Hi,

I would like to receive some opinions about the following graphic card:

Gainward Ultra/700-8X XP GS GeForce4 TI4200 128Mb

The price is about 274 ? (about the same in USD)

I would like to receive some opinions on the price/performance, but mainly the quality of the card (speed + manufacturer + drivers).

Thanks

Gainward are one of the top brands for Nvidia products also it`s a golden sample version so should overclock well, image quality with Gainward cards in general is very good,as for drivers well most people just use the Nvidia reference drivers from Nvidia.com(including myself).I`ve yet to have any problems with Nvidia drivers and I do game a lot.No drivers are perfect for everyone, but Nvidia drivers come close in general.

sanchny: Do you know if that problem applies to the new AGP 8x card I listed? Or only on AMD motherboards?

That seems kind of very important material ...

Thanks

600 posts later, they haven't pinned it down to a specific OS, motherboard, hardware configuration, or version of the card.

But the problem should be non existent on the 4400 and 4600 cards, right?

I know I should find more info on the link supplied, but I haven't had enough time now to read all posts and explore sub-links, so I thank you for your quick feed-me-with-info ...

Thanks

yeah, those should be safe.
What about the card: MSI GeForce4 TI4200 128DDR TV-Out
That should be ok as well.

Some problems probably came up with 4400s, 4600s, and different models of the 4200s, but they're nowhere near as widespread as the Gainward 4200s. Sometimes other manufacturers besides Gainward and other models besides the 4200 might have bad cards, but that's to be expected- nothing major. The rate of failure on the Gainward 4200 is very big, though, so stay away from it.

The Gainward problem is blown out of proportion IMHO,most of the problems was with the 64mb version of the older GF4 ti4200 cards, the 128mb and especially the newer AGP 8x versions should have no problems,Gainward can`t afford to have a high defective return rate, and yes I know some people that have the Gainward GF4s which are working fine .

If you`re that worried about Gainward then the Leadtek GF4 Ti4200 is a very fine choice as well.

True, not all Gainward 4200s are bad cards (though one guy walked into a store he used to work at, borrowed the 26 Gainward 4200s they had in stock, and they all crashed.) The problem is, people have been RMAing to Gainward, who have kept sending out bad cards. Some people have already RMAed 3 times without getting a working card yet.
Why support a company with customer service like that?

True they may not ALL be bad cards, but why bother to take that chance when there are so many other options available. It's not like Gainward has cornered the market on OC'able cards. Hell, my leadtek Ti4400 is @ 300/600 24/7/365 and isn't even breaking a sweat!

Save yourself the possible headache and get a diferent manufacturers Ti4200.

Ok you guys are scaring me now...I just got a Gainward Ultra 650 XP GF4 Ti4200 128 MB and installed it yesterday......... not a single problem so far. I haven't tried to see how far I can overclock it, but it has been very stable thus far with the small amount that I did. And I got mine for around $180 after tax and shipping, so it seemed like a good deal at the time. I guess I'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Any manufacture can have a bad series of parts. After all, they buy them from someone else anyway. It also could be of poor design where the cap is underrated for the circuit, but in this case I would say they were bad caps!

It's what the manufacture does about it to remedy the problem. There is where the real problem/solution lies and it doesn't look like Gainwald is coming through.

I doubt you have a bad card. I originally purchased my Gainward 128mb Ti4200 from Newegg in August. I got the "white checkerboard" effect in a particular game, but I didn't realize it was a hardware problem until the day before Christmas. I saw the problems with Gainward RMAs, so I decided to try to get a RMA through Newegg. To my susprise, they gave me a RMA with no problems.

Two weeks later, I got my brand new Gainward Ultra/650-8X TV and its ran just fine. I did noticed there was a much bigger GPU fan and now there are memory heatsinks.

I have bought a gainward gf4 ti4200 in late July of 2002 and have already RMA'ed it once and now I have to RMA yet AGAIN. Purple checkerboard screen + hard lockup is not fun. I'm not sure if I want to RMA back to Gainward (heard lots of people with bad ones although now it seems to be better) or to newegg. I'm hoping that newegg will send me a different company card or even offer me the choice of paying a little more and getting a better one (probably not gainward).

Are most of these RMAs coming from googlegear? Or just everywhere?

I'm looking into getting one very soon. My Abit Ti4200 128mb NON OTES just isn't cutting it. 285 core / 490 mem stable. Kind of weak, don't you think?
