RAM move juice (increase voltage)?

the northbridge controls front side bus, fsb, and as fsb increases so does ram speed and processor speed. fsb x multiplier = processor speed. you'll need more voltage to the northbridge to keep it stable at higher fsb.

Btw, the ram you linked is indeed 1066 but the cpuz link in original post says pc2-6400 which is ddr2-800. I'd maybe look at the ram stick or the packaging if u still have it.

Screenshot of CPU-Z has RAM at DDR2-800 because there is no JEDEC spec higher than that, so SPD reads as DR2-800. Open CPU-Z again and click on the SPD tab. You should see the JEDEC profile for the RAM plus the EPP (enhanced performance) profile for DDR2-1066.

Try taking a screenshot of you running prime. This will show us your temps, volts and settings. Open up all tabs of cpuz, and use a voltage monitoring program like Gigabytes own Eztune or Lavalyst Everest. Use the latest versions of realtemp and/or coretemp to monitor temperatures. When you get it all running, take a screenshot.

heres an example:

i would go for 425 fsb leaving all the electrical settings where there at. make sure the vcore is set on manual and not auto

BTRY, alright, should I just keep going and going (+25 FSB) until I don't pass ORTHOS for ~24 hours?

No, use OCCT, it's going to give you results alot faster; but yeah, go x 25 the first time and then creep it up to 450..., but do not go over 1.365vcore

ApacheChief,

You do have DDR2-1066 RAM. Notice the EPP#1 profile in your CPUZ screenshot. It says 533 mhz which is DDR2-1066. The JEDEC profiles are for DDR2- 533, 667 and 800. As the others have suggested, get your clock stable at 1:1, then work on the memory if you want. At 425 FSB you could use the 2.5 divider and run the memory at DDR2-1063. This will of course require more tweaking.

I'm at 1.38vcore right now, actually, is that a bit high? 12hrs OCCT cpu mode

RAM I haven't even tried to boost yet, but it's supposed to be pretty good, so I think I can get some pretty decent numbers out of it.

EDIT:
Also, it's at 31c (in a completely open case, though). I expect to see similar temps out of my Antec900, though.

Yeah, thats a bit high. I've managed to pull 4.025Ghz @ 1.26v but the cores run way too hot for my personal liking... am considering an 8600 to keep it on air... i don't think i want to do another water cooling setup; although its been fun but not with my PC A20 Lian Li

Nice! Looks like you have a better OC'er than I. I failed Prime 95 within 5 min @ 1.26v 4.050Ghz/2.1v stnd 4.4.4.12 900Mhz/LLC enabled/NB @ 1.30v so, looks like its back to the drawing board.

Good Luck!

I immediately crashed as soon as I tried OCCT until I raised the voltage, try to bump it up

EDIT:
Not that I know what I'm talking about--but, that's what I did to get where I got.
