After all the complaints about the finger print sensor placement online, I'm not having any problems.
Having a case on it and being a righty makes it a no brainer.
Finger naturally ends up in the spot when I pick up the phone.

So much this...

The reviewers of this phone must not have had access to case at all. The cutouts in the back allow you to easily find the fingerprint scanner. It's now my prime way of unlocking my phone.

I have a hard time giving a good fingerprint for security paperwork, would hate to rely on using one for access to my phone.

Lucky for you you have 4 other secure ways to get into the phone.

If you're a righty, don't you hold your phone with your left hand? I do. Which makes the fingerprint scanner on the left side of the back really awkward for my left index finger. It should be on the flash bulb side. I hate it. So I'll deal with face recognition unlock instead (is this not really secure?)

BTW, how do you re-program the Bixby button to do something else? Or the show open apps button (left of the 3 bottom buttons)? Do you need a launcher like Nova for that? Had it on the old phone but trying to keep apps to a minimum if I could.

I've always held my phone with my right hand.
My left hand's job is to sit there and look pretty.

Bixby button - Haven't messed with it but word on the street is that you can't do anything with it. Since its an additional button vs a re-purposed button I haven't really gave it much thought.

If you hold the left button it will bring up open apps

^ I'm curious how most people use their phones... 1-handed operation with the dominant hand? I assumed most people are 2-handed operation because 1-handed is a special feature you have to enable. I'm coming from a wider Note so I've always been left-hand hold, right-hand click/navigate.

And the question was how to re-program the show all open apps button to something else if there is a way.

One other thing I've discovered is that with the screen off (I don't use the always on), you can still hold where the home button is to turn it on, but the issue there is it's a really small spot to try and find it. Also since there's no physical home button, it's hard to tell quickly which way is top or bottom when pulling the phone out of your pocket.

I always felt that holding a phone with one hand and poking it with the other is the smartphone equivalent of people who have to stare at the keyboard hunting and pecking in order to type.

Not meant to be offensive, it's just something I've noticed around the office. However I've also been a swipe typer for a number of years now, so that may have increased my one hand usage over the norm (not that kind of one hand usage, you pervs)

^ what about texting? It's 2 thumbs, which is how I navigate the phone too. Not other fingers hunting and pecking icons. Reaching with 1 hand across to the opposite corner is just too much work & strain IMO... at least on the Note it was.

Anyone have recommendations for a fast wireless charger to use with it (with a case)?

I swipe text, so just one thumb does all my text input too. I actually do everything one handed, which is why I hate how google keeps sticking buttons in the top left of their apps (google music drives me nuts for this reason). Samsung has an excellent one handed mode though that shrinks the screen down to make it easier to reach that corner. On the S8 I think the gesture is to swipe inward from the bottom right corner. Yes, I will admit that all of this is easier to achieve if I just used two hands, but I just go so used to using 1 that I'll never be able to go back.

Got the earphones, sound awesome. Still can't order the VR. Samsung has not set the site up for us to redeem yet.

I simply used the app on my phone. Downloaded it, logged in. It then prompted me to take a picture of my receipt for the phone, made sure my shipping info was correct, and was done. It said 2 weeks for delivery. By far the easiest rebate/promo/whatever I have done. Very easy, I would imagine far easier than the website. Get the app!

As for the phone, the iris unlock is actually very useful. I thought it'd be a gimmick. It literally takes less than a second to unlock, and it worked in my dark vehicle too. swipe up, or double tap middle button to bring it up, unlocks very, very fast. I am very impressed with the phone. Upped the resolution, not sure why it wasn't set to the highest from the get go though.

Also, the Samsung Gear 3 is supposed to be available soon. They sent it to the FCC about two months ago, lady at Verizon said it will be soon. They don't have a date, but higher ups told them soon. VERY excited about it, almost got another just to use via Bluetooth, but waited. Sucks I cant use it at work, so cant count all my steps and such. Still going to get it.

Won't use the earbuds, I'd let them go for next to nothing if anyone is interested.

Just got an update and after rebooting, got a dqa has stopped message every time.
to resolve, I booted into recovery mode and wiped the system cache
To boot the Galaxy S8 into recovery, start by turning the device completely off. Once it's off, press and hold the Bixby and volume up buttons, then press the power button. Let go of the power once the phone turns on, while still keeping the Bixby and volume up buttons pressed. Let go of the rest of the buttons when you see the blue screen with the Android logo.

Same here, though I didn't reboot it just stopped doing it after a few times. Good info to know though

My update (verizon) seems ok. But perhaps it disabled face unlock? Says something about using my pattern instead of biometrics as required by policy.

Depends on how you have it set up. I have mine to require a pattern after a restart, but only that one time after restarting and then it's the normal method

I didn't realize this until I started googling, but bixby's voice commands weren't ready for launch:

http://www.theverge.com/2017/4/11/15266028/samsung-galaxy-s8-bixby-assistant-launch-voice-support

I googled because I thought I was missing something, but it just isn't working yet.

The other thing I'm finding frustrating is basically having to wake up my phone twice. It's not locked, but I have to press the home button to get out of the always on display, and then it makes me "swipe to unlock". Why can't it just open with one button press? It's really clunky and I can't find a setting to change this.

Settings > Display > Navigation bar. There's an option to unlock with hard press.

I'm liking the plus a lot so far though I personally have given up on the fingerprint scanner.

Great tip from XDA for people who like even more condensed content. For me, the default smallest screen zoom in display settings wasn't quite small enough - I like having more content on the screen and also wanted the OSB to be more compact.

When you enable developer settings, you can change a minimum width setting (default 411) which essentially changes the dpi value. I changed this to 460 and everything became even more condensed at the level I like.

I"m using Nova so adjusting the icon sizes a tad helped balance it out.

THANK YOU!

I'm glad I got the regular s8 and can reach the fingerprint scanner easily. The iris scanner works even with my glasses (that was a concern I had earlier), but I never have the camera aligned perfectly so the delay it takes to aim at my eyes properly is longer than every other unlock method. Good in theory, but I guess I don't look at my phone directly enough for it to be quick. The fingerprint scanner is instant though, so I'll probably stick with that unless I start learning how to aim my phone to hit my eyes every time.

I upgraded to the S8 from the HTC 10 -- I have to say, I don't hate it as much as I expected to, although Samsung software still leaves much to be desired.

If you expected to hate it, why did you even upgrade?

Still no good. Can't get face unlock to trigger at all. Even ran setup again. Still has that statement "draw your pattern as required by security policy, instead of using biometrics." Same with fingerprint now.

Edit> it's so random when it allows it or not

Face unlock is a lower security method and not allowed for things like payments and passwords. It should always allow you to unlock the phone with your face profile, but not much else.

I'm on Jump on Demand, because of Samsung hoarding 835 chips, there wasn't anywhere else to go, but to S8, if I don't change phones, I'm also mostly losing money
