Microsoft noted that their ongoing work with software makers has drastically reduced the amount of UAC prompts being caused by third-party software trying to do stuff that it really shouldn't be.

One of the problems for me right now is applications that install license servers. These either require you to go through the UAC prompts, which I don't mind so much, while others require UAC be disabled completely. If you don't then the applications appear to install fine, but don't work or refuse to register with the license servers.

This isn't really vistas fault but it is still an annoyance for the end user.

I've had Vista64 for about 3 weeks now and it's been nothing but good vibrations. No driver issues at all. I made sure all my hardware had Vista64 drivers BEFORE I installed it. I had to buy a new wireless nic cus my old one was crappy as hell. It's much faster than XP and looks better too. It hasn't crashed on me once. Maybe Vista64 was bad in the beginning but it's great now.

I wish I would have been as lucky as you guys. I tried Vista as an upgrade from windows 2000 and it wasn't pretty. I ran into the situation where it wouldn't accept the manufacturer's drivers during the "f6" part for my SATA controller. When I tried to upgrade instead of a fresh install (using the upgrade disk), I finally got everything running only for it to fail WGA, despite having legit copies of 2000 and the upgrade disk (purchased from my university bookstore). An install of OpenSuSE 11.1 would go just perfect as I've verified that it will autodetect all the drivers (even for my wireless card). However, I remain on windows 2000 simply because I don't want to go through the trouble of having to reload all my "stash" of goodies on my hard drive. Don't get me wrong...when Vista is up and running properly, it can be a good thing. However, getting there can be a pain in the ass if your pc is built out of spare parts...

Huh? There is no "F6 part" when installing Vista. The installer is all GUI based, and can read SATA drivers from USB and other drives. I'm not sure what you were doing or where you'd be doing it, such that you'd ever need to hit F6.

I think Modelworks uses beta drivers quite a bit so this issue is a point of contention for him.

(I would tire of hitting F8 every time I boot too.)

Modelworks needs to use a program called ReadyDriver Plus 1.1 which will auto-boot F8 - Allow Unsigned driver option everytime you boot automatically.

And click Yes, continue to install driver. That's a tough one.

Yeah, try that in x64.
Vista is dead as soon as windows 7 hits the shelf, where they thankfully addressed the issue.

heh?

Everytime i install something unsigned, i get a red box screaming i'll die & go to hell if i install it, so i click yes, & it installs just fine (in x64).

Wtf are you talking about?

I read a lot of people talking about UAC feature many times but I never thought one thing that bothers me is when I uninstall application or run ccleaner or diskeeper the UAC flashed or blink with black screen and caused some icons messed up is this normal for UAC to flash/blink black screen back and forth?

I installed Vista Ultimate 32 bit this past July. The only real problems I had were my Soundblaster Live! sound card wouldn't work no matter what drivers I tried, and several of my older programs and games either won't work, or won't even install into Vista.
It seems bit quicker than XP Pro, I like the assorted eye candy and some of the different layouts, and even Microsoft Office 2007 seems to
work better with Vista than with XP Pro.

I AM considering going back to XP though. There are just too many things that don't work right with Vista for me. I'm NOT gonna spend the $$$ I'd need to in order to upgrade all my hardware, (still running a P4/skt 478 and AGP video card)

IF I wanted to set up a dual boot system with XP and Vista...how would I go about doing that?

I presume it'd take a complete reformat and reinstall of Vista then XP? (or reformat, install XP then Vista?)

Can't tell ya off the top of my head...(I'm OLD ya know!) but several of the OEM stuff that came with DVD/RW, much to my surprise, Far Cry won't even install, (it SHOULD, but I get the BSOD every time...and it worked fine in XP) Peachtree 2006 won't install in Vista at all. (known incompatibility issue) EVERYTHING that came with my ASUS P4P-800E mobo, and a couple of other odds and ends type of stuff.

What's the benefit of dual boot anyway? XP does almost everything that Vista does, does SOME of it better...or faster, but maybe isn't quite as secure and doesn't have the eye candy. I don't think my video card (Visiontek XT850-PE-AGP) needs DirectX10...nor do any of my games at this time.

Far Cry works fine with Vista, did you remember to install DX9.0c in Vista?(it updates the DX9 part, you'll still have DX10)..some older games need DX9.0c Nov 2008 DX9.0c ,remember its for Vista as well as XP.

OEM software depends what it is,normally you can find a free alternative that works with Vista or updated version.

Good point...I had forgotten about DX 9.0c...and DX Diag shows I have DX 10...

Installing now.

I've done some of the freeware alternatives to stuff. Some are good, some aren't so good, but there's no workaround for PeachTree...except to buy a newer version. (No, Microsoft Office Accounting Express won't do it)

Hehe well I only use OpenOffice so don't have that problem .

Old games wise some also need to be run as admin and XP compatibility mode (in the compatibility tab) from the exe of the game in question.

I just built a new system today for a family member using Vista HP 32.

Took a total of maybe 15 minutes. I think I clicked the mouse maybe 3 or 4 times throughout the whole thing.
Once to verify which HDD to install to, once to enter the key, and again to select a time zone and the avatar for the desktop.

Beautiful.

I'm a Bookkeeping and Accounting major, and unfortunately,Peachtree is a required part of the curriculum. I have PT 2008 running in a limited fashion on my vista rig, but PT 2006 is the actual program assigned. (2008 will work for me...but it takes a lot of extra work)

Don't get me wrong...I LIKE Vista. It seems like almost as big of an improvement over XP Pro as XP was over win98...well, almost... There are just so dammed many incompatibilities...

Well if you have old hardware or software then yea probably incombatibilities but every new OS calls for new/better hardware.

as long as you dont have any webdav apps or have to use a webserver that requires frontpage extensions, VISTA FTW!!!!!!!!!

as far as UAC is concerned. it screws up some scripting apps that i use for warcraft3, and it takes longer for me to run an exe file - i.e. in windows explorer, i click on a setup.exe, it waits 2-3 seconds, then uac window pops up. with uac disabled, i don't get that 2-3 second lag. pretty annoying imo especially if you're installing a bunch of apps. disabled uac and no problems since.
