It happens "off screen," so to speak, in the books. Characters hear about it, but no POV character sees it.

Up to that point of the book I think I was still in a bit of denial about the RW. After hearing that described... not so much.

Props to them for incorporating it into the series, though I will dread actually seeing it (same as I did with the RW itself).

Reading the books gives you a completely different, and better, sense of things. The age of the characters for example. Dany is a 14 year old girl, Arya is 8, Jon and Rob are 15, Rickon is almost 4. Maybe by this season we can add a year. When I look at the show I think how stupid Rob is but in the context of a 15 year old it makes a lot more sense. I think the actress playing Arya is doing a great job but she's 16 and twice as old as her character. The actor playing Rob is 26. Catelyn is 46. Somehow Catelyn is 46 with a 3 year old but in the books I could have sworn she made a comment about how she was still young enough to have more children.

Book 4 is a tough read. He wrote a giant book and then realized it was too big and needed to be split. Rather than split it chronologically he split it by geography. This means you have to read an entire book without some of your favorite characters. For most I think book 4 doesn't include many of their favorites while 5 includes most of them. If you can piece meal the chapters from 4 and 5 together chronologically it would probably be a much better read. You can then be an over achiever and get the chapters from book 6 from the internet that have already been released.

You can have children into your 50s if you want. I know a 46 y/o with a young child and she could probably have another if she wanted. In context to the book, Ned was in his mid 30s so I assume that Catelyn was around that age. She probably had Rob right at 17 or 18.

That's rare. Look at the statistics; female fertility starts to plummet before they are middle aged. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_and_female_fertility

wtf?
only 10% chance to be preggers at age 30?!

That's not what's being shown in that curve.

It says nothing about percent chance of becoming preggers. It appears to be showing the remaining population of eggs (relative to what a chick starts out with) as they're dying off or being delightfully expelled or whatever.

The curve describes the percentage of ovarian reserve remaining at ages from birth to 55 years, based on the ADC model. 100% is taken to be the maximum ovarian reserve, occurring at 18–22 weeks post-conception. The percentages apply to all women whose ovarian reserve declines in line with a particular model where late and early menopause are associated with high and low peak NGF populations, respectively. It is estimated that for 95% of women by the age of 30 years only 12% of their maximum pre-birth NGF population is present and by the age of 40 years only 3% remains. At birth, women have all their follicles for folliculogenesis, and they steadily decline until menopause.

Edit: Internal chick parts are complicated and gross. I prefer what's on the outside. The outside parts are all that matter.

It's still nice to see that on the screen.

If they put that on the screen then they better include the epilogue to book 3 (and the character introduced in that chapter) in the next season because that's when the action depicted in that pic was mentioned and is very much part of a character's motivations going forward in the books.

Seems the producers are keeping quiet about zombie Cat. Winter is Coming site doesn't have a curtain call for Michelle Fairley yet.

HBO has an interactive map which also includes the continent of Essos (which is mostly empty, but it's where all of Daenerys' story has taken place so far). Speaking of which, how in hell did Qarth get so rich when they're completely removed from literally everything? Gee, better start a city at the edge of this desert with absolutely no natural resources so we can force trade to go through us despite the fact that it would be more convenient for literally everyone on Earth for trade not to detour through the ass end of the world... They must have one hell of a marketing department.

except Essos is not mostly empty, its a larger continent with a shitton more people living on it than Westeros

and port cities don't need to have natural resources based on land, because their strength comes from the sea. Fish and trade are plenty for sustenance and prosperity, and considering Qarth is positioned in a spot analogous to history's Constantinople, it effectively controls the flow of trade and thus is exceptionally wealthy

Basically, Qarth isn't at the ass end of the world, its actually pretty much in the middle of it, its just at the ass end of the map that is mostly relevant to the current story

It's still nice to see that on the screen.

I dunno, in the book it was more of a rumor that created intrigue/mystery as to what really happened, to see it fleshed out can take away from it IMO, and at this point I almost think they're just going for shock value that just isn't needed
that is unless GRRM intended to create a Wolfotaur or something

Not meant to be a birth control discussion. Clearly the age of the character is vastly different than the age of the actress.

Those eggs don't last forever.

We should take this to another thread, but plenty of women 30+ get pregnant. While it's ideal to do it while younger, a women goes through a monthly cycle well into their late 50's or early 60's. Unlike men who need millions of sperm to pregnant an egg, a women just needs to release a single one. Therefore, a large inventory is not needed.

For example, the age of mothers is pretty even 20-34 as of 2011. The age groups surround those are also pretty equal. It is becoming more common these days for women to wait into their 30's or 40's to have kids as more go directly to work out of college and move away from the traditional thought of meeting a husband and staying home to raise kids.
