Don't see any reason to replace my edge with this. Given how difficult it was to find an ok plastic screen protector and that no glass ones exist for these, that makes it even less likely for me.

what screen protector did you end up going with?

^ are screen protectors really still necessary? I've just had one because of old school thinking. If the screens are resistant to keys and coins, is that good enough? I just won't bring the phone out to the beach (sand). My wife's S7 plastic screen protector was a royal PITA to get it to play with the case.

I think people are mainly worried about microabrasions than anything else.

My solution is a bit of an odd one: I just use a microfiber sunglasses pouch to hold my phone. It takes more effort to get it ready, of course, but it also keeps the phone scratch-free without having to apply a screen protector.

Finally got to see the 8+ in person.
Doesn't feel much wider in the hand than my S4 in its UAG case. The finger print reader location seems natural for me as a righty and with a case on it should be fine.
Checked the storage and it appears 10gb is for "System stuff"

I'll probably order the 8+ tonight. Will probably get the same color UAG case as I had on my S4.

Should be a nice upgrade coming from my trusty 4 year S4.
S4 will now spend the rest of its days as a Fios "cable box"\ Netflix\Kodi\ General Media center for our kids playroom TV using the HML cable.

Gorilla glass or not these screens scratch really easily. My old S7 had a few bad scratches I was glad was returned because of a faulty micro SD card reader (well known S7 problem). Now I'm using a full 2 piece silicone cover instead of screen projector which do affect visibility when using the Gear VR.

Well, I had the same thought when I had the Note 4 and didn't put a screen protector on it. About a month later I really regretted it. I still don't know what caused the scratches but I won't be making that mistake again.

With the S8 I think I'll be going with one of the soft wet application types which should fit the screen contours better.

afaik, a phone in the pocket with something like a credit card can have dust or something trapped between the screen and the card and easily causes small scratches on the screen

I can't help but wonder if that will be Apple's ace in the hole if the fabled OLED iPhone arrives this year: "we have an all-screen phone as well, but ours doesn't make you smudge your camera trying to find the fingerprint reader." Just put your thumb on the bottom part of the screen.
If samsung was working on it and didn't have enough time then that gives apple 6 months to finish it, so odd's are they will include it. Now the note series will come out at the same time, so odd's are by then it will have the reader under the front glass, if they announce it a week earlier they will steal apple's thunder... assuming its not another S sidegrade.

I have never used one on my 7 Edge in about a years use. I can't see any scratches on it at all. I won't ever bother getting one for the S8. I don't keep anything else in my pocket with my phone though, which Im sure helps.

My wife on the other hand has cracked 2 "unbreakable" glass shields that Verizon put on by dropping her iPhone. I think the actual screen would have been just fine without it, but the protector cracked after the fall.

The glass screen protector business is a thing of brilliance... they somehow convinced people into buying inferior glass to put on top of their properly engineered glass. The screen protector being made of something that's so fragile it needs consistent replacement due to scratches, edge chips, or outright cracks from falls that shouldn't affect anything. On top of that, there are people out there who for some reason think "glass is glass" and that if they didn't have their glass screen protector on that the REAL phone would have cracked just the same. These people are actually happy to buy another cheap piece of glass to replace the inferior POS that was just proven to be overly fragile.

Mother f'in brilliant

Got to try the S8 and S8+ at a Verizon store tonight. The phone was very fast and fluid, and while it looks great, I actually am not a fan of how skinny they are. It looks too much like a candy bar, and standard YouTube videos looked way too small. I prefer the 16:9 format, and I hope the Note 8 goes back to that.

I don't understand that. On my 7edge the video takes up the entire display.

It's because the S7E is 16:9. The S8's display ratio is different, it's longer on the top and bottom and also a little thinner on the sides. Great for web browsing in portrait, but it's not as good for standard 16:9 video. Wish I recorded it.

The Galaxy 8+ (which I assume will have the same screen size as the note) is just a fraction of a millimeter narrower than the note 7. That means when displaying 16:9 content, the displayed screen size is about the same as the last gen. They really only gained more vertical space, which at best is great for web and texts, at worst it's the same displayed screen size as the note 7 for video.

Hmm, then it must be the added vertical space that makes the narrower shape more pronounced in my mind. Either way it's a gorgeous phone.

I think they said apps need to specifically support the rounded corners they have. otherwise sides of the screen are not used. That's what it's been reported, i think on theverge.

Currently have an HTC 10 -- thinking about going to S8+, although the thing holding me back is still TouchWiz and lack of a stereo speaker.. Would the Note 8 have it? Or should I wait for Pixel XL 2?

Pre-ordered yesterday for the 8+. I have a 7 Edge to trade in, but only give me $230 for it. Think I can probably do better elsewhere, it's in great shape. I don't owe anything, paid cash for it. Already paid for the 8+, $840. If I trade in I'll get some visa gift card or apply towards my bill. Keeping my old school unlimited, $10 more than the new one but no throttling after 22gigs.

Pretty excited about it, felt great and looked fantastic. Plus free VR is not bad.

Sell it on Swappa. If its in great shape, you can get more than $230 for it. I've had nothing but great experiences selling phones on there... quick, easy, no hassle, and probably the best price you'll get.

XDA published an article that covers my worry about these 2:1 ratio screens:

https://www.xda-developers.com/lg-g6-user-experience-18-9-problems/#disqus_thread

Basically, because phones like the G6 and S8 have gotten thinner on the sides, stuff like 16:9 video ends up looking smaller in comparison to many phones out now. As someone who watches a lot of video on their phone, this is pretty important to me. Though when looking at layered photo comparisons between the S8 and other phones, it doesn't seem like the actual difference in display width is as much as I thought. Gonna have to do a YouTube comparison in store.
