Guess what this contraption is!!!

I will post some hints in this post to guide guesses.

Hint #1: You can't buy it...yet. But even if you could, you couldn't afford it.

Hint #2: To get a better pic, I'd have to book a 6 hour flight, drive to a large manufacturing facility, break through security, walk into a test lab, and then take a pic. And posting a better resolution pic borders on corporate espionage!!!

Hint #3 > BIG HINT: This company is closely related to a company that's BIG on printers. They practically invented them.

UPDATE: CONTEST OVER! IRONWING WINS!!! It is a prototype mass spec.

Hmm...good guess, but no. Actually, I had to "look up" whether the device used lasers, but I don't think it does. It does use a related technology though.

Hmm, may I revise my guess then?

I would say it is a new power source. Inside the larger box with the vent holse is a series of hamster wheels. while the hamsters inside try to run they spin the wheel which in turn spins that exposed shaft on the right side of the picture which are turbines which creates electricity.

better than solar power, generates electricity even when the sun is out

ok I just realized I totally misinterpreted something in the pic. that long shaft turns I guess? I thought it was some kind of tube-shaped chamber. but I think I see bearings now... it doesn't seem like a cool thing anymore

No? Seriously though, we weren't supposed to take pics. But this was not a top secret lab. Anyone who's an "official visitor" gets a guided tour of their lab full of next-generation product prototypes being tested. And its not hard to get a visitor badge. Besides, all the NDA'd hardware is covered under the casing.
