It's amazing how upset people are about the red wedding. Did you honestly think that the Starks were just going to cruise on through the series and be victorious? You should have known that was out the window at least when they killed, Ned, Lady, and the other thousand characters before.

bullshit he forgot, lol.

Let me help you with that URL. "theonion.com"

Wow, their search sucks balls. Searched for "Game of Thrones", "Forgot that Happens", "Oh Shit, I Totally Forgot That Happens", "George R R Martin", "George R.R. Martin" and "George Martin" and couldn't find that article which is titled "Oh Shit, I Totally Forgot That Happens!" by George R.R. Martin.

Reading the books it became obvious to me that no-one was safe after killing Ned and Lady. It wasn't until The Red Wedding that I decided he was building up characters to do this to us on purpose EVERY GOD DAMN TIME.

Wtf turns out George R.R. Martin totally forgot that he wrote the red wedding http://www.imdb.com/news/ni550234003/?ref_=hm_nw_tp_t1

I've met George Martin twice, the first time in 2003 and the second in 2007, on both occasions it was at Dragoncon. The first time I talked with him we discussed Wildcards for ~10 minutes, when next we met he not only remembered my name but continued our previous conversation where we left off.

Him forget the Red Wedding?

Yeah, yeah, I know The Onion, just thought I'd share my story, for those who have any doubts WRT that man's memory in any way.

Yeah, nobody is safe. Not the numerous times Jon Snow almost died, nor Arya escaping capture and death over and over, nor Bran and Rickon escaping the iron born, trekking half way across the world and getting to the wall. Or what about Sansa being part of the game over and over yet still surviving.

Ned had to die, he was too "good" and his patron died, without him Ned was check-mated. Lady was inconsequential, a mere pawn to a spoiled kid.

Characters are built up constantly, it's just not the ones that many want to keep going.

not sure why people are utter pansies about this stuff.

I thought it was great (coming from a non-book-reader fan of the HBO series). I was reading a critique of the episode earlier that I felt made a lot of sense. Basically, most shows start as TV shows; they don't have a story mapped out ahead of time beyond maybe a season or two, and the risk of alienating fans by killing off major characters means shows won't bother taking that risk. When you've got a series based around a story that already has enough content to cover multiple seasons, you don't need to bother with those television conventions, you just need to focus on telling the story in a way that keeps it interesting for people who already know what happens. Martin wasn't beholden to a TV audience when he wrote the books so he doesn't need to stick to the basic standard of television, "the hero always triumphs." It's funny, seeing as how the series has dragons and zombies and smoke monsters and resurrection and magic, but it all comes across as more believable than most other TV shows specifically because there's an absence of the mythos that good will always triumph over evil. It's a nice fairy tale to tell ourselves, but it's simply not how the world works.

I'm trying to stay away from spoilers, so the following paragraph contains absolutely nothing grounded in content from the books (it's not spoilers unless you assume I'm clairvoyant). Based on the way the series has developed, GRRM clearly has no problem killing off anyone at any time. There are simply too many characters left that I like to assume they'll all escape unscathed for too much longer. So, while I have no idea whether or when they'll die, I'll preemptively say that I'm going to miss Tyrion, Tywin, Olenna Tyrell, Jaime, Arya, Sandor "The Hound" Clegane, Bronn, Daenerys, Cersei, Varys and Davos. And probably Littlefinger, more because I like Tommy Carcetti than anything else, and he seems to be turning into Batman (I'm just going to speak all my lines in a harsh whisper). Joffrey is a righteous fuck, so he'll live forever. Oh, and motherfucking Hodor. Hodor is the man. He always knows exactly what to say. Which is not to say that the other characters aren't any good, but they aren't nearly as entertaining as that lot.

This isn't a huge spoiler but so far, in the books, out of the 14 people you mention there are
12
of them left IIRC.

Yeah the woman that Robb marries in the book is Jeyne Westerling. The girl he marries in the show is a Volantis girl named Talisa.
Yes - a completely pointless sub

BTW, wasnt one of the plot point differences between Jeyne and Talisia, that (in the books) Jeyne, being from the Crag (Lannister loyalists), and her family might have been in on part/all of the plot that culminated in the Red Wedding? I remember reading some speculation that the Lannisters set the whole thing up by having Jeyne intentionally get knocked up by Robb, which they knew would piss Walder off and likely end the Stark/Frey alliance... That's what I remember anyhow.

The only hole in that theory is that they couldnt force Robb to marry Jeyne. However, they knew he was Ned's son, and would likely do the "right" thing.

Yes, that's in the books; I guess too much plot for TV, so they snuffed it all out.

Haha, the amount of rage regarding GoT online is massive, and somewhat hilarious. I read the first couple of books and came to the conclusion that Martin is probably the biggest troll in the history of literature, and stopped watching the show after the first season, just decided to read all the summaries of the books. It all seems completely pointless, although Tyrion is fantastic both in the books and in the show. The show is definitely a lot more compressed, so much is left out that it's more of a summary in itself.

Maybe I'll be proven wrong and the final book will be the payoff of all payoffs, but somehow I doubt it. It will probably be another pointless bunch of relative nonsense, written well by a skilled troll.

This.

If anybody thinks the RW is a watershed event, there's more coming. By the end of book 4 I felt completely dis-invested in the story or characters, and after book 5 I'm not even interested in waiting for the last two. IF GRRM never finishes his series (a distinct possibility, seeing the time he takes for each, and his age), nobody's gonna miss anything. Readers need to enjoy each book episodically.

As I see it, the killing off in GoT is like killing everybody in Harry Potter off by book 5 or 6 - all the good guys, all the bad guys, leaving maybe Neville Longbottom, the Patil twin-sisters and maybe Bill Weasley on one side, and only some minor characters like Peter Pettigrew, Fenrir Greyback and Rita Skeeter on the other side. Would not be much fun, right?

If you have really not read the books, then this is so funny. You couldn't have been further off the mark even if you tried. 2/14 !

Man. I always cringe when a pregnant girl gets stabbed like that. Sheesh!

Do things ever get better for the Starks?

Yes. Mega spoiler
Bran is going to be a greenseer, Arya is going to become a faceless...girl? Jon is going to be commander of the nights watch and an ally of sorts to Stannis, Sansa keeps on being Sansa, although her mother becomes a vengeance driven zombie hellbent on killing Freys and Lanisters.

People that this season enraged will want to watch next season for sure. Much happens that you will find very satisfying.
