You see, to me, it was a breath a fresh air. Every other story line has characters that you love and are somehow impossible to harm. Martin treats the characters like the sacks of meat that they are, and the result is so jarring that it's wonderful. I think it's been years since I've read fiction books where I was actually in suspense over what would happen.
If this were the end of the books, and Martin declared the war over, I might have been upset, if for no other reason than the end was so inglorious. But he didn't. Power is balanced shortly after this and we start from square one. This is the way war tends to work in the real world, with enormous amounts of horrible damage on both sides.
Go back to the episode where Melisandre was doing the incantation with the leeches fat with Kings Blood and notice the three people she named. One down,
