Season 1 came out about a month prior to season 2's premiere and it appears that season 2 will do the same as it comes out in February. I'm hoping for a good deal like I got on season 1 ($34.99).

Just finished reading the last book (book 5). All I can say is that this series is teaching me to not become emotionally invested in any character. Martin loves to kill them. I get the feeling that in another X number of books the last character standing hasn't even been born yet.

After watching the HBO series, I decided to start reading the books. The books definitely have a lot more detail into the characters and what goes through their heads. The books are fantastic, but really long.

So far I'm about 3/4 through the second book, taking my sweet time with it. I can't wait for season 3 to come out, and wish they had a boxed set for season 2.

Just saw that they have season 2 in blu-ray on amazon; woo-hoo!

Bah the amazon version is pre-order.

He's not that far off. Her brother is like the pimp.

Meh, that was medieval royal marriages for you. They were all about forming alliances, consolidating power, ensuring bloodlines were intact, etc. Very little to do with love and being attracted to your SO.

I think the plan is for 7 books, but I've heard he's intending on something like 1200 pages already for book 6.

Though HBO has latitude to futz around with some chronology and even remove entire arcs when they're inconsequential to the overall storyline, book 3 definitely needs to be split in to at least two seasons. Way too much content to cover in one season, imo. Also hopefully gives GRRM some more buffer to get through the final books before HBO catches up.

10 years per book; not sure if he'll live that long. I'm hoping he gets his arse in gear and finishes up book 6 with the quickness. Supposedly the HBO writers / show producers met with him and were able to get an outline of books 6 and 7, just in case he dies before the books are written, so that they can conclude the series.

You still have a treat in front of you. Book 3 is absolutely the best. Some dont like 4 and 5 but I still enjoyed them.

I'm finding 4 harder to get through, so far (about 1/3 through), though I've been told 5 is better.

3 was an incredible roller coaster.

I thought so. A smoother read and a little more action/explanation. Dont know how else to explain it. You can almost tell its only the first half of the book when you finish it.

It's more like 5-6 years per book. At this pace I don't think there's any way he lives to finish the series. He's 64, overweight and seems a lot more interested in attending comic book shows and blogging about football than in writing ASOIAF. Even if he sticks to the idea of seven books and the series doesn't grow again as it has done before, at current pace he'll 75 by the time book #7 gets here. And that's assuming he doesn't get slower which has been happening with each book.

Hell, I'm not sure I'll live to long enough to see the series end and I'm a lot younger than he is.

Just checked the most recent news and in a year and a half since he's finished ADWD he's done about 1/6 to 1/8 of the writing for The Winds of Winter with only 200-250 pages "done" of a planned 1500 or so.

Nice, can't wait
to see Joffrey get poisoned, that little sh!t.

Let me just say I had little idea that was coming, and it probably only ranks as the third or fourth most surprising event of book 3, IMO.

I don't expect him to finish the books before the TV show catches up. Read his blog. He's an obsessive football fan, so he's not getting much done during football season. Now that he's super famous, he gets invited everywhere, and admits he can't say no to an invitation. He's also doing more other projects than ever before.

I believe I read somewhere that the 3rd book will span 2 seasons on the series.

Need to get off my ass and finish Dance. :/

Also, still kicking myself for being Season 1 on DVD and not BluRay. Though, in my defense, I didn't get a decent setup until 2 months after I bought the set.

No problem, so much happens in A Storm of Swords that they can easily get 20 episodes out of the material.

Then, BIG problem. Not a whole hell of a lot happens in A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons. They're talk-y and there's VERY little plot advancement. I think less happens in those two books combined than happens in the last half of ASOS. I don't see how they could milk those books into 2 seasons apiece and I don't see how they can keep the series going when they're so quickly going to outpace Martin. No matter what they do with the next 3 books whether its 4 seasons like the material demands or 6 seasons to slow it down to the maximum possible there's still no way to get the final season on the air without a 5 year gap between the last two books. And if they go to something like a 2 year gap between seasons which is what would be needed to stay closer to GRRM's pace then they lose momentum and the series will die long before they get to the end anyway.

Does anyone see a way that the last book of ASOIAF can make it to TV as part of the current HBO series? There's no way for the timing to work.

Well, as mentioned, the writers and producers have had discussions with GRRM (and will continue to do so, I'd expect) about his outline for the remaining story. However, an outline without enough small details could still result in very different stories, I worry.

Yes, so they can finish if he dies, but I'm sure they can't get ahead of the books. There's no way HBO can do A Dream of Spring before it hits the shelves and the best case scenario would have it hitting the shelves around 2022. How does HBO stretch the series that long while keeping viewers interested in it?

The writers will just have to fill in the blanks from the outline that GRRM gave them, and hope it matches the story he writes. The show has already deviated from the series, so it will be just even more of a deviation, I'd suspect.
