Wrong:

The Elite is coming in black for a limited time and will then be mass produced on a regular basis in the normal white color. It may not be for months to come but it's going to be the normal white color by this holiday season.

From your own link:

This dark drive it is a special edition model only given to the development team who worked on the product

Neither link says anything about a retail release of the black HD-DVD add-on.

Did you read the sites you linked? They were a special gift for development teams.

I'm not sure, but I haven't heard any announcements by MS about releasing a black HD DVD drive. Only about the normal accessories. Hell, I'm not even arguing that this plays a factor in the HD war at all.

DVD FTW!

I don't need either new technology, I think regular old DVDs look great on my HDTV.

You honestly believe that MS just manufactured a small batch of black drives just for the team?

"Unlike some other Microsoft-internal goodies, we are permitted to sell these, so if you want one you might be lucky and a co-worker could put one on eBay."

MS ultimately will produce these in black. The elite hasn't even been released yet. MS has never said that HD-DVD drives will NOT be produced.

Edit: They have also not announced a remote in black. Does that mean they aren't going to release one? So you're going to be forced to use the controller as your remote? Don't think so.

Who cares? Do DVDs look that bad? I play DVDs on my 51" HDTV, and think they look great! Yes, I know HDDVD/Bluray have a higher resolution, but is the difference worth all the fuss and money?

I'm not educated enough to make a guess on if they'd release it. I don't have the sales numbers for the HD DVD drives, so I don't know what percentage of people that own a 360 also own the HD DVD drive. My guess would be that it's relatively small.

On top of that, what I've heard is the black is LE. If this is true, and sales reflect low demand for the HD DVD drive, it may not be a good idea to produce black HD DVD drives.

Yes, they do stuff like that all the time. You've never seen the transparent and green Xbox 1s people at MS were given? Let me know when the black HD-DVD player is on sale retail before you go waving victory flags.

Is yours a Hitachi rear projection CRT? I only ask because 51" seems to be a unique size. And that's what I have.

I agree with you 100%. As someone on ATOT posted in another BR vs HDDVD thread, both technologies are the answer to a question no one asked.

No, but close. Sony 51" rear projection CRT. I'll get HD/BR when they're <$200. Until then, I'm not sweating DVDs.

MS told IGN that the black will not be LE. They are going to have their own SKU. Who knows. MS also said that the elite wasn't real for months. So that's why you can't say "no black HD-DVD drive". They also haven't announced a remote or wifi black components. Long term I don't believe they will sell an all black system and then a white remote and white wifi..lol. That'd be dumb.

Low demand for HD-DVD right now is the lack of titles. Since the start of the year the HD-DVD market hasn't many releases. Starting this summer there are over 40-50 new titles coming out. I think that'll help bump the market up in sales overall. It's hard to tell long term at this point.

Sony IS a studio...so they can push out their content at a very fast pace. They can saturate the market to a certain extent quickly.

That was a Limited Edition run of a console. MS is now saying that the 360 sku will go black and NOT be a limited run.

"The Elite is not a limited edition. It's permanent. And we will not replace any sku," Penello explained when referring to the flurry of rumors preceeding the official announcement. "We now have three SKUs and we predict the primary seller will continue to be the Pro system."

Let me know when you have proof the black HD-DVD drive will never be made. I showed you a link where they already made a batch. Personally, I don't believe they would make a batch of black drives to give to the HD team as just a gift. It was a test/beta batch run of what will ultimately become the final product.

I was claiming the same thing up until I just bought my first HDTV this week. IMO there is absolutely a need for a high def optical format. The thing is, HD in general is not ready for prime time,so it it takes a few years for the format wars to work out, it's no loss to anyone but enthusiasts and early adopters.

I didn't realize how truly awful the HD experience is until I jumped on board. It's not that HD does not look great, it's that it looks great like 10% of the time (right format, right resolution).

I have no idea what you are talking about with that line. I have never seen HD that doesn't look amazing.

Not all HD content looks great, especially broadcast.

I think he means watching an HDTV with a non-HD source. I admit, my HDTV looks pretty bad on non-HD channels.

Guess you didn't watch the NCAA tournament.

However, I think DVDs look really good. The gap between SD and "good" HDTV is a lot wider than it is between DVD and HD-DVD / BR, IMO.

There's that, but that's a given. I was really talking about broadcast content. Where I am TWC compresses the crap out of the digital content. There's a lot of artifacts etc which detract from the overall experience.
