Sonic Adventure 2 - the levels where you have to hunt down the jewels with Knuckles or the bat girl: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUG0V1dByUA

If you look at that video, it probably doesn't seem bad but it's extremely tedious, especially when you seem to be on the right track but just can't find the goddamn jewel. If you hate the idea of using metal detectors to hunt for things in real life, you'll hate this even more. Made the game unplayable for me and I gave up (too bad b/c the action platforming levels were good and the game starts off great)

Borderlands the Pre-Sequel - final boss.

I really hate the cliche of a final boss that you have to kill 3-4 times straight without dying once yourself from their insta-kill attacks, especially with a checkpoint save system where you must start completely over for each attempt.

I understand one of the characters (Athena with shield?) can cheese the boss, but it's an annoying slog for the others.

I recently finished TPS and the only story DLC. While I managed to kill the final boss of the main game on first try, the Claptrap DLC's final boss is ridiculous. It's 3 boss fights in a row (at least you get a checkpoint between each "phase"). And while the first one is decent enough, the second phase with homing rockets instagibbing you, spawning enemies all the time, knockbacks is quite infuriating. And when I thought that's it? Then comes phase 3... F**K 2K Australia, that final phase is just absolutely ridiculous. No place to hide, several "shield resets", soooo many mobs, the boss hammers at you all the goddamn time with many different attacks (some insta-kill you) and has a huge health pool. At least he's easy to hit. Took me a few tries (I was running out of ammo!!) and in the end I managed just because phase 2 got me a glitch ravager explosive shotgun (gets random bonus on a reload... got 10x damage, 2x ammo usage - 3-shot him at that point).

And after all that? He spits a legendary out, it flies in the air and falls through the floor (FFFFFFF bugs!!). So no reward for all the trouble in the end... I was so mad! But I go hand in the quest and think "let's see how I do a second time, I already know the mechanics". So second time goes a wee bit smoother (only phase 2 and 3 are there). But I die just as the boss dies too and... I run back to where he dies and no loot D: At that point I said "f**k it, f**k this game, f**k 2K Australia, f**k Gearbox" and promptly turned it off. What a waste of time that was, I just wanted to finish it in the end to "fill out" story elements that lead to BL2 (which I absolutely loved, all DLCs included).

So yea, last boss of The Pre-Sequel's only story DLC takes the cake.

Irenicus' Dungeon in Baldur's Gate II. Can't tell you how many times I sped through it before finally discovering the mod that let you skip it.

The final level of the original Far Cry, it was just BS.

The seemingly mandatory mission where you get captured and all of your equipment gets confiscated.

Not exactly sure if these are the same or not. But it's definitely my most memorable fail level. In original Far Cry, when you are captured, stripped of all your bad-ass collection of weapons and thrown out of a helicopter with a single M16 and a few rounds, to survive against one of those big bad nasty "somethings" (LOL cannot recall name atm). I just simply could not get past that level. Tried and tried and tried, just couldn't do it. Never did finish that game, due to that one single obstacle.

The Meat Circus in Psychonauts. Stopped me cold, I never finished the game.

This was the original XBox version. I gather the PC version trimmed back the difficulty.

I must be the only person who never hated that dungeon.

Its full of nice goodies, and is an excellent opportunity to get used to your PC's abilities, find out of you really like them or not.

The only place I hated was the Mind Flayer dungeon. You need to have a very well equipped party to slog thru all the mind controlling, instant death special powers, and horrible traps scattered everywhere.

Usually the last level of most games, where (specially in JRPGs) you have to fight a whole bunch of fights, and then kill the boss like 3 times, without being able to save.
That and stealth levels, I suck at stealth.

mind flayer dungeons and beholder lairs are probably the hardest parts of BG2 without a properly equipped party.

Beholder Lairs are OK if you save up and purchase that special shield in Waukeens Promenade. Just give it to Korgan along with a solid axe, cast Death Ward on him, and send the little ah heck in alone.

Without protection Beholders are even worse than Mind Flayers. They have more abilities and a LOT more h.p.

Most levels that bother me are usually older games. For modern games, it's usually boring level design that bugs me.

1. DeathTrap Dungeon, the level where they release the minotaur's = rage
2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on NES, the second level where you are under water, it is timed and you must navigate pixel perfect to each bomb ....fuck that level. Hell fuck that game.
3. Fester's Quest on NES...any level on that game, it's crazy hard.
4. Flashback on SNES...the escort mission. Though I figured out that if I kept him locked up in a room by himself and clear out the baddies ahead, it's very easy.

Puzzle Adventure games always irritated me if they make it so the cursor doesn't change when you hover over something you can interact with. And of course any game where timed missions are tight.

The intros to the first 2 Witcher games. WTF were they thinking? We DARE you to like this game! (Which I love those games, just not the horrible intros)

GTA3: Newspaper delivery. Or other timed missions. Jesus, those make me appreciate today's easy standards in games.

And, yes, it's hard to endure forced stealth in non-stealth based games.

I'm appreciating the new Survivor mode in Fallout. It certainly adds the challenge. But drastically reduced carry weight and no fast travel... Argh!

Any GTA mission in which you have to remote control a helicopter. I think there is one in Vice City and one in San Andreas.

Another one I heard recently was how someone playing XCOM: Enemy Within will rage-quit if the 'Newfoundland' mission is sprung on them early on in the campaign... I feel their pain

thats because it really hurts when half your team dies and u have no way to revive them.

The seemingly mandatory mission where you get captured and all of your equipment gets confiscated.

I always hate any mechanic like that.

I remember in STALKER Clear Sky where you have that main quest to go in that underground shelter and they flash bomb you and take your stuff.

Fortunately it's easy to get around (just drop all your gear on the ground before you go in, it will all be sitting there when you come back out).

And yeah - - what was already said about FarCry.

Alien Isolation -- the trek out to the ship mission on any replay of the game, also not a big fan of the hive missions for some reason. I still thought this was one of the best games in the past 3 years, however, the trek level is tedious after the first time and the contrast in gameplay from stealth/diversion to quick action shooting for the facehuggers is a little offputting

HL2 - Ravenholm, this is more love/hate than anything, still a very good section of the game but I'm sure I'm not the only one that sighs a little when the level starts

BioShock 2 - escort little sister mission, not horrible but bleh

That one required several attempts to discover the perfect route to find a downed helicopter with a mounted machine gun. Take different routes until you discover the one that gets you to it. Later on, in the same general level, you'll have a similar obstacle while riding a jeep, where you need to find the right route to jump over the lava and avoid the enemy.

You will fail if you attempt to fight your way through.

Far Cry 4 does it as well, but you only need to climb down a mountain then you get all your goodies back.

I never progressed far enough in Far Cry 2 or 3 to see if it happens.

I still have The Hulk for PC (Eric Bana version movie tie-in) and the levels where you have to be Bruce Banner suck.

Any level that involves total darkness.

Half-Life 2: Ep. 2 -- Waiting for the elevator with Alex in the darkness while getting attacked by pretty much every zombie creature. Took so many tries to get past this part (and the final Strider battle too) on hardest difficulty.

Doom 3 -- Several areas that were pitch black for extended periods. I actually didn't mind the switching between flashlight and weapon except for a few levels where you couldn't see shit without it.

Ninja Gaiden 2 -- Some level early in the game that was pitch black until lightning lit up the map. Couldn't get the timing right for some reason and kept getting knocked into pits and dying.

either gta3 or vice city, can't remember - mission to fly a mini helicopter through a building, planting bombs, iirc. I hated flying the copters, mini or regular size. And this one was worse than usual, because you had construction workers coming after you. I think I took an extended break from the game when I ran into that mission.

Any saints row - the drive the hookers around while they entertain their famous clients missions. Hate those.

Shadowhearts Covenant - mission where everyone is in prison, and you have to play the dog, doing a solid snake impersonation. It was actually fairly amusing to see him stand up on 2 legs, and press up against the wall and all, but like everyone else, I hate stealth missions in non stealth games.
