S8 with DeX docking station is going to beat every device on the market, no PC is required.

Best case scenario, DeX will be an excellent replacement for something like a Chrome OS PC, but not a windows PC.

Chrome OS PCs have actually been quite a large success for Google, but a large part of that stems from the low price of Chromebooks. With the S8 at $700+, I'm not sure if DeX will really be that big of a deal (regardless of how good it may be).

Yeah nothing really surprising. I'm still concerned about biting early and regretting it if the note 8 turns out to be something even better, but I think I'll be happy with the regular S8 and not want anything bigger.

That's my opinion. Many people hop on the Note series because it has a big screen. Well, when even the regular S8 has a 5.8-inch display, where's the rush for the Note? Unless you really like the pen, the Note 8 is going to need a lot to stand out.

Interesting, but I'm more curious on power usage. The Exynos 8890 in my S7 is fantastic,

Samsung can make great ARM chips. I'm thinking they bought out the full first batch of 835 chips just to deny LG and the other competition. For the amount they actually need for the few (single?) US carriers, it doesn't make sense they bought so many.
You have to consider that it is the first 10 nm chip and the yields may not be that great. And it is Qualcomm who sells the S835, not Samsung, and it is not credible for Samsung to exert that kind of power unless it is also in Qualcomm's interest.

I have watched a couple of hands-on videos and come out impressed. I cannot wait to see how the carriers will butcher this beauty to shreds..

Considering that the unlocked version is cheaper, people should ditch the carrier's BS unless they really want a dust-collecting VR headset and whatnot.

The unlocked version of the s7 is also the furthest behind in updates, which I find odd. Sure you can load your own rom and hope the community has everything working right, but I'm getting too impatient to keep up with that stuff.

edit: I just read why, I'm confusing the unlocked and international models. The unlocked models still have the US hardware, so I'm not surprised Samsung doesn't focus on keeping them up to date.

Yields may not be great, but normally a design firm will want to keep most of their clients supplied. Samsung being a manufacturer and biggest client puts Qualcomm in an interesting position.

Also Qualcomm allegedly puts restrictions on Samsung to prevent them from selling the Exynos chip to other clients (which is usually slightly better on power use), should they want to.

Seems like a lot of back scratching going on .

Looks like Best Buy has the best pre-order deal so far - $50 off the S8 and $100 of the S8+ on top of carrier deals.

The desktop dock is a bigger deal than it seems.
Android apps for Chrome are turning the oS into a real desktop OS.
And ofc Samsung and Android must be ready for fodable phones so they need to push a bit.

Yah. It is rather incestuous. It's like everyone is buying and selling from one another.

I had no idea Samsung sells unlocked Snapdragon versions, officially, in the U.S. Thanks for the heads up. (since when did they start selling those?)

I didn't either until I read that article. After some more digging it looked like they were released 3 months after the initial S7 release. Maybe the S7 was the first

No, but a separate keyboard, mouse, and monitor is. I mean it's a nice idea for the rare niche that wants to have a desktop, doesn't already have one and is willing to supply everything else they need to get it running. I have to imagine that niche is small though. The real money will be in doing the same thing in a laptop format, which Asus has sort of attempted with the padfones... but that was mainly for just tablets.

Well I mean if you want to use it as a desktop, then of course you would need a keyboard, mouse, and monitor... I am intrigued and would definitely try it.

The only thing wrong with the S8 is that there's these two other phones coming later this year called the Note 8 and Pixel 2.

I know... but there's ALWAYS another phone right around the corner

Plus with my experience with the 6p I don't think I'll be dealing with another google phone anytime soon. I think I'm going to preorder the s8, which I've never done before, and anxiously await release day. Only downside with that plan is I usually wait on reviews to research cases and such.

Sure there's always newer stuff later, but we know the Note 8 is coming and it will be better than the S8, and if Google eliminates those big bezels from the Pixel 2, then it will also be better.

A laptop style dock for the S8 would definitely be interesting, more so than the current desktop dock. I suppose you might even have it setup so that the S8 screen becomes the touchpad of the laptop when docked in.

Honestly I don't see why anyone would really want to spend $100-150 on the DeX dock, when they can just spend $100-150 on a much more flexible chromebox instead. Sure the S8+DeX combo would probably be better performance, but with Chrome OS performance really isn't all that important anyway.

I suppose in theory the DeX puck is small enough that you could carry it around with you, but that seems like a super niche usage case.

it's about time phone/desktop or maybe fonetop, become mainstream.
the processing is finally here to do some work.

I know S8 with DeX is a niche market, but the problem of Chromebook is that it still can't run 100% of Android APPs.

And for some people, they just don't want to carry a laptop around.

If Samsung would've made their version of the Asus Padfone I'd be all in, just having a dock on a desk is not very useful for people who travel constantly.

Also, since Samsung already have their Android & Chrome all-in-one solution, if they would extend to this it would be fantastic.

I never had a problem with the 6p design externally (the pixel was definitely a downgrade though). I however had a huge issue with battery life, which from the sounds of it turns out to may have been a hardware issue but I couldn't get anywhere with their customer service. They'll need a pretty substantial release to get me to roll the dice on google again after the "support" I received.

The note 8 is going to be a wildcard though. I liked my note 4, and I almost jumped on the note 7 before it all went to hell. If I wanted the bigger size I would probably hold out for the note 8, but given the screen real estate of the regular S8 I don't think I need it any bigger. So I'll probably preorder it and hopefully the note 8 doesn't bring anything so awesome to the table that I regret my decision.

Did Samsung disclose any technical detail about the new display? Something has changed and I have yet to notice the usual PWM-induced waves (strobe) on these new phones in videos.

P.S. Maybe we need a new thread for these phones now that they are officially out?

Early tests already show peak brightness >1000 nits. Can't wait to see this display in person.

Almost the same width as the small iPhone yet has a larger screen than the iPhone Plus..

Interestingly it appears Samsung is cozying up to Microsoft. First we have Dex with Microsoft's blessing, seemingly native support of Office apps, and now it is reported that there will be MS-special S8 and S8+.

Pocketnow said:
In case you were wondering how Microsoft might feel about Samsung’s Continuum-inspired DeX support for the Galaxy S8 and S8+, we now have every reason to believe the Redmond-based tech giant is fine with that.

Not only are the two new Android phones officially compatible with MS Office applications like Word, Excel and PowerPoint for the big screen, but actual Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ Microsoft Editions will be available from US Microsoft Store locations come April 21.

Pre-orders for these special Redmond-flavored GS8 models should also kick off any minute now, although there’s no word on pricing. Of course, a premium over what carriers are charging for “regular” variants wouldn’t make much sense, since all you’re getting extra is a Microsoft “customization” ensuring “best-in-class productivity experience” with pre-loaded Office, OneDrive, Cortana, Outlook and “more” such apps.

It’s important to highlight each and every Galaxy S8 unit contains pre-installed Office, OneDrive and Skype services anyway, so there’s really extremely little of value offered with the S8 “Microsoft Edition.”

Still, the fact that one of Samsung’s arch-enemies and major patent litigation opponents from back in the day is now selling the Korean company’s flagship devices says something. Namely, what seemed an unlikely alliance a couple of years ago is growing stronger, and Windows phones are deader and deader.

P.S. Thank you for thread title change, sweepr.

Actually, due to the fact that the S8 screen is more elongated, it isn't actually bigger than the iPhone Plus screen (they're basically the same size). In other words the S8 might have a larger diagonal, but the total screen area is the same between the two.

Still very impressive of course.
