Gamebox Games!! Updated!!

Ok, this is a two part post. The first question I have is, What games do you guys want on this server?

I currently have the following on the list.

Unreal Tournament (two installed)
Unreal Tournament Demo
Quake 3 Demo
Quake 2 Full
Quake 1 Full
Half Life (maybe two installed)

I'm also looking at other games, but I want to know what you guys want.

The other thing I need is some help with the games. I don't own very many of these games myself. If I see them at one of the sources I have for 10 or 15 bucks, I will buy it. But I don't often see the latest and greatest games there. So, if any of you have a spare copy of the game you want to see on the server, please tell me. I don't know if we need to keep it with the server, but having a list of people that own spares so that if ever asked, I can say we have all of the games legally.

Quake3 full would be great. Of course, I'm not gonna give up my copy so that it could be on the server.

Descent2 Demo 1 Not the most popular, but at least it won't consume too much power unless it's actually being used, since there are no bots. Now if I can just get more people to play it with me...

Tribes! It's dirt cheap(EB quotes it at $20, but it can usually be found cheaper), and a great team game. If you can't do that, install the demo, it has Raindance, so we'd still be set.

PS Mech, don't you mean Descent 3?

D3 is downloaded and being setup, it's still not easy to get all of this running, so be patient.

Sorry, I'm not a Quake fan, but I would play any version of Descent if available, as well as Halflife. Let me know if you need anything, I'd be happy to help out!

I think that tribes would be great too... They need to bring out a Linux dedicated server for it

Actualy, I supose it would be possible to run a tribes server on an old Pentium 166 or something (we all know that Lord Demios has a huge stockpile of older computers under his bed for unexpected server work ), and have the main Linux powered game server forward any packets that it receives on the standard tribes port to the tribes server, and then have the tribes server use the game server as a gateway so that it can send packets back to the clients on the internet. It is an idea anyway

Let's put it this way CC, something will be done to get a tribes server setup. It might not happen right now, but it's being looked at very carefully!

(/me ponders the idea of throwing a second physical board into the game server, add a nic, and I would be set. .. Just a thought. Hey Brad, could we get gamebox to have 2 nicks, one to the world, one to a second machine, and have gamebox do the routeing? (only reason I ask is because it's late, and I think it's possible. Would be a lot of work to the case though.....)

I might not be Brad (actualy, I know for sure that I am not ), but I think that I can say with some certinity that is possible... I hear that it can sometimes be a pain to get both NICs going and assigned where you want them, but once that is done, I think that you would have to setup IP Masqurading and IP Forwarding (or something like that ) and then probably set things up with ipchains, or what ever the current firewalling tool is for the kernel that you are using.

Yes, the network side of it will work Chris. Your scaring me when you mention putting another MB in the case, but it's possible.... Why do I have the feeling an evening or two of mine are about to be consumed?

That's right, people, D3 is on the way for Gamebox, and if you want to try it out, Onvia seems to have it for about $16 shipped (no pun intended there). If you have Demo you can play against other players on two maps, but if you have Full there are other possibilities, including playing against bots, flying the Descent3 missions in cooperative mode (this would be fun, working together), MonsterBall (like soccer!), and even *gasp!* single-player! I suggest downloading the demo and seeing if you can take the "which-way-is-up-again?" nature of D3. It also needs a fair amount of computer horsepower, although certain people have run it on Cyrixes with 64Mb of RAM... and THEY KNOW WHO THEY ARE...

Anyway, I will put up a D3 Demo server at the drop of a hat if you catch me in the IRC channel and want to try it out. ftp://ftp1.interplay.com/pub/demos/d3dmo111.exe is Demo1, which is slightly smaller than Demo2 and has a better Anarchy (deathmatch) map design, IMHO.

Redneck, Half Life and the CS mod were the first thing I added to the gamebox. It will be operational when the gamebox goes live.
