I definitely think the TV show will have/has had an effect on how he wants to write the story. How much we'll never know.

Absolutely, the fact that the show has killed certain characters that are still alive in the book limits GRRM's ability to make these characters key to the unwritten plots.

I know why GRRM did it and on some level I even appreciate the contrast to the 'main characters rarely die' mainstream. Does mean I don't hate the fat fucker though...

I think GRRM has told HBO writers how he plans to end the story in case he dies

so if true, HBO writers are not going to kill off any characters that are truly critical to how it ends

HBO has an interactive map which also includes the continent of Essos (which is mostly empty, but it's where all of Daenerys' story has taken place so far). Speaking of which, how in hell did Qarth get so rich when they're completely removed from literally everything? Gee, better start a city at the edge of this desert with absolutely no natural resources so we can force trade to go through us despite the fact that it would be more convenient for literally everyone on Earth for trade not to detour through the ass end of the world... They must have one hell of a marketing department.

There is more land to the east (area mentioned often in the series, Asshai, where Melisandre is from and a few other places). They are a gateway between these areas.

Here is a small pick of the overall world. Very few maps have the far east past Quarth, but you can see that Quarth is at the bottom of the Red Sea(the red desert looking thing right of center). Asshai is at the bottom right on the bottom tip of the peninsula on the right.
