Hmm I read ahead in the book, I enjoy skipping through and reading one characters story continuously the way through, then picking another, etc.

Robert died. Ned was killed. A war started. Renly was killed. Balon was killed. Robb was killed. More will follow.

I'm probably missing something, but I can only really think of 2 more "big" deaths off the top of my head.

edit: 3... forgot about the end of the most recent book, but I'm still in disbelief about that one.

The incident at the end of Dances isn't a confirmed death yet, just an attack and stabbing. And Milisandre is there as well, with a confirmed ability to raise the dead.

Books 4 and 5 weren't that good IMO. I'd almost recommend skipping them and waiting for Game of Thrones to cover them as whatever they come up for the show HAS to be more entertaining than what was in the books.

Part of the problem I had with book 4 is it really spends very little time with most characters, skipping from place to place so you get very little advancement of the plot as a whole. Book 5 spends most of it's time on boring parts of the Daenerys story line and people wandering about the countryside, it's worse than book 4.

Edit: Just look at the Amazon reviews for instance, he goes from 4.5 stars for the first three books to 3.5 stars for the last two. I guarantee you those scores are higher than they should be due to fanboys being generous and giving scores for the overall series and/or what they wanted the books to be, not what they were.

"better"? I suppose that depends on your point of view, things don't go great for the remaining starks, but things certainly aren't truly horrible for them going into book 6.

As for
Snow... well he has a good bit coming to him.

Well, as for that character...
in the prologue for that book. A character who can warg mentions that a Direwolf would be a animal fit for a king to warg into... that suggests a way for him to escape and might be a hint at a popular theory... that being said I don't think he makes it to the end... but if the clue in the prologue bears out he might make a difference with his last actions.

The incident at the end of Dances isn't a confirmed death yet, just an attack and stabbing. And Milisandre is there as well, with a confirmed ability to raise the dead.

There is a clue if you read the prologue of A Dance with Dragons that obviously refers to the victim of the stabbing... and there is the interview in which the author says this when questioned about the incident...
GEORGE R.R. MARTIN: Oh, you think he’s dead, do you?
so who knows...

Lord of the Rings had book two...

Which as I recall was quite a challenge to read compared to Fellowship of the Ring and Return of the King. I'm hopeful that he has gotten the more boring setup parts out of the way and can get to the exciting parts... there are hints of amazing things happening and the greater influence of supernatural powers in the future books.

That's what you get for naming the baby Eddard. Dumbasses.

Ouch that is disappointing to hear. I hope the creators of the TV version can carry the story better. Looks like they did already with Red Wedding.

this isn't too spoilery since I'm not saying what happens but books 4 and 5 pretty much take place at more or less the same time but book 4 A Feast for Crows focuses mainly on Kings landing and Dorne characters with viewpoints from a couple of people in the continent Dany is on.

Book 5 A Dance with Dragons covers the mostly Wall and other characters on the other continent.

The popular guess is that the writers will show what happens in the books in pretty much chronological order... meaning covering books 4 and 5 could take four seasons total... even if they go more than 10 episodes for the upcoming seasons...

Which they easily could do considering all the material in books 4 and 5

I thought it was a perfect little touch that it was just some random Frey soldier who ended Catelyn. Absolutely perfectly done.

You know they need to stretch it out as much as possible while we wait for the remaining books.

While I found book 4 to be dull, that was because it only included the PoV characters I didn't really care about. 5, I enjoyed, once I got about 1/3rd of the way through it anyway. Not every book can be filled with non-stock action, this is a deep, story driven series. Its not geared for the younger generation that lacks attention spans.

Melisandre has never raised anyone, only Thoros has.

True enough, but I was referring to her being a priestess of Rhollor as Thoros was. She was also aware that the Lord of Light has raised people from the dead in the past, she's demonstrated 'magic' abilities on at least two occasions(the poison wine and the shadow demon), and has demonstrated divination from fire. Its not much of a leap to say she could raise the dead as well.
