Galaxy Nexus --> S4 or wait for S5

GF on Verizon has a Galaxy Nexus that she is still OK with despite the horrible battery life and some iffy texting issues. She is due for an upgrade (she used to be on the grandfathered unlimited plan until her parent's walked into a store and changed everything to a family plan because they didn't know wtf they were doing ).

Anyway, S4 now for 50 bucks or wait X months for the S5 to come out ( + probably at $299?) Any chance this thing actually comes out in Feb/March? I haven't even see any real details yet...

Rumors are midmarch to summer. I'm kind of in the same boat because I really want a new phone BAD....Samsung Nexus is not cutting it anymore.

However, any upgrade right now would be a huge improve for your gf so I don't think it'll even matter right now.

The S4 is a massive upgrade over the Galaxy Nexus, so for $50 she'll be pretty happy. Another option is the LG G2, which is also $50, and has a faster CPU than the S4 so a little more future proof.

I'm in the exact same boat right now. My galaxy nexus is getting very frustrating, but I'm trying to hold out for a S5 or something else impressive over the next 6 months. What I really want to hold out for is another Nexus device on Verizon, but I have a feeling that isn't going to happen this year. I just want to run stock Android...no TouchWiz or other manufacturer UIs.

Samsung's release dates tend to vary, but most likely you'll see the announcement in March or so. That said... don't hold your breath for Verizon. It wasn't super-quick on the draw with the GS4.

I'd be tempted to get a Moto X for the same price, quite frankly. Unless your girlfriend really needs a 1080p screen, it'd be the nicer experience -- you can get it through Moto Maker at that price, and you're more likely to get timely OS updates. Samsung will likely push out a KitKat update for the GS4, but history suggests it will abandon the phone shortly afterward.

If you're interested in flashing, buy a MDK S4 off of Swappa. If not, the S4, X, or G2 are fine. But doesn't she want a Note 3? That won't be replaced soon, and is by far the best device for purse-carriers.

Problems with the S5:
(1) won't be announced until March (same as last year), which almost certainly means late-May release on VZ like last year
(2) bootloader will be totally locked on VZ/AT&T
(3) only incremental improvements over the S4

You could sell the Nexus for ~$50, buy a Moto G for ~$100, and save the upgrade for when the S5 comes out.

No you can't. The G doesn't work on postpaid for six months, and losing LTE misses the whole point.

Doh forgot about that.

Then go with Poofyhairguy's advice. Use upgrade on iPhone and sell that and get what you want.

I don't see a point in using your upgrade to get a phone to sell to just then turn around and buy a different phone. And you don't have to worry about keeping unlimited, so you should feel free to use the upgrade since you're paying for it with the plan amount anyways.

If she's still fine with a GNex, then any of the top phones on VZW will be a massive upgrade and work great for the next two years. The LG G2, SGS4, Note 3 or HTC One are all great choices. If the MotoX is free, I'd consider it. If it's $50, then go with another phone.

I have a feeling that's not going to happen for SEVERAL years. Not after the way the fumbled the Galaxy Nexus and after last years debacle with the Nexus 7 LTE. I wouldn't be holding my breath for a Nexus device on Verizon for a while.

MotoX would definitely be the closest.

Get a note 3 if you can get it cheap some where. I'm still using my note 2 and I have no itch to upgrade at all. I had a nexus before and that phone had so many issues so I feel her pain.

Don't forget the $30 upgrade fee on VZW. Or is there a way around that?

It's really just a matter of how long you can hold out. If you've waited this long, it might not be a stretch to hold out for an S5. Speculation is a release in April at least for AT&T.

But if you can't there are a lot of options already mentioned. Note 3, or S4, HTC one...

Get the G2... battery live, S800, newest phone.
The S4 she gets will be locked down (bootloader), unless she's OK with that.
Try all of the phones in-store first though.

Disclaimer: Never used a G2 only reviews, own an S4 (GPe rom).

Just traded a guy for a Moto X, it has some interesting software, but I'd take a pass on it.

says the guy that's never used one

Oh, sorry. You're right. I should make my buying decisions based on what someone on an internet forum tells me to do. Give me a F'n break. There are plenty of products I've never used that I don't purchase based on specs, reviews, and comparisons to other products available.

You own a MotoX and you're happy with it? Good for you. It's not the phone for me right now. Move along.

His point is that you are giving advice to someone after not using the product. Nobody gives crap if you ignore a product. That's just ignorance, doesn't bother anyone but yourself. But when you give advice, it makes you look sucky.

I didn't give a single piece of advice to anyone in this thread. Read my posts. I was talking about my situation. Reading comprehension.
