Eh, that's all a bit simplistic. I know the folklore is that Samsung just copies Apple... that case might have been made in the galaxy S2 days.

But since then, apple hasn't actually been in the same product universe as Sammy. The Note itself is something Apple would never have done on it's own... a wacom enabled phablet ... please.

Apple's own plus phones are a me-too answer to what Samsung and others pioneered- and as I've read reviewers with a strong design background point out, apples larger devices are only that ... larger devices. There's not a single feature (like the s-pen for example) that makes them need to be larger other than "hey, we make a bigger phone too!"

The note 7 may be a fiasco ... but at least Samsung has pushed the envelope through 6 iterations of the device (as a sideline to their main Galaxy phones) to have evolved the note 7 into an incredible design packed with way more features and innovation, and more forward thinking design than the iPhone 6S pt 2... oh sorry... the 7.

Looks like they made a pretty big blunder, but at least it was in the course of pushing forward, not being Mr Play It Safe like the fruit company.

But once more ... maybe im being unfair in my assessment that Apple's not actually even in the same league as Samsung. I guess I'll have to check out all the stuff they try before I make such a judgement huh? Like that Apple VR... Apple 360... a couple generations of Apple edge screens, their pen enabled phones, their ruggidized phones, their awesome wireless charging integration, their multiple generations of smart watches that came out years before others...

...oh wait, hey there's that svelt new battery case for the iPhone 7... what do they call that? The iPregnant ? Innovative!

Sheesh, so much sarcastic anger - someone need a hug?

Might want to seek a doctor to check on your sodium level because you're being extra salty right now lol

Relax, i love both companies as I have both products, but lets not be close-minded as to think Samsung is some innovator here. I noticed how you didnt mention anything about glass back screen, metal/glass encasing, thin design, sealed battery, fixed storage, etc that Samsung "borrowed" and tested on a few of their products. But it's cool, some people tend to overlook the blatant obvious reasons in order to make their point. I got you.

Regardless of what Samsung, Apple, or anyone else does, execution is 100% key. You can release a bunch of half-assed products but unless they're refined, you're not going to get a dime from me.

Is there any evidence the Note 7 is some special design that's different from all other smartphones with lithium batteries? If so, what is the evidence? I'm sure someone has done a teardown- did they find a little ticking countdown clock inside, strapped to tiny sticks of red TNT?

We know the reason for the original Note 7 fires- defective batteries. Not magic elves, tiny ticking bombs inside, or some radical design that's completely different from all other smartphones.

I can see the general public being complete morons, but tech-minded people should know better.

I think right in this very thread, someone posted an article about an exploding iPhone 7. You can find examples probably of every smartphone model there is catching fire. The N7 is under the microscope though, and any instance of it is going to be much more widely scrutinized.

Unless there's some evidence that says the current Note 7 has some battery flaw- there's really nothing more than people being idiots to believe there's any real problem with the Note 7 itself, as though it strays from all known smartphone design currently. I would think most tech-minded people are smart enough to realize most things happen for a REASON, not "just because!"

There was an actual REASON for the original Note 7 problem. Unless there's one identified for the replacements, then to fear your N7 blowing up, simply because it's a Note 7- with no evidence that it's a widespread problem, one just has to be a bit simple minded.

Maybe, just maybe Zaap goes off without thinking

What are you getting for a replacement Zaap?

And that's the game, no more sales or exchanges worldwide of all current Note 7's, straight from the horse's mouth.

They're asking everyone to return for a refund or exchange for a different phone.

https://news.samsung.com/global/sam...note7-while-further-investigation-takes-place

We are working with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to investigate the recently reported cases involving the Galaxy Note7. Because consumers' safety remains our top priority, Samsung will ask all carrier and retail partners globally to stop sales and exchanges of the Galaxy Note7 while the investigation is taking place.

We remain committed to working diligently with the CPSC, carriers and our retail partners to take all necessary steps to resolve the situation. Consumers with an original Galaxy Note7 or replacement Galaxy Note7 should power down and take advantage of the remedies available, including a refund at their place of purchase. For more information, consumers should visit samsung.com/us/note7recall or contact 1-844-365-6197.

You realize the iPad Pro's are stylus enabled and work well-I have one and a stylus.
Yeah I forgot the iPad Pro was a smartphone. Kinda like how you must have forgotten Samsung did pen enabled tablets long before Apple, and a 12" Pro tablet. Who copies who again?

I've probably been the biggest critic of most of that. I've said from the start they should have never messed with the Note line the way they did, and that thinness for the sake of thinness is 100% useless, even a detriment to smartphone design.

None of that changes the fact that Samsung is way more innovative than Apple.

I'm keeping mine as long as I can. There's nothing else even comes close to the Note that's new.

Really about the only currently existing alternative would just be going back to a Note 4. (The Note 5 sucked and even Samsung backtracked on the SD storage).

Zaap, I've had a Note 1,2,3 & 4, and 2 Note tablets, not sure why you're so riled up.

Take a breath and relax, we're all enthusiasts here.

Initially, SS was a "fast follower" but as I've said multiple times in this thread, the Note 7 is a compelling device, Samsung does some cool stuff. I primarily go with Apple stuff now because my better half can screw up an Android phone in about a week, just got tired of cleaning up her phones. I do have a OnePlus 3 coming this month, and I use an LG Urbane with my Android stuff (currently have it paired with an iPhone, it's not terribly functional like that, but the new Apple Watch OS isn't any better), I jump between OS's pretty often. Heck, I have a 7 Plus unopened laying around somewhere.

I'd go with a V20, or just chill till the next Samsung phone with a stylus comes out, it'll be bulletproof.

Definitely turn in your Note 7, I have an orphaned BB PlayBook that pisses me off every time I look at it, need to take it out to the range for target practice. Orphaned devices suck, especially with a locked bootloader, the locked down Android stuff is another reason I've drifted from Android.

If true, this is very poor by Samsung. The initial recall...that can happen. I can understand. But to release a "fixed" phone that is not even fixed is unforgivable.

Just pull the phone from sale, count your losses and rebrand the Note to something like the Stylus or Galaxy Pro and release it next year.

Nowhere in their press release mentions a refund, which is really rich after pulling all the shit at their users. Like anybody with a Note 7 is so just going to settle for a S7 or a Note 5.

Stay classy Scumsung.

Well, the carriers all had different purchase plans, at nearly $1000, many had to have been financed, makes a blanket statement difficult. But yeah, lawyer speak, and they didn't call it a "recall" to avoid more legal headaches.

The CPSC needs to be held accountable too, they punted the first recall with evidently Samsung supplied tainted data.

Well, that's unfortunate. I love my Note 7. It's everything I wanted from a phone. But, Samsung halting all production, everybody halting all sales, pretty damning.

I'm out, I guess. Swapped mine for an S7 Edge (gotta have my Samsung Pay and GearVR). I'm already missing some of the software features and definitely my S-Pen, but the S7E seems to be a touch snappier. Will miss the beautiful blue color most of all.

Man, Best Buy was clueless about the whole thing going on and exchanging. I went in and said I'm returning my Note 7, and want to exchange it because of the new recall and they looked at me like I was an alien or something. Luckily the guy that worked at the Samsung display was over there and said all they know is some statement (secretly show the BB employee), then the BB employees took a good 20 minutes trying to figure out what to do.
Exchanged for a S7Edge. Immediately noticed some of the UI refinements in Grace UX on the Note 7. I really hope they push Grace to the S7 and S7Edge soon. I don't like the slope of the curve as much either. My hands keep hitting icons and launching them. I think when I get my case on Wednesday that should fix it though.
Got a free 32" LED Samsung Smart TV (720p) also. Now I have 2 since my son upgraded his LG G3 to a S7Edge on Friday. Great for bedrooms.

LOL, remember when 32" LCD's cost $2K each?

According to WSJ, the Note 7 is officially dead.

"Samsung said in a filing with South Korean regulators that it would permanently cease sales of the device, a day after it announced a temporary halt to production of the smartphones."

The way I see it...sometimes the safest place to stand is where lightning has already struck. What are the chances of replacement note 7's exploding? If tthey're even halfway smart, Samsung and partners are making DAMN sure the posibility is remote. (If not, they'd be complete morons).

I guess they got Zaapped twice by that lightning

You know, when I started this thread I never would have suspected that the Note 7 would be forced off the market within a couple of months and serve as a stain on Samsung's reputation.

The fallout from this is likely going to last for months to come. Lawsuits, forced executive resignations, design rethinks for the S8 / Note 8... and of course, a serious hit to Samsung's bottom line. The Note 7 was supposed to represent Samsung's big holiday boost. On top of losing that money, it has to worry that some of those customers will return their phones and walk out with a competitor's device. Apple must be grinning ear-to-ear today.

Honestly, I think that's really foolish. Get that fire hazard out of your house asap.

BTW, report out of china:

Samsung recalls 191,000 Note 7 smart phones in China, puts Hong Kong users on hold

As many as 20 cases of Galaxy Note 7 batteries overheating or catching fire have been reported in China, the inspection administration said. The company will replace the faulty model with other Samsung brand phones, reimburse buyers with any price difference and present them with a 300 yuan (US$45) gift voucher each, according to the statement.

Too bad for the Note series. It had a part of the Market onto itself.

That being said, something else will replace it, and this can serve as a learning experience that even large corporations have to be extremely diligent in quality control and testing of components to keep the integrity of the product line. Looks like even Samsung, which arguably has the most diversified lines of products in the world from earphones to excavators and should have the most experience, couldn't confirm what was happening with this production line.

So, would selling one be constituted as illegal? I wonder what these will be worth eventually. I got mine through work so it didn't cost me a dime. I wonder if a year from now there will be some underground demand for it. I'll probably switch it out for another android flagship phone but there really isn't one I want right now as I already have an S7 Edge.

This year, had any other Android manufacturer made a decent phone, they could have swooped in and boost their brand in this fiasco. Sadly, all the other flagship phones are not up tp par. LG, HTC, Sony, Google Pixel ??? Its a no, no, no and no for me.

I'm really pissed that they announced this a day after the S7 promo expired.

Would be nice if they extended it so I could at least get a memory card out of the deal, since I'll be stuck with a phone with less storage now.
