Iphone 4s and Galaxy S3 are more apt competitors in most things.

And in terms of lag or usability speed or movements/motions, snappiness, Galaxy S3 is a competitor to the Iphone 3G or Iphone 3GS at best. Even the Iphone 4 is faster. This is of course with the stock rom and bloatware. With custom firmware, a S3 may be able to compete with an Iphone 4.

However, no android product is as fast as a Iphone 4S leave alone Iphone 5. Not even HTC One X.

And I am not talking of theoretical specs but the lack of lag and smoothness which is felt by the user real time.

I have owned Galaxy S1, S2, S3 and Iphone 4S. And S3 was the slowest of all these 4 phones out of the box, in fact the only unusable phone I have ever used in my life.

Of course, with a custom rom things may be different. However, if you are thinking of this gen, then it is more btw Iphone 4S or HTC One x (one x is decently fast, faster than S2 infact). And Iphone 5 will compete with Galaxy S4 etc.

GSM/HSPA Galaxy Nexus w/ Jellybean. Until/unless you've used that you can't really talk authoritatively about what does and doesn't compete with the iPhone 4S/5.

I have owned an SGS1 and SGS3, and the SGS3 is incredibly faster out of the box than the SGS1. It's faster out of the box than any Android phone on the market. My first-hand opinion mirrors every professional SGS3 review out there.

If you want an android device, I would wait for the next one. There are new android devices released everyday.

If not, I would get the iPhone 5. It'll be a speed demon for sure with iOS + A6.

Then I can.

It's about equivalent to a 4S at this point in terms of interface speed and fluidity. A tad faster than my old iphone 4, but maybe a tad less fluid than my wife's 4S.

Still not a bad choice and, honestly, if I was looking at Android, I'd only be looking at a Nexus. The S3 might be blazing fast when it gets JB, and I'm sure it will get JB eventually, but I don't even think it will be before the end of the year. And it likely won't get KLP.

My Nexus 7 is much snappier than my iPhone 4. There are still some weird bugs though.

The iPhone 4 with iOS 5.1 is simpler yet still slicker, but the Nexus 7 with Jelly Bean is definitely faster.

No big surprise though, as we're talking single-core with 512 MB vs. quad-core with 1 GB.

The GNex with its inferior hardware and Jellybean is faster than the S3 with ICS... proving that no, Android no longer needs beefier hardware to be fast.

Pass the crack pipe that stuff must be good your smoking.

I'm sorry but I am throughly unimpressed with notifications on Jelly Bean. They are far less flexible than iOS. I can turn off Notifications on a per-app basis on JB and that's about it.

On iOS, I can turn off per app. I can also select the kind of notification I want to recieve. I can also choose whether or not I want that notification to show up on my lock screen. I can then decide whether or not I want that notification to show up in the notification shade. If I want it in the notification shade, I can choose how many recent alerts I want to show. Alerts are then shown in groups instead of just whenever they came in, allowing you to quickly see the type of alert you're looking for. Then, I can reorganize the order my alerts show up on the notification shade so that if I always want my calendar at the top, it will be. I can choose to show or not show a preview by default.

So for me, since I hate the idea of a "notification shade" altogether, I'm able to turn off notification center for every app. Then, I'm able to tell most apps I want to see a banner alert. If I'm using my phone, I get the banner alert at the top and it doesn't disturb what I'm doing, not even calendar alerts. For text messages, I prefer to handle those immediately, and so I have it set to give me a modal alert to always interrupt what I'm doing. If my phone is off and I get an alert, every alert shows up on the lock screen, allowing me to see what I missed when my phone was away but now I don't have to go in to the notification center and dismiss all the alerts. Because I've turned it off.

Not to say JB's notifications aren't vastly improved, but I've yet to even encounter an app I use that makes use of them. The entire idea of a "notification center" or "shade" is a kludge. It's a "we don't really know what to do with these yet so we're just going to shove them in here." fix. And all of those little icons in the top left corner? Disgusting.

Honestly, the best notification feature I've found on JB is that if I set my alarm, it will say "Alarm set for 5h and 39m" or whatever. Letting me know how much time I have before the alarm goes off. That's pretty awesome.

So how does iOS tell you there are updates for apps? - Oh it doesnt! you have to load the crappy iOS App store wait for the lag to vanish and then update the apps which then takes you out of the App store to watch the little bars slowly move across each one.

Not to mention the Notifications system is generally just filled with crap that is pushed down from each App you have installed.

No system is perfect to be honest but the iOS one isnt any better than any other phone. The just stole its best features from Android.

Android shows me lots more useful information in the drop down bar and its no where near as instrusive

The App Store badge tells you if you have updates. It checks every so often on it's own. It might not be the frequency you like, but it will work without user intervention.

And iOS 6 won't kick you out of the App Store for installs and updates. It also won't ask for your password for updates or previous purchaes, so that's fixed.

If your notification system is filled with crap, it's because you've clicked 'Yes' everytime an app asks you to allow it to use the notification system. You could just say no. Then it wouldn't fill up with crap. As I noted (but think you didn't read), I dont have ANY apps that leave me notifications in the shade on iOS. I can do the same on Android, but I have to turn notifications off altogether for that app. That means that I can turn notifications off for text messages but I'll never know I got a text message. On iOS, I can turn off the notification center for text messages, meaning I'll never have to drop the shade down to dismiss a notification, but I can still get notified that I have recieved a text message through a banner at the top of the screen, a popup alert I have to dismiss or a notification on the lockscreen.

Listen, I grumbled during the iOS 5 presentation. It was really easy for me to dismiss the Notification Center as a cheap copy of Android's shade and on the surface, if you haven't used both, it's easy to say that. But having been stuck with JB for the past 45 days, Apple didn't just shamelessly rip off the Notification Shade, they completely out did it.

I was aggravated but at least I could make it extremely unobtrusive. When I got JB I was just simply shocked at how busy and obtrusive the notification shade is. The one thing I've been hearing about for years that is so much better than iOS turned out to be one of my biggest disappointements with the Android.

I think you think about this stuff to much. iOS relies on Push for its notifications since it doesnt really multitask anything other than Apples own apps. Push is an unreliable pain in the ass. i had like 200 apps on my iPhone and going into each one to find out what i had turned on was a nightmare. i once missed an ebay item i wanted due to the Push reliance system. If this was on android i could just have left the app running in the background and it would have notified me when the item was about to expire.

It's amusing how little Apple fans know about Android specifics -- and yet they pose as authorities.

Given the number of leaked builds out there already, it wouldn't be surprising if JB for the S3 actually dropped before someone who orders today would get the iPhone 5.

Im running Omega Rom based on 4.1.1 JB. Its silky smooth in 95% of stuff on Beta Kernels.

I ran Geekbench and got 1830 and beat all the CPU scores of the new A6 by a long way. Only the memory performance is much higher in the A6 which is a limit of A9 Arm and not Samsungs fault.

Are you serious?

First Samsung is going to have to finish the upgrade, then the carriers are all going to have to recertify it. I mean, can you give me any example of a quick Android SW upgrade here in the states? I'll just make an clarification.

We'll probably see a JB upgrade for the international SGS3 before the end of the year.

The US version? God, maybe... AT&T & TMobile this year... possibly. Maybe Sprint. If I were going to say this year I would definitely say Late Nov. at the earliest. I mean, we're already in the middle of Sept.

Verizon are douchbags, definitely next year.

He said "before someone who orders today would get the iPhone 5." That's like 3 weeks at this point.

International Jb is expected in October. US version is at the mercy of the Carriers.

I carried by unlimited data plans across to my new phone in June. Not sure if its still possible, but I made the move recently without an issue.

Just to chime in on the calendar. I have 5 different calendars that are all dispalyed on my Rezound with no issue. If you use the Mail app (rather than the Yahoo mail and Gmail app) you can pull all of your email accounts into a single view. I beleive that the iphone also works that way but I only use my iphone for work (and only for work email, calendars, and calls).

As far as the widgets, there is NO getting around them on an iPhone. Widgets are AWESOME! I love having extra information and being able to change settings right on the screen without having to open an app. And no, notifications do not rpelace a widget.

That said, my wife uses iTunes from the old ipod days and I had to get a middleware program to sync. Once it's setup it's pretty seamless, nbut still enceessary.

Yep, it's typical though from the usual suspects.

And always with the false premises, which I guess are supposed to be accepted as fact in order to have something to argue about.

Like the idea that anyone requires JB (and provided from a carrier no less!) in order for their SGS3 to be fast. Some troll floats the notion, and people just run with it.

My SGS3 is blazing fast right out of the box. The fact that could ROM it and make it even better is just icing on the cake.

Apple's already told me what they think of the SGS3 by trying desperately to block it from being sold. If they were confident they were coming out with something soon that was going to blow the barn doors off everything else, they wouldn't have to try to sue their way out of having to compete.

Anyway, leave it to the usual suspects to try and dick-measure a phone they don't even own, vs. one they've never even seen yet!

Phones need to be fondled before purchase. When the iphone 5 is on display go play with both of them and decide which works best for you. Weed thru the BS and opinions from both sides!

I agree with the widgets being awesome, but only because heaven forbid if you need to change a setting on android sometimes you have to dig deep to get to it. iOS you just go to your settings and can see the apps there and change the settings.

If you JB..then its a different story. SBSettings is a great tool.
