I'd bet they blamed the Korean battery supplier, shipped replacement models with the Chinese sourced batteries, and there's still the underlying design/engineering problem. Since they told the Chinese consumers to pound sand since they got the units with Chinese sourced batteries, they're reluctant to admit what they did.
Yea, just divert all Chinese-bound Note 7s to everywhere else and called it "fixed" when there's an inherent engineering problem. Anywho, I'd be lying if I said I want to see this soap opera ends so let's see what the next chapter entails. Class action perhaps?

I don't think there will be a class action suit as at this point they'd almost need to do a total recall

Production halted. The saga continues.

Not only a total one, but also will be deemed involuntary by authorities regardless of whether the users want to keep the phones.

It will be doubly funny and ironic if the fiasco end ups forcing user removable batteries on all phones in the future as a safety regulation.

It's also funny in a superstitious way because Samsung didn't want to be one down from Apple so they decided to skip the 6 and called it the note 7 (or as Samsung explained, so that their flagship models would have the same number for that calendar year). So this could be the ghost of the note 6 seeking vengeance for killing it before it even had a chance.

Though Huawei got them beat with the mate 8 and honor 8...

And, of course, Oppo with their R9s..

It just keeps getting worse. I'm sure Samsung's biggest worry is that a "temporary" halt to production means months, or that it ends up being permanent. That'd be a blow to its reputation that it wouldn't recover from for a while.

I'll take full responsibility for the curse on the Note 7.

At some point in the past I may have said, "It'll be a cold day in hell before I think about buying a Samsung product." Sure enough, the Note 7 is announced and I'm looking at the Note 7 like [insert Obama "not bad" meme here]. Clearly, thanks to the laws of thermodynamics, all that heat was transferred into the Note 7 battery manufacturing process.

I apologize profusely.

The Note 7 has been the most entertaining phone ever, I can only dream of what Samsung can do to top it.

Hah, just wait till you see next recall/refund drama for the Note 7s that are under contracts. It will be a joy to behold.

You just know it's going to announce the Galaxy S8 with dual cameras and no headphone jack, and then say with a straight face that it's a master of innovation.

I wonder how much free stuff I can get out of samsung if they do another recall. I already got a gear fit 2 and a gear VR out of this. Maybe now I should ask for a 256gb sd card?

It really is a shame, they finally knocked it out of the park with the design and features. There really isn't anything on the market like it yet.

Along with the above would be a second recall. I'm sure it's happened before, but I can't think of anytime the news has been this big.

I generally agree -- the Note 7 is well-done... except for that battery flaw. Unfortunately, that's the kind of flaw that ruins everything.

Samsung own 5% of Wacom, guess that's why they have S-Pen stylus technology that no other smartphones have.

No wonder wacom wouldnt make a favorable deal with hauwei. If anyone could make a Note challenger, it's hauwei.

If the Note exits the smartphone race... backward and boring pretty much wins by default. Since most of the other makes are getting away with that as far as anything that actually passes for design strength and/or innovation.

I think unless they make a genuine change to it, the Note 7 is done, but I can't imagine Samsung will abandon what they've put together for features on it. Maybe a rebranding, like a Galaxy 8 Pro or Plus instead of "Note" but you never know, they may hang in there with the name.

I'd sure bet money their next few models won't have a runaway battery problem outside of massive physical damage.

Is it a battery flaw, or is it something deeper?
If it is a battery flaw, that could be fixed, if something deeper, then they are in a pickle.

To me, "battery flaw" is an all-encompassing term that could include anything from the battery itself to the housing to the firmware. Some of those are relatively easy fixes; others require substantive redesigns that might be impractical.

Note line has always been garbage as far as quality control issues.

I said it in many other threads, the note 4 was one of my favorite phones till one day the emmc on the phone failed. I had a $400 brick at that point which i was able to sell for parts on ebay.

Nah, Samsung got complacent and develope a tunnel vision by trying to beat Apple. They constantly try to get their devices out in front of the next iphone and pretty much emulate design for design and im sure along the way forgot to do some due diligence and indepth testing of their devices before releasing to the public. As a previous owner of the Note 2 and the Note 4, those were the golden days of Samsung when they really dont give a fk about other mfgrs and really focus on their products. Now, they can't even design a fricken s-pen correctly without it getting stuck inside the slot, let alone preventing exploding phones.

Eh, that's all a bit simplistic. I know the folklore is that Samsung just copies Apple... that case might have been made in the galaxy S2 days.

But since then, apple hasn't actually been in the same product universe as Sammy. The Note itself is something Apple would never have done on it's own... a wacom enabled phablet ... please.

Apple's own plus phones are a me-too answer to what Samsung and others pioneered- and as I've read reviewers with a strong design background point out, apples larger devices are only that ... larger devices. There's not a single feature (like the s-pen for example) that makes them need to be larger other than "hey, we make a bigger phone too!"

The note 7 may be a fiasco ... but at least Samsung has pushed the envelope through 6 iterations of the device (as a sideline to their main Galaxy phones) to have evolved the note 7 into an incredible design packed with way more features and innovation, and more forward thinking design than the iPhone 6S pt 2... oh sorry... the 7.

Looks like they made a pretty big blunder, but at least it was in the course of pushing forward, not being Mr Play It Safe like the fruit company.

But once more ... maybe im being unfair in my assessment that Apple's not actually even in the same league as Samsung. I guess I'll have to check out all the stuff they try before I make such a judgement huh? Like that Apple VR... Apple 360... a couple generations of Apple edge screens, their pen enabled phones, their ruggidized phones, their awesome wireless charging integration, their multiple generations of smart watches that came out years before others...

...oh wait, hey there's that svelt new battery case for the iPhone 7... what do they call that? The iPregnant ? Innovative!
