It's crazy how perception changes. Once upon a time I thought the Nexus 4's screen was "big." When I turned the Nexus 4 on to wipe it before sending it in for a trade with the S8, I was shocked at how tiny the screen felt. It felt positively unusable.

I still have my Galaxy S1. Looks like an antique.

How do you tell when HDR is enabled or not? Other than eyballing is there any way to tell if HDR is functioning as intended? I watched a pilot episode of Amazon's "Skyward" on the S8 and my eyes are telling me "this is HDR" but I have no way of verifying they are correct.

quick Q :

Can you use Samsung Themes if you use a different launcher like NOva, or Google Now, etc ?

Yes.

Icons on the desktop and app drawer won't change in Nova, but the system colors, wallpapers, Always On screen etc will.

Edit: And forgot to mention, you can change Nova's icons- with Nova's own settings.

YouTube now lets you know when HDR is enabled. You can see it from the quality setting.

Yep, it's been available for about a month. However, people do note that there are frame drops especially when viewing 1080p60. Lower resolution (like 720p) seems ok.

Same here. I assume it is a software issue that can/will be addressed later since the phone can handle 4K60 playback offline. Some videos do not even give an option to select 1440p. I tried "High Performance" mode in the phone's Settings app, and it did not help much.

Even so, improved quality from HDR is welcome. I compared a same clip non-HDR version (offline) and HDR version from YouTube and there was a noticeable difference.

Well, it may be that the hardware is not powerful enough to process HDR at 1080p60 or higher res. I had Trepn overlay running while playing a 1440p/60fps HDR clip, and saw all 8 cores pegged near their max frequencies (presumably limited max frequencies allowed when all 8 cores are active). SOC temperature climbed up close to 80°C (!!), at which point the SOC started throttling and the video playback became a slow-mo. Kinda disappointing.

Just got a S8+ yesterday on my lunch hour.

This phone is awesome! Coming from an LG G5... jesus christ.

The battery in this S8+ reminds me of my LG G2 days... so nice

Edit::
Just hit the 24 hour mark from the last time I charged this s8+ to 98%
It is now at... 51%
hell yes!

I'm planning to get the S8 or the S8 plus. Can any of you help w.r.t the phone size? I currently own a Nexu 6p and the S8 plus footprint is almost similar to the 6P. Will the S8 be a better pick though? since the screen size is 5.8" and considering the nexus 6p has a 5.7" screen size.

I suggest going to a Bestbuy or cellular provider brick & mortar to judge for yourself. If you have ever used a big phone, the 8+ is a really slim feeling phone for it's size.

Plus both S8 variants are 18:9 to accommodate onscreen nav buttons. So 5.8" measured that way won't be the same as the 5.7" 6P.

I switched from a 6P to the S8+. I find it much easier to deal with the S8+ because it's so much narrower.

Thanks. In your experience, does the curved screen bother you while watching videos or while typing in any way since it's tapered at the edges?

I do not think anyone can be the judge of that. Only you can decide how much it bothers you. It also depends on the content on the display as well as surroundings. I personally had no issue to speak of watching videos and typing on keyboard due to the edge glare. The native Samsung keyboard also gives you an options to resize it in both directions (horizontally and vertically), a feature I hope other keyboards copy. Sadly its autocorrect function is pretty bad - It would be my daily keyboard if it had a better autocorrect engine. But design-wise it is top-notch.

In my usage reading zoomed-in text that is stretched to the absolute edge is a clear case where distortion caused by screen edges is clearly visible and can be annoying.

Hmm ok. Kinda makes sense. I use a 3rd party app (Swiftkey) as my keyboard, and from what I know, it doesn't have any option to resize the layout.

Also, if you've been using the S8/S8+, are you used to the fingerprint scanner at the back by now?

SwiftKey does let you resize. Tap the three lines on the upper left to resize.

I was worried about the location of the fingerprint scanner (don't care it's in the back, because that's where the 6P's was). I think it was over sensationalized by the media. I can reach it perfectly fine on my S8+, and it's easy to locate. If you don't like it, use the iris scanner, face unlock, pin code to unlock.

BTW, the edge doesn't bother me when viewing videos. I watched much of Stranger Things season 2 on the S8+ (I usually hate watching movies/tv shows on my phone), but it was great!

If you hold the phone on the sides and your fingers wrap around does it have a tendency to make 'false hits' (i.e, interact with the touch display) ?
