The Note 7 has been permanently discontinued by Samsung.

https://techcrunch.com/2016/10/11/s...runch)&utm_content=FaceBook&sr_share=facebook

"Samsung is permanently discontinuing production and sales of the Galaxy Note 7 smartphone, owing to safety fears over defective batteries — including in replacement handsets the company had subsequently sent to customers following a recall of original devices.

The news was reported earlier by the WSJ, and a spokeswomen for Samsung confirmed it is ending production of the device, telling TechCrunch: “We can confirm the report that Samsung has permanently discontinued the production of Galaxy Note7.”"

Well if you're a survivalist you could keep one without the battery installed just in case you needed to start a post apocalyptic fire or something.

It was another shorting Samsung stock kind of day! Whew... completely disproportionate to the value of the company, but that's trading bots for you...

A shame. The Note 4 was perfect, and the 7 was close to perfect. Not sure how this got botched so terribly. Gotta be something with cramming that large a battery into a phone with no bezels and an s-pen.

I bet this is to do with the USB-C charging circuit. That's the only new bit from the S7.

Guess I'll be switching to an S7 Edge. I'll certainly miss the s-pen though.

I switched to an Edge. It's ever-so-slightly snappier and smoother than the Note 7, feels narrower and the rear isn't beveled like the front - IMO it's a bit harder to hold caseless. The Note 7's Grace UX is also much more refined than the UX on the S7/Edge. A bunch of little tweaks I'm missing from the Note 7, such as being able to knock the quick-launch down to 5 icons (minimum of 10 on the S7/Edge), the audio control panel missing from the notification drop-down when connected to BT, the names under the quick-launch icons being the trigger for the settings panel, I'm still finding things. No Secure Folder.

Well, at least I got a free Gear Fit 2 out of it. I almost forgot about that.

I got two uSD cards, a $15 GearVR 2016, and a TV.

the V20 looks interesting, if I have to give up my Note 7. (I'm not until I absolutely have to).

I'll wait it out for the Huawei Mate 9. That thing is looking like it's gonna be a monster.
I would have LOVED to try out a Huawei Mate, Note or Honor device, but they don't support Verizon. I'm fairly limited. =/

I touched the phone in a retail store and to be honestly, it is a great device. however, the boom feature scares me from buying.

According to the NYT, Samsung has been unable to determine the cause of the fires.

@Raduque

Hate to scare you, but google 's7 edge lines across screen' and 's7 edge dark lines across screen'...you might be switching again in the near future depending on your luck.

And be very careful, the screen is very delicate, even for a glass phone.

I have been skeptical of Samsung's product quality before the Note 7 and exploding washer machine became issues.

I recently traded in a Samsung laser printer that advertised wireless-n but does not actually have a wireless-n capable NIC. Never had to worry about a product not actually supporting an advertised wireless standard before that Samsung printer. First Samsung printer I ever bought too.

Plus those crappy Galaxy tablets sold everywhere with super low screen resolutions and 1.5 gb of RAM which is unusable for Android.

I was tempted to get an S7 (I can even get a discount) but too many things going on with Samsung for me this round, plus TouchWiz doesn't help either.

True. I had to get tmobile to swap out my S7 Edge last week because the Always On Display feature would turn my screen a sickly green color. The replacement is working fine, but for how long?

Also, who is going to reimburse me for the 2 Note 7 cases I bought and the 3 USBC cables I bought from Amazon? Sammy relly screwed the pooch this time.

Yep, Samsung needs to come up with some way to cover those losses by owners, some kind of loyalty/reimbursement program, 2 tiers, one for loyal customers, and one for those that jumped ship to another brand.

That does raise another question... how many 3rd party accessory makers also lost money by designing and producing accessories they now can't sell? Is that going to change Samsung support in the future?

Totally agree, I really hope Samsung pushes out Grace UX to the S7/E soon. But I have a feeling it won't be until Nougat is released, probably next year.

I thought Nougat was supposed to be released for the N7 this fall? With that toast, they should be able to focus their energy on the S7E and get it updated pretty quickly.

Agreed, it's their only flagship at this point. Hell, going back to my S7 Edge from my Note 7 makes the microusb and touchwiz so archaic now. I miss USBC and my pen already. I keep checking the web hoping I see a news blip about Sammy finding a fix and reinstating the note 7 line!

It's done, and they're going to destroy all the existing Note 7's, it's almost impossible to recycle phones.

The Note 8 should be even better though.

I know. Many reviews have also been pulled with a news blip about the shutdown.

Noooooooooooooooooooooo!!! That is the most stunning screen. Couldn't they recycle them? Sell them to PC enthusiasts for in-case fan and social media monitoring?

Great. The Note 7 was at the top of my shortlist. Now the list is even shorter. With zero entries. Looks like I'll have to pickup an old Note 4, a bag of batteries and pair of nomex gloves, just in case.

Funny, tons of people are selling their Note 7 BOXES on ebay! I guess we get to keep all the crap that came in the box like headphones, charger and adapters? The return fireproof box seems like you only sent the phone back.

i am not giving anything back except the phone to recoop at least some of the cost on the accessories i have bought for it which wont be reinbursed by samsung, like my supcase, and screen protector.

I am really pissed off honestly at how poorly samsung is handling this.
Infact if it ever goes into a class action law suit, i will be all over it.

Anyhow i am looking at the LG V20 at the moment to replace this ticking bomb.
However i am so accustomed to samsung's andriod layout that i feel i would be completely lost on the LG.
(owner of the original note 1, note 3, note 4.)

The one thing i did notice tho which is sort of making me hessitant to get a S7 edge was the terrible reception the note 7 had.
My note 4 had much better reception in the same area's vs my note 7.

Infact i am running around looking for bars more on the note 7 then i did on the note 4, which leads me to think if its a design flaw.
I heard the S7edge has the same issues with reception, hence why i am looking at the LG V20.

Possibly i may just end up getting a note 5 even as they are priced ok, on ebay now.

I'm fine because the curse only hits me when I buy a launch-day phone, lol

But seriously, if it does go bad, lets hope it happens in the next ~10 days or so - I'll just return it, eat the $35 and cancel the line on my account.

Amazon will take returns on Note 7 accessories even if you are outside the normal return period.

This should not have to be said,
But they have to be purchased there.
