Last I checked, a while back, I had normal CPU and system temperatures.
Lately my computer has been freezing up for no apparent reason -- after a moment or two it would work again, but then freeze up again a moment later.
I finally thought to check the CPU temp... in the BIOS it said 107 degrees Celsius... the hardware monitor software that came with my motherboard says 117C. CPU fan is running at about 3600RPM (I don't remember what's normal for this unit or even if I'm running with the stock HSF -- it's been a while since I built this thing). Case temp is 28C, normal.
I didn't think a computer could even run with temps like that. I'm not getting spontaneous reboots or shutdowns, just freeze-ups. (And a DVD burn failed twice tonight, which was unusual.) I turned it off, let it sit for 5 min, came back and the BIOS still reported the same temperature, which I thought was strange - wouldn't it have cooled down??
Can anyone tell me, (1) are these numbers for real?! ... (2) if the CPU fan is not failing, what could cause this kind of overheating?
