Last I checked, a while back, I had normal CPU and system temperatures.

Lately my computer has been freezing up for no apparent reason -- after a moment or two it would work again, but then freeze up again a moment later.

I finally thought to check the CPU temp... in the BIOS it said 107 degrees Celsius... the hardware monitor software that came with my motherboard says 117C. CPU fan is running at about 3600RPM (I don't remember what's normal for this unit or even if I'm running with the stock HSF -- it's been a while since I built this thing). Case temp is 28C, normal.

I didn't think a computer could even run with temps like that. I'm not getting spontaneous reboots or shutdowns, just freeze-ups. (And a DVD burn failed twice tonight, which was unusual.) I turned it off, let it sit for 5 min, came back and the BIOS still reported the same temperature, which I thought was strange - wouldn't it have cooled down??

Can anyone tell me, (1) are these numbers for real?! ... (2) if the CPU fan is not failing, what could cause this kind of overheating?

I doubt those numbers are real unless the CPU heatsink has fallen off and is sitting at the bottom of your case?

HOOOLLLAAYYY CRAP!!!! IT SAY 107C IN THE BIOS?!?!?!?!?!?! DO NOT USE YOUR COMPUTER AT THEESE TEMPS!!! RESEAT YOUR HSF OR BUY A NEW ONE RIGHT AWAY!!!!

you do know 100c is boiling point? Just put on a pan on water on top of your cpu and it will boil then make some mac and cheese. YUMMY!

Haha. Like Bobthelost said, it's more likely a reading error than anything else.

HAHAHAHAHA....LMAO.....u guys made my day. but on the real side........try to feel the heatsink and youll see if its for real.
EDIT: on the other thought......99.99999999999999999999999999% your cpu would fly out of your pc if it was 107 or 117.

It appears the case fan has failed... but surely that wouldn't make THIS big a difference...

What would cause a machine to suddenly misread the CPU temp, when it used to read it correctly? Some panicked research tells me Athlons are supposed to shut themselves down at 70C, so I don't know what to make of this 107-117C thing....

I checked, and I do have the retail chip with stock HSF... still under warranty, so that's a plus, I guess...

The thing that gets me is, ok, if the temp readings are bogus, what's causing the random freeze-ups?

It's probably 117F. If you have temperature sensors on your motherboard, the Fahrenheit and Celcius ones musta gotten switched. You're fine. Just reseat your HSF and you should get your system stable again.

Please stop freaking out, guys. It's definately not showing Anandtech forum members in a good light.

in some bios options you have to tell the board to throttle down or shutdown when the temps reach a certain temp. 107C does seem a little excessive though, but without the fan moving out the hot air, i can see it getting unstable.

what cpu are you running?

The BIOS said 107C / 224F ... (or thereabouts) If it had switched celsius/fahrenheit I would think the other number would be a lot lower...

This is an Athlon64 3000+ ... socket 754... afraid that's all I remember about it (not which core, etc). Bought it in Feb 2005.

Can you touch the heatsink while it's running without burning yourself? If so it's not more than 40 C or so.

OK... I just touched the heatsink. The side by the clip and the "fins" (?) feel like basically room temperature.

Maybe I should uninstall the software that I previously suspected of causing the freeze-ups, if this isn't really an overheating problem... but I still wish I knew what would cause it to suddenly read my CPU temp as 107-117C...

I would completely take off/clean/reinstall HSF - see what kind of contact it was making
Doesnt the soc 754 stock HS have a protective plastic shim on bottom that has to be removed? Cant quite remember.
In any case remove all with isoprop alch 99% and use artic silver 5 - extremely thin.
The CPU can be real hot, but HS only warm if cocked.
Did you bump the extra square +12V CPU power plug in?

Edit:
Try Speedfan temp monitor

It is possible those temps are accurate. I was running with one of my engineering samples, thought it was giving false readings when it said 120C in windows. Went to touch the heatsink, and it was cool to the touch..but the capacitors and everything around it were scolding hot. Turned out my heatsink was leaning on a capacitor and not making contact. Normal a P4 would shut down before those temps were reached, but the feature was likely disabled since it was an engineering sample...

Long story short, don't run it again till you re-seat your heatsink, and put on a fresh coat of thermal paste, not worth risking damage.

Downloaded Speedfan, it agrees with the temp readings in my motherboard monitoring software...

Here's a new problem.

I took off the heatsink/fan and CPU... Wiped off the old thermal paste with some alcohol. Applied a thin layer of Arctic Silver to the CPU with a baggie-covered finger. Reinstalled the CPU, then installed and locked down the HSF.

Now when I try to start my machine, I get these long, repeating beeps, with nothing on the screen (at least, not in the 3-4 seconds before I get unnerved by the beeps and shut if off). A little red LED goes on on my motherboard. There is nothing in the motherboard manufacturer's manual explaining what the little red light means.

Going to take out the CPU/HSF fan again and also reseat the RAM for good measure. If anyone has any other ideas, I could use all the help I can get at the moment...

Aha. Reseated the CPU, heatsink/fan, and memory. Now it boots and the CPU temperature displayed in BIOS is 20C. So other than needing to replace my case fan, it looks like things are OK.
