Started The Witcher 2 for the first time a couple nights ago and just uninstalled it moments ago. So I'd say I hated playing the entirety of the prologue and the parts of the first chapter that I played until I gave up. I wouldn't doubt that it gets better, but I couldn't handle another second.

The Meat Circus in Psychonauts. Stopped me cold, I never finished the game.

This was the original XBox version. I gather the PC version trimmed back the difficulty.

I was going to say this as well. I played the PS2 version. I got through it, but damn.

Also the bottom of the sea level in Grim Fandango, the 'This little light of mine...' puzzle. I spent like two weeks of my life trying to solve that puzzle.

Any level that involves total darkness Ninja Gaiden 2.

Ninja Gaiden 2 -- Some level early in the game that was pitch black until lightning lit up the map. Couldn't get the timing right for some reason and kept getting knocked into pits and dying.

Fixed that for you....

...really, ANY game level where the entire game mechanics get thrown out for a radically different style.

Icy roads in Spy Hunter
Water swimming in Mario Bros.
Going from guns-blazing to "sneak-past-the-guards" in Sin
Adding a painfully-short time limit to something you can normally take your time in...
ugh.

When I buy a game it's because I like that style of game - don't throw a completely different one at me JUST to be different!

-The RC copters, mini bomber planes and the mission where you have to drop fliers all over Vice city.

-Max Payne dream sequences.

-Crysis: Flying the bloody VTOL.

-Metro Last Light: Those goddman missions on the surface with the gas masks. Had me on edge the entire time since I always had one eye on the gas mask filters.

-Horse racing in The Witcher 3.

Thousand Maws of Toto-Rak in FF14. I end up getting that dungeon in the roulette constantly.

This.

Cyrostasis is the biggest offender when it comes to the battle with Chronos.

Never did finish that game because they changed everything in that battle - turned it into some kind of damn locked down Arcade fight versus the rest of the game.

Generally-speaking, with only a few select exceptions here and there, I'd say that I really dislike " water levels ". From Mario Brothers (any of them, even in SM64) to 'water-themed' levels such as the Water Temple in Ocarina of Time (which I hated at the time and still hate to this day), and so on. There are exceptions, of course. And here I'm not saying that I hate water in games per se, but there seems to be a propensity towards mediocrity whenever water is present in any particular level or fashion in a level.

I have no issues whatsoever with the water and its 'role' in a game like Bioshock, for example, and in fact it positively adds to the superb atmosphere of the game. But whenever developers try to include "water mechanics" or water-based 'puzzle solving', it generally tends to simply suck really hard. And for that reason, over the years, I've developed this automated reaction of repulsion to such levels when I see them (especially when I don't expect them at all, and boom, here's a "water level", enjoy).

I dislike open world games/levels. I LOVED the MGS5 prequel, but I have barely gotten through the real game. The reason is because of the sandbox.

after you leave midgar and go to kalm and have to do the stupid flashback in FF7...

what a waste of time.

god I hated that

The seemingly mandatory mission where you get captured and all of your equipment gets confiscated.

also hate these.

Off the top of my head:

The Russian control center in Golden Eye--I think you break out of jail to begin, and it's mostly stealth. That was a pain.

Dragon Age: Origins. That one Mage's Tower puzzle mission. It was so hated on release that a mod was quickly created to skip it entirely. what a godsend.

I put down the Witcher 2 years ago because of the Karyn or whatever it was. Only picked it up again last year ahead of Witcher 3 and played it through.

More recently (for me), I only started playing Homeworld, assuming I would go into Homeworld 2....but that mission where you have to navigate through space dust, otherwise radiation eats you. Not only is that annoying because I find the z plan maneuvering entirely janky, but for some reason my collectors refuse to load into my carrier, so I can't really transport them to resources. I gave up and put that game down weeks ago. I used to have patience for stuff like this, but no more. I get that without tossing in some forced mechanics a lot games like this end up feeling samey from mission to mission, but some feel way more forced and unnecessary than others.

Borderlands the Pre-Sequel - final boss.

I really hate the cliche of a final boss that you have to kill 3-4 times straight without dying once yourself from their insta-kill attacks, especially with a checkpoint save system where you must start completely over for each attempt.

I understand one of the characters (Athena with shield?) can cheese the boss, but it's an annoying slog for the others.

That guy doesn't really give me problems. I usually play with Nisha (it has been a while), but taking him out on UVH/Raid or whatever isn't too bad. ...of course it helps to cheese with some of those "broken" Jakob's legendary assault rifle mechanics, but you don't really have to.

The only boss that gives me problems in TPS is the Bosun. for whatever reason...I just hate that guy. Also hate that entire part of the story, with the map you have to criss-cross several times, just to get to his ship which is itself incredibly tedious. It's one of those long deals with sparse saves that you pretty much have to do in one go, or you have to restart at the beginning. It's like a forced Raid-style time commitment. I knew there was something here more recently that I hated, and you reminded me.

Also as mentioned--the Cl4p-trap final boss in TPS. ....Oh I hate that.
