preordered the S8 from BB

Never preordered a phone before, I'm a little nervous about day 0 bugs. But I'm to the point that my 6p issues are driving me to make a snap decision. I'll have a shiny new phone on the 21st and I'll be waiting for the day with anxious anticipation.

That's my opinion. Many people hop on the Note series because it has a big screen. Well, when even the regular S8 has a 5.8-inch display, where's the rush for the Note? Unless you really like the pen, the Note 8 is going to need a lot to stand out.

The s-pen for the Note 7 was fantastic, and the main reason I hated returning it for the S7E.

Oh, there are definitely people for whom the pen is the thing... I just think the S8+ risks being too good at satisfying demand for a big screen. Even if the Note 8 is something ridiculous like 6.6 inches, I can see many people not bothering to wait. That's good in a sense (it could mean more sales early on), but it could be disappointing in the fall if fewer people buy the Note 8.

We’ve re-assessed every step of the smartphone manufacturing process and developed our 8-Point Battery Safety Check. It involves putting our batteries through extreme testing, inside and out, followed by careful inspection by X-ray and the human eye to ensure highest quality. This program is our commitment to safer devices now and in the future.
Translation: no more fire bombs, especially 'in the future' ie, when we release the Note 8.

The s8 looks pretty awesome. Can't wait to see one IRL. But I'm still holding out for the Note 8.

Same here. I did preorder the 8+ as I am a tech junkie. Still using my Note 7 and my S7 Edge is just collecting dust. In fact I may sell the S7 Edge soon. I can never use any one phone for longer than 6 months. Its a sickness. But, the Note 7 is the ONLY smartphone that I have used the longest. It is near perfect.

I expect the Note 8 to have an embedded fingerprint sensor, which is a really nice feature to have. That and the S Pen are reason enough to wait for the Note in my mind, but I have been using iPhones for too long now and I'm itching to get back to an Android phone.

Same here, fingerprint sensor in the back would drive me nuts like the Pixel. Eagerly awaiting the Note 8 with stylus, or whatever Samaung decides to call it.

Actually, due to the fact that the S8 screen is more elongated, it isn't actually bigger than the iPhone Plus screen (they're basically the same size). In other words the S8 might have a larger diagonal, but the total screen area is the same between the two.

Still very impressive of course.
You are right, of course. I did a correct-ish math.

Galaxy S8: 5.8" diagonal, 18.5 : 9 -> 6.4 cm (W) x 13.2 (H) = 84.48 cm²
Galaxy S8+: 6.2" diagonal, 18.5 : 9 -> 6.9 cm (W) x 14.2 (H) = 97.98 cm²

iPhone 7: 4.7" diagonal, 16 : 9 -> 5.9 cm (W) x 10.4 (H) = 61.36 cm²
iPhone 7+: 5.5" diagonal, 16 : 9 -> 6.8 cm (W) x 12.2 (H) = 82.96 cm²

The regular S8's screen estate seems still a bit larger than the iPhone 7+, though not by a lot. (84.48 v. 82.96) They are just about equal in area, it seems. (considering potential errors in my approximation)

I bet if you then subtract out the lost pixels due to the useless rounding of the screen corners, the total visible area is just about identical. Still impressive to get the iPhone 7+ screen in a much smaller body though.

Oh, I forgot about that part. Without knowing the radius of the corners it is impossible to tell how much space is lost, but you are right those rounded corners are going to cut into the total areas I calculated.

Does anyone know when the full review will be posted? I'm wondering if it will be up before the preorder window closes. Last year the Galaxy S7 review was posted 4 days before release date. It looks like S8 preorders end on 4/15, with a release date of 4/21.

Those people that do are probably held to Samsung embargoes that they can't disclose (that won't stop unofficial reviews, of course).

My guess: the embargoed reviews arrive the same week as the S8's debut, most likely the 17th or 18th. No idea if AnandTech will have one at the same time, but I'm sure you'll see a whole bunch of write-ups go up at once. It's all about drumming up hype right before the phone is widely available.

But, the Note 7 is the ONLY smartphone that I have used the longest. It is near perfect.

Samsung may actually sell refurbished Note 7's- since they have a few million of them laying around.

https://techcrunch.com/2017/03/27/samsung-note-7-refurbished/

Unfortunately, NOT in the US.

I swear, if I could trade my s7e for my same blue Note 7 (even with a smaller battery in it) I'd so so in a freakin' heart beat. Nothing would make my wait for the N8 easier than having my N7 back.

At this stage, looks like you get the last laugh, having kept yours!

My thinking on why they won't sell refurb Note 7's in the US: when just ONE of them (literally one) catches fire -as singular units of ANY cellphone model will do- people would lose their freakin' minds, throw hissy-fits, insist on yet another recall and Samsung would take it in the shorts yet again.

So I guess they will release it elsewhere in the world where the media won't go into a tailspin when the inevitable happens. Sad though.

@Oyeve: I must have missed something but how do you have the Note 7? I thought Samsung "turned off" those that are not returned.

This phone physically looks great but Android arm is still pathetic compared to Apple. 820 was only like half the speed of A10's per core, rather key to largely web browsing done on smartphones, and 835 is only maybe 15% improvement.

It is more than a 15% but yeah it was not a big jump in Performance. Their goal this year was sustained performance, reduce TDP ( power consumption), adding features and lowering the size of the chip. So if they deliver as it looks it is not that bad. Last year in the A10Fusion Apple increased the maximun power consumption in order to get more performance compared to the previous A9 and lowered the sustained performance. The 7 Plus drops 40% performance in the GPU run test and the increase in CPU frequency was too big to not get a hit in power consumption ( 2'34GHz vs 1'84GHz) at same 16nmFF+.

I use my t-mobile sim in a Verizon note 7 and didn't get any updates. 100% battery. Fully functional.

My European Note 7 was limited to 30% max battery charhing and last thing I heard was that they would prevent any charging in next update.
