It appears Sam's has discontinued the 360 HD-DVD player and overall sales of Bluray are pounding HD-DVD on movies and stand-alone units. I am so glad I was not one of the fools to buy one for 500+ bucks.

What makes you think that Sam's has discontinued the 360 HD DVD player?

I heard that there was a price drop at Sam's for the HD DVD player but not that it was discontinued.

Saw the same post. Inconclusive on whether or not Sam's has discontinued it.

Not even close.

Sony has been fortunate to have a very high demand title to distribute on BluRay, namely Casino Royale which was produced by their film division. As other studios release high demand titles later this year things will become a little clearer.

Which platform will The Princess Bride most likely be released on first? AFAIK, it's an MGM/UA title.

Probably Blu-Ray then. I think MGM/UA is owned by Sony now.

That's also why the Bond films in HD (when they come out) will be Blu-Ray only. Sony owns them now.

MGM/UA has a convoluted distribution structure right now. Presently I think Fox has the deal to distribute MGM's remaining library even though Sony and their investors own the company. I think Ted Turner has the rights to the mid-80s and back MGM stuff.

AFAIK, Fox is only using Blu Ray at this time.

Odds of either one sticking around for more than 5 or 10 years is slim...and we're already a year or two in.

Or, we'll have affordable dual players which will make the formats a non-issue.

The film was originally a 20th Century Fox production... but if ol' Ted has the rights, maybe it will show up on TNTHD and I can make a nice little home for it on my DVR

Dual players = cheaper format wins = HD-DVD?

HDDVD/Blu-ray - see you in ten years if you are still around.

Yep, the clear winner so far is DVD.

I guess if Blu-Ray does turn out to be the clear winner, MS will go ahead and put out a Blu-Ray attachment.

Yeah, there's supposed to be something like 70 HD DVD titles released between now and summer. There was a drought at the start of the year which really hurt HD DVD sales compared to Blu-Ray sales. Toshiba has also dropped the price of HD DVD players in response to a price drop from Blu-Ray manufacturers.

The video rights were sold to MGM/UA even though Fox has the theatrical rights. This is common depending on who they can get the best deal out of. Peter Jackson is suing New Line for this very reason (the used their in house home video unit instead of bidding it out, possibly losing out on money).

I think Princess Bride makes it under the wire into MGM/UA library ownership.

The fact that Microsoft is not making a black HD-DVD drive to match the Elite when they are doing every other accessory says something.

The fact that you didn't know the Elite was going to be the black color in limited quantities only says something.

They're still making all the other accessories in black, aren't they?

Everyone knows that Sony cannot make a lasting format. BluRay will fail like all other Sony proprietary formats.
