Pretty much. Sony figured out a way to get Blu-Ray into the hands of people who aren't normally early adopters, and those people are buying movies.

It's trendy to hate Sony these days. Even when it's not Sony your hating.

This sentence doesn't make sense.

I think the Blu-Ray hate is definitely related to Sony hate, but it's not like people just picked Sony at random to hate... Sony has earned it.

There's a good chance that Blu-Ray will lose Sony the console war but will win them the high-def optical format war.

With that said, I still think that this war will be won by whoever can get their player into Walmart for less than $200.

Granted, these numbers are as of March 18, so they don't include the full counts for Casino Royale for blu ray, Kingdom of Men for HD DVD and Happy Feet which is on both...

And what's sad is Batman Begins is from Warner Bros., who also publishes Blu-ray, which means the movie will be available for Blu-ray soon. I recall seeing Blu-ray case of it somewhere last year from Warner.

Funny, because back in November it was the exact opposite situation. The PS3 really seems to have turned things around.

That's because there was a severe drought of new releases for HD DVD through January to March. There were some weeks where there were no new releases and other weeks where there was maybe 1. Blu-Ray was releasing 4 or more titles every week in that time.

70+ new HD DVD titles have been announced for release by July. We'll see what happens with HD DVD and Blu-Ray having a roughly equal amount of new releases week-in and week-out.

many of the good titles will be on both blu ray and HD DVD...what blockbuster exclusives are coming out for HD DVD? Good Sheppard, Smokin Aces and 40 Year Old Virgin are the only one that comes to mind right now...

With Pirates I/II and Cars coming out in May/June, HD DVD (even the Matrix boxset) will not even come close to generating the number of blu ray sales...

And what about the pure hardware aspect? There's over 1.3m PS3s in the US alone, along with all the stand-alone players. I don't believe the # of HD-DVD drives has surpassed 300k yet. For them to think about pulling even, sales of both the players and discs are going to have to increase drastically.

I'm not denying the hardware advantage that the PS3 gives Blu-Ray. Just pointing out that there was a drought of new releases for HD DVD between January and March. That is the primary reason why Blu-Ray is leading in disc sales through the first part of this year.

The film "300" is going to be a huge push for next-gen optical. Warner is doing it, so HD-DVD is a gimmie. The question is, will it be exclusive?

Once the mainstream consumers realize the exclusive studio support blu ray has (Disney is going to be a huge huge factor here in getting buy in from the signifant other), I would be willing to be bet that is another dagger for HD DVD...

Neither Blu-Ray or HD DVD will be hitting mainstream until their players get under $200.

I'd say that both HD/DVD and Bluray are full of fail.

DVD is great, I don't need DRM infected media.

We'll see. HD DVD is looking like it is going to hit the sub-$200 barrier first. Prior to the PS3, HD DVD stand-alone players were outselling Blu-Ray stand-alone players. The PS3 won't be dropping in price any year soon so that won't be helping much once HD DVD gets under $200.

I've no horse in this race. Would rather see manufacturers concentrate on getting out dual-format players so consumers don't have to worry about this crap.

And just what do you think region coding and "unskippable" tracks are?

Damn, good freakin point.

But I'm not going to spend that much cash to have MORE DRM.

Unskippable tracks aren't DRM, they're forced advertising. But the regions thing, wtf is up with that.
