I have my 7 year old son and he loves playing video games with me. We also do a lot of outdoor stuff.
He loves roblox; which is kinda like legos online but free. He's got two older sisters that will play with him. He's also enjoyed Diablo 3.....*its so watered down; won't let him play the others until he's a little older* Starcraft 2; lego games - garry's mod; team fortress 2. He's also enjoyed helping me play LFD2 along with other zombie games.
He's also had a blast playing defense grid *great game* Orcs must die; *decent defense tower/puzzle game* and its cartoonish violence. torchlight 2; naval warfare...*really fun steampunk naval game* Another one he's really loving as I do is Kingdom Rush on steam. Great game; cartoonish violence tower defense game with lots of replayablity.
As other's have suggested; emulation of early NIN games; is also a great way to go. Someone saying Baldor's Gate was too mature; its as mature as you make it. Also another one is neverwinter nights; you can tone that down also.
Really depends on what you feel he can handle. I know my son can handle this stuff; there are at times he gets scared; I just have to remind him its make believe; and then we go do something else. I also have time limits set up on the pc; *network admin here as my job*
He looks things up for games and to do his homework.
